India and New Zealand have played have played 16 series so far and the ensuing series would be the 17th one between the two. Of the 16 series, India has won eight series, New Zealand has won four series and four series have been drawn.

India and New Zealand have played 47 tests so far. India has won 15 tests, New Zealand has won nine tests and 23 tests were drawn

India has posted a total of 500 plus runs on seven occasions against New Zealand. Its 583 for 7 declared at Ahmedabad in Oct 1999 represents the highest team total. New Zealand has posted a total of 500 plus runs on three occasions against India. 630 for 6 declared at Mohali in Oct 2003 not only represents not only its highest team total against India, but also the highest total posted by a team in India-New Zealand test series.

India has been dismissed for a total less than 100 runs in a completed innings on five occasions against New Zealand. New Zealand has been dismissed for less than 100 runs on only one occasion against India. 81 all out at Hamilton in Feb 1976 is India’s lowest total in a completed innings, while 94 all out at Hamilton in Dec 2002 is New Zealand’s lowest total in a completed innings. India’s 81 at Hamilton in Feb 1976 is also the lowest total in India-New Zealand test series.

India has won two test by an innings margin, eight test by wickets margin and five tests by runs margin. New Zealand has won one test by innings margin, five test by wickets margin and three test by runs margin

As many as twelve Indian batsmen have an aggregate of 500 plus runs against New Zealand while nine New Zealand batsmen have an aggregate of 500 plus runs against India. SR Tendulkar {1406} and R Dravid {1318} are the only two batsmen to have totalled 1000 plus runs.

Forty centuries have been scored by Indian batsmen of which six are double hundreds. MH Mankad’s 231 at Chennai in Jan 1956 is the highest individual score by an Indian batsman.

New Zealand batsmen have scored 33 hundreds of which three are hundreds. GT Dowling’s 239 at Christchurch in Feb 1968 is the highest individual score by a New Zealand batsman against India. The three double hundreds are – 239 by GT Dowling at Christchuch in Feb 1968 : 230* by B Sutcliffe at Delhi in Dec 1955 and 201 by JD Ryder at Napier in Mar 2009.

GT Dowling’s 239 at Christchurch in Feb 1968 is also the highest individual score by a batsman in India-New Zealand test series.

The series has witnessed 15 occasions of captains scoring hundreds – eight by Indian captains and seven by New Zealand captains. SR Tendulkar’s 217 at Ahmedabad in Oct 1999 is the highest score by an Indian captain against New Zealand. GT Dowling’s 239 at Christchurch in Feb 1968 is the highest score by a New Zealand captain against India.

No wicket keeper batsman has scored a hundred against New Zealand. FM Engineer’s 90 at Chennai in 1965 is the highest individual score by an Indian wicket keeper batsman against New Zealand. New Zealand wicket keeper batsmen have scored two hundreds against India. 173 by IDS Smith at Auckland in Feb 1990 and 115 by BB McCullum at Napier in Mar 2000. IDS Smith’s 173 is the highest individual score by a New Zealand wicket keeper batsman against India.

Seven Indian batsmen have scored individual nineties against New Zealand. RF Surti is the only batsman to be dismissed on 99 in the series. Five New Zealand batsmen have scored individual nineties against India.

There are 67 occasions of Indian batsmen scoring zeroes against New Zealand and 81 occasions of New Zealand batsmen scoring zeroes against India.

ML Jaisimha at Hyd-LBS in Oct 1969, BS Chandrashekhar at Wellington in Feb 1976, RGM Patel at Mumbai in Nov 1985, VVS Laxman at Wellington in Dec 2002 and Zaheer Khan at Hamilton in Dec 2002 are the five Indian batsmen who have bagged pairs.

AR MacGibbon at Chennai in Jan 1956, GB Troup at Wellington in Feb 1981, CM Kuggeleijn at Bangalore in Nov 1988, MC Snedden at Hyd-LBS in Dec 1988, PJ Wiseman at Wellington in Dec 1988 and PJ Wiseman at Kanpur in Oct 1999 are the five New Zealand batsmen to bag a pair on six occasions.

PJ Wiseman of New Zealand has bagged the pair on two occasions – at Wellington in Dec 1988 and at Kanpur in Oct 1999.

There are twelve occasions of Indian batsman scoring fifties in both innings of a test match Of these twelve occasions, there is only one occasion of batsman scoring hundreds in both innings of the test {R Dravid – 190 and 103* at Hamilton in Jan 1999}. There are four occasions of batsman scoring hundred and fifty in a test – 68 and 103* by GR Viswanath at Kanpur in Nov 1976, 125 and 53 by SC Ganguly at Ahmedabad in Oct 1999, 222 and 73 by R Dravid at Ahmedabad in Oct 2003, 104* and 67* by VVS Laxman at Mohali in Oct 2003 and 76 and 124* by VVS Laxman at Napier in Mar 2009.

