Centuries in both innings of a test – SD Hope of West Indies joins the list

SD Hope  of West Indies scored 147 and 118 not out in  the just concluded test against England at Leeds to  provide the 82nd occasion of a batsman scoring centuries  in each innings of a test. All such occasions are listed below. It also provides the first such instance in a test at Leeds.

SD Hope became the second West Indian bastman to score twin centuries in a test against  England and his feat provides the third such occasion. The last occasion when a West Indian batsman performed the feat of scoring centuries in both innings of a test  against England was GA Headley in Jun 1939. He had scored 106 and 107 at Lord’s. Thus it took 78 years for another West Indian batsman to score twin centuries  in a test against England

The following table list the seven batsmen who have scored a double century and a century in a test. There are seven such occasions which includes two occasions of a batsman scoring a treble century and a century in a test – GA Gooch and  KS Sangakkara. The list includes the Indian legend SM Gavaskar who had scored 124 and 220 against West Indies at Port of Spain in Apr 1971. It is interesting to note that SM Gavaskar is the only batsman in the annals of test cricket to score a century in the first innings and a double century in the second innings of a test.
