ICC World T20 – Descriptive Statistics of the earlier five editions
The sixth edition of the ICC World T20 Championship is all set to start from 08.03.2016 in India. Here are some of the key stats of the five editions played earlier
There is no consistency of a team winning the Championship with the game itself being unpredictable. The results were also unpredictable as the five editions are won by different teams. The first edition was won by India, second by Pakistan, third by England, fourth by West Indies and ehe fifth by Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is going to defend the sixth championship to be played in India. Sri Lanka has played most games in the tournament – 31 and is followed by Pakistan which has played 30 games. These are the only two teams which have played 30 plus games in the tournament
Sri Lanka owns the record for most wins in the tournament. It has won 21 games and is the only team to win 20 plus games. Bangladesh with fifteen losses holds the record for most losses by a team in the tournament. Bangladesh is closely followed by England which has lost 14 game
The tournament has witnessed seven occasions of a team posting 200 plus runs in the tournament. Sri Lanka’s 260 for 6 against Kenya at Jo’burg on 14.09.07 is the highest team total by a team in the tournament. It also represents the only occasion of a team posting 250 plus runs in the tournament.
There are twenty occasions of a team dismissed all out for a total less than 100 runs in the tournament. Netherland’s 39 all out against Sri Lanka at Chittagong on 24.03.14 is the lowest total by a team in a completed innings
DPMD Jayawardene’s 1016 runs in the tournament represent the most run aggregate by a batsman in the tournament. He is the only batsman to score 1000 runs in the tournament.
DPMD Jayawardene also holds the record for most boundary fours scored by a batsman in the tournament. He has scored 111 boundary fours. He is the only batsman to score 100 plus boundary fours in the tournament
CH Gayle with 807 runs to his credit occupies the second place in the list of batsmen who have scored most runs in the tournament. TM Dilshan is the other batsman to score 700 plus runs {764},
DPMD Jayawardene {1016}, CH Gayle {807} and TM Dilshan {764} are the only three batsmen to total 700 plus runs in the tournament
CH Gayle with 49 boundary sixes to his credit owns the record for most boundary sixes scored by a batsman in the tournament. He needs one more boundary six to become the first batsman to score 50 boundary sixes in the tournament.
The tournament has witnessed six centuries the details of which are furnished below in the chronological order. BB McCulllum’s 123 in the game between New Zealand and Bangladesh at Pallekele on 21.09.12 is the highest individual score registered by a batsman the tournament.

There are six occasions of batsman scoring nineties in the tournament. The six batsmen list is furnished below. LJ Wright of England is the only batsman to score 99 in the tournament. He was not out on 99 against Afghanistan at Col-RPS on 21.09.12

CH Gayle of West Indies owns the record for most fifties in the tournament with eight fifties {01 C + 07 HC}. He is closely followed by DPMD Jayawardene of Sri Lanka who has scored seven fifties {01C + 06 C}. RG Sharma and V Kohli of India have six fifties {all half centuries}
CH Gayle also holds the record for most half centuries in the tournament. He has scored seven half centuries. DPMD Jayawardene. RG Sharma and V Kohli are the have scored six half centuries in the tournament.
The ‘maverick’ batsman Shahid Afridi of Pakistan and TM Dilshan of Sri Lanka share the record for most ducks in the tournament. Both the batsmen have been dismissed without scoring on five occasions. LJ Wright of England and ST Jayasuriya of Sri Lanka are the other two batsmen who have collected four ducks in the tournament. It is interesting to note that Shahid Afridi’s five ducks in the tournament are first ball dismissals.
As many as 84 occasions of a batsman collecting the first ball ducks are witnessed in the tournament. The tournament has witnessed eleven occasions of a batsman dismissed run out first ball and six occasions of batsmen dismissed for a duck without facing a delivery.
The tournament has witnessed 80 occasions of batsmen dismissed stumped in the tournament of which two batsmen were dismissed stumped after scoring a half century. There are eleven occasions of batsmen dismissed stumped without scoring. It is interesting to note that only one batsman was dismissed stumped off a wide ball in the tournament. {KA Pollard for a duck – dismissed stumped of the bowling of GP Swann – West Indies vs England at Providence on 03.05.10}
Eleven batsmen have been dismissed run out after scoring a fifty in the tournament, while eighteen batsmen have been dismissed run out without scoring.
DL Vettori and Shahid Afridi are the two captains to be dismissed run out without scoring in the tournament. CH Gayle remains the only captain to be dismissed run out after scoring a fifty. He was run out for 98 in the game between West Indies and India at Bridgetown on 09.05.10
There are nineteen occasions of a captain scoring fifties in the tournament and also thirteen occasions of a wicket keeper batsman scoring a ninety in the tournament. BB McCullum of New Zealand is the only wicket keeper batsman to score a hundred in the tournament. He scored 123 in the game between New Zealand and Bangladesh at Pallekele on 21.09.12.
Kamran Akmal of Pakistan and KC Sangakkara of Sri Lanka are the two wicket keepers to score fifties on three or more occasions. The following table lists out their performances.

Thus KC Sangakkara with his four fifties holds the record for most fifties by a wicket keeper batsman in the tournament.
The tournament has witnessed eleven occasions of a captain dismissed without scoring and ten occasions of a wicket keeper batsman dismissed for a duck.
There are 19 occasions of a captain scoring fifties and CH Gayle and KC Sangakkara share the record for most fifties by a captain in the tournament. Both have scored three fifties. The following table lists out their performances.

There are 167 occasion of batsmen scoring fifties in the tournament – six centuries and 161 half centuries. Indian batsmen have scored 24 fifties {01 C plus 23 HC}. Australia {21 – all HCs}. Pakistan {21 – 01 C plus 20 HC}, And Sri Lanka {21 – 01C plus 20 HC} are the other three teams to score 20 plus fifties in the tournament.
India also holds the record for most half centuries. Its batsmen have scored 23 half centuries in the tournament.

AD Hales and EJG Margan of England added 152 runs for the third wicket against Sri Lanka at Chittagong on 27 Mar 2014 to provide the second occasion of 150 plus runs partnership of the tournament.
