This game was abandoned without a ball being bowled to provide the second occasion of a match abandoned without a ball being bowled in the World Cup. The first such occasion was in 1979 World Cup. The game between Sri Lanka and West Indies was abandoned without a ball being bowled. This game was played on 13.06.79 and was rescheduled to be played next day, i.e., 14.06.79. Incessant rains caused the abandonment on 14.06.79 also

Afghanistan became the 20th team to make its debut in World Cup. Hamid Hasan had the honour of bowling the first delivery for Afghanistan in the World Cup. Shapoor Zardan had the honour of sharing the new ball with Hamid Hasan in the World Cup. Mohammad Nabi led Afghanistan in its first World Cup.


Mirwais Ashraf claimed the first wicket for Afghanistan in the World Cup when he had Tamim Iqbal caught by Afsar Zazai for 29. Afsar Zazai became the first Afghanistan wicket keeper to effect a dismissal in the World Cup.