GR Viswanath {83 and 79 at Christchuch in Feb 1976 and 68 and 103* at Kanpur in Nov 1976} and VVS Laxman {104* and 67* at Mohali in Oct 2003 and 76 and 124* at Napier in Mar 2009] are the two batsmen who have scored fifties in both innings of the test match on two occasions

R Dravid {190 and 103* at Hamilton in Jan 1999, 222 and 73 at Ahmedabad in Oct 2003 and 83 and 62 at Napier in Mar 2009} is the only batsman to have performed the feat of scoring fifties in both innings of a test match on three occasions.

There are six occasions of New Zealand batsmen scoring fifties in both innings of the test match. NJ Astle is the only New Zealand batsman to score hundred and fifty {103 and 51* at Ahmedabad in Oct 2003}. CD McMillan {92 and 84 at Hamiliton in Jan 1999 and 54 and 83* at Ahmedabad in Oct 2003} has s
cored fifties in both innings of the test match on two occasions.

The series has witnessed batsmen scoring zero and fifty in a test match on 17 occasions – eight by Indian batsmen and none by New Zealand batsmen. K Srikkanth {94 and zero at Mumbai in Nov 1988} and WV Raman {Zero and 96 at Christchurch in Feb 1990} are the two Indian batsman who have scored zero and ninety in a test match. JW Guy {91 and zero at Kolkata in Dec 1955} is the only New Zealand batsman to score zero and ninety in a test. Two New Zealand batsmen have earned the distinction of scoring sero and hundred in a test match – BR Taylor {105 and zero not out at Kolkata in Mar 1965} and GT Dowling {129 and zero at Mum-BS in Mar 1965}. BR Taylor performed the feat on his test debut.

There are 20 occasions of Indian batsmen dismissed run out and 19 occasions of New Zealand batsmen dismissed run out. JM Parker of New Zealand is the only batsman to be dismissed after scoring a hundred {104 at Mumbai in Nov 1976}, while DJ Nash {63 at Hamilton in Jan 1999} and JEC Franklin {52 at Napier in Mar 2009} were dismissed after scoring a half century

Seven Indian batsmen and thirteen New Zealand batsmen have been dismissed stumped in the series. GT Dowling {239 at Christchuch in Feb 1968} and NJ Astle {103 at Ahmedabad in Oct 2003} are the batsmen who have been dismissed stumped after scoring hundreds, while BE Congdon {58 at Christchurch in Feb 1976} and GM Turner {64 at Wellington in Feb 1976} are the batsmen to be dismissed stumped after scoring half centuries.

The series has witnessed 22 occasions of New Zealand bowlers capturing five or more wickets in an innings, RJ Hadlee’s 7 for 23 is the best innings bowling figures by a New Zealand bowler,

S Venkataraghavan {12 for 152}, EAS Prasanna {11 for 140} and A Kumble {10 for 134} are the three bowlers who have captured ten or more wickets in a match against New Zealand. S Venkataraghavan’s 12 for 152 is the best match bowling effort by an Indian bowler.

RJ Hadlee has captured 11 for 58 at Wellington in Feb 1976 and 10 for 88 at Mumbai in Nov 1988. His efforts are the only two efforts of a New Zealand bowler capturing ten or more wickets in match against India. There are 25 occasions of Indian bowlers conceding 100 plus runs in an innings against New Zealand. A Kumble’s 3 for 181 is the most expensive bowling by an Indian bowler in terms of runs conceded. He is the only Indian bowler to concede 150 plus runs in an innings.

SP Gupte {7 for 128 at Hyd-LBS in Nov 1955}, BS Bedi {6 for 127 at Christchurch in Feb 1968}, S Madanlal {5 for 134 at Christchurch in Feb 1976} and RJ Shastri {5 for 125 at Auckland in Mar 1981} are the four Indian bowlers who have captured five or more wickets conceding 100 plus runs.

N Kapil Dev {none for 101 at Auckland in Feb 1990}, MM Patel {none for 128 at Napier in Mar 2009} and RG Nadkarni {none for 132 at Delhi in Dec 1955} are the three Indian bowlers who have conceded 100 runs in an innings without capturing a wicket

There are 23 occasions of New Zealand bowlers conceding 100 plus runs in an innings. DL Vettori {6 for 127 at Kanpur in Oct 1999} and DK Morrison {5 for 145 at Auckland in Feb 1990} are the two New Zealand bowlers to capture five or more wickets conceding 100 plus runs. DL Vettori has conceded 150 plus runs on two occasions – 4 for 200 at Ahmedabad in Oct 1999 and 2 for 171 at Mohali in Oct 1999. These are the only two occasions of a New Zealand bowler conceding 150 plus runs in an innings against India

DL Vettori’s 4 for 200 at Ahmedabad in Oct 1999 represent the most expensive bowling by a New Zealand bowler against India in terms of runs conceded.

It is interesting to note that there are no occasions of a New Zealand bowler conceding 100 plus runs without capturing a wicket.

There are 49 occasions of Indian batsmen posting a three figure partnership against New Zealand.
