AR Patel of India captured five for 60 in England’s second innings in the just concluded second test between India and England at Chennai to provide the eleventh occasion of a spin bowler capturing five plus wickets on test debut against England. It also provides the fourth occasion of a left hand spin bowler capturing five plus wickets on test debut. All such occasions are tabulated below.

The immediate previous occasion of a left arm spin bowler capturing five plus wickets on test debut against England is credited AL Valentine who had figures of 8 for 104 at Manchester in Jun 1950. Thus after a gap of 70 years and eight months a left arm spinner emulated AL Valentine to capture five plus wickets on test debut against England. It is interesting to note that AL Valentine and AR Patel are the two left arm spinners to capture five plus wickets on test debut after 19th century. AL Valentine performing the feat in 19th century and AR Patel in the 20th century

AR Patel emulates M Nissar after a gap of 88 years and 08 months to capture five plus wickets on test debut against England.

AR Patel captured five for 60 in England’s second innings to provide the 167th occasion of a bowler capturing five or more wickets on test debut. He became the second Indian bowler to capture five plus wickets on test debut against England after M Nissar. M Nissar had captured five for 93 against England at Lord’s in Jun 1932. This test was incidentally India’s first ever test match. Thus AR Patel emulated M Nissar in capturing five plus wickets on test debut against England after a gap of 88 years and 08 months.
