BCCI Inter Corporate Tournament : First Day Round up :
BCCI Inter Corporate Tournament took a wet start as all the four matches on the first day were affected by rain.
The match between Air India Blue and ITC at Mohali was abandoned without a ball being bowled.
In the match at Bangalore between Air India Red and BSNL, rain gods opened up in the Air India Red Innings and the play had to be abandoned.
At Dharmasala, the match was reduced to 36 overs a side, in which Tata Sports Club prevailed over AIPSSPB to win the game by 71 runs
MRF won the game by 12 runs under V Jayadevan method by winning their game against BPCL at Vizag
At Bangalore, Yuvraj Singh, the skipper of Air India Red, won the toss and inserted the opposition – BSNL. BSNL scored 258 for 7 in the allotted 50 overs, thanks to an enterprising knock of 82 by opening batsman – Arindam Das. He was concerned in two useful stands – 70 for the first wicket with BBCC Mohapatra and 90 for the second wicket with wicket keeper batsman Varun Kumar. Arindam Das was fluent in driving on both sides of the wicket as his essay contained nine boundaries in a stay of 139 minutes. He faced 107 deliveries.
Air India tasted its first success at 70, when BBCC Mohapatra fell for 41. His attempted pull of MG Mangela was taken in the deep square leg by A Chandila. Mohapatra’s 41 contained six boundary fours and one boundary six. He was at the crease for 53 minutes. He scored briskly and his 41 came in even deliveries – run a ball 41.
Yuvaraj Singh was clueless as the second wicket produced 90 runs between Arindam Das and Varun Kumar. He rang many bowling changes – brought in himself and also Suresh Raina – but to no avail. Both the batsmen were very fluent in their stroke play on both sides of the wicket. A run out separated the partnership between these two – Varun Kumar was run out for 49 – a good show by the young wicket keeper batsman. His essay contained 3 fours and a six and he was at the crease for 59 minutes and he faced 68 deliveries.
Arindam Das was the next man to depart as he failed to keep an uppish drive of Dhaval Kulakarni and was caught at mid on by Suresh Raina for an excellent and useful knock 82. He hit nine boundaries and occupied the crease for 139 minutes and faced 107 deliveries. Arindam Das who plays for Bengal in Ranji Trophy was seen at his best in this game. N Behera {29} and skipper Joginder Singh {27} made useful contributions which swelled their team’s total to 258 for 7.
For Air India Red, pace bowler SN Netravalkar and M Mangela picked up two wickets each conceding 22 and 40 runs respectively, while A Chandila’s ten over spell saw him leaking 60 runs with out a wicket making him the most expensive Air India Red bowler,
Joginder Singh playing his first ever BCCI tournament had the most satisfying moment as he had Air India Red opening batsman NV Ojha caught at the wicket of the very first delivery in Air India Red’s innings. Joginder Singh was playing his first List A match. Suresh Raina had a charmed innings of six not out as he was dropped twice – bowlers to suffer were Negi and Joginder Singh
Air India Red were 16 for one when the game was interrupted by rain and the game was called off officially at 9.02 PM as the rains did not relent. Both the teams shared two points each
At Mohali, overnight showers played truant and the match between Air India Blue and Indian Tobacco Company was abandoned without a ball being bowled. The match will be replayed on Friday, the scheduled rest day.
Rohan Gavaskar was the cynosure of the eyes with his 93 and his team Tata Sports Club coasted to a fluent 73 runs victory over All India Public Sector Sports Promotion Board (AIPSSPB) in Dharamsala.
The match was reduced to 36 overs a side due to rain interruption. Gavaskar came to the wicket after his team has lost two wickets for 10 runs. He added 63 runs for the third wicket in the company of NS Shetty {33}. He was concerned in a 35 runs stand for the fourth wicket with T Gharat and 30 runs stand for the 5th wicket with WA Mota and 67 runs stand with skipper AB Agarkar for the 6th wicket. AB Agarkar chipped in with 43.
Rohan Gavaskar hit seven four and three sixes in his essay of 93, while Agarkar scored a quickfire 43 in 34 balls with two fours and two sixes. Tata Sports Club managed 241 for eight in 36 overs
For AIPSSPB, AW Zaidi {2 for 40} and RS Bisht {2 for 37} were the wicket takers, as it employed eight bowlers.
AB Agarkar accounted for AIPSSPB openers – NS Patawardhan {04} and RS Bisht {01} early in its innings. AIPSSPB could not recover from this early shock as they lost wickets at regular interval and were all out for 168 in 35.4 overs. Akash Malhotra {32} and P Thakur {50} offered some resistance and delayed the inevitable. AB Agarakar {2 for 6} and GA Jathar {2 for 27} were the main wicket takers for Tata Sports Club.
Tata Sports Club gained 5 points from this game while AIPSSPB was awarded minus 1 Point.
Madras Rubber Factory {MRF} won its match over Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) by 12 runs, the match decided under V Jayadevan method at Vizag.
Y Gnaneshwar Rao top scored with 53 runs with four fours in 74 balls in MRF’s innings when it opted to bat first after winning the toss. MRF was dismissed for 191 in 50 overs. AM Salvi picked up 3 for 37 for BPCL.
BPCL were in dire straits losing half its side for 58 runs. The wreker-in-chief was PK Dharma, the right arm medium pace bowler who was introduced as first change, picked up three wickets.
At the first rain intervention, BPCL were 86 for 5. The target was revised to 185 in 46 overs. There was another rain intervention when BPCL were 120 for 6 in 28.3 overs. No further play was possible after the second rain intervention. The target for a win at this stage was 133. MRF was declared winners by 12 runs as BPCL were 120 for 6 at this stage.
MRF gained four points for their victory, while BPCL could not get any points for their loss.
