CH GAYLE – AN INDELIBLE PRINT IN T20 WORLD CUP

CH GAYLE – AN INDELIBLE PRINT IN T20 WORLD CUP

CH Gayle has left an indelible print in the T20 World Cup with his heroics. Here are a few statistical titbits of his in seven editions of the World Cup.

He became the first batsman to score a century in the World Cup. He scored 117 runs against South Africa at Johannesburg on 11 Sep 2007, which incidentally was the inaugural match in the world Cup.

West Indies could not win this game and thus his 117 has a dubious record of being a batsman’s first ever century in the World Cup in a losing cause. In fact, his knock remains the only century in a losing case as on date.

He scored one more century – 100 not out against England at Mumbai on 16.03.16 and earned the distinction of becoming the only batsman in the tournament to score centuries on two occasions.

He scored 98 against India at Bridgetown on 09.05.20 to become the second batsman in World Cup to score century and ninety after M Jayawardene of Sri Lanka.

CH Gayle of West Indies owns the record of scoring most boundary sixes in the tournament. He has scored 63 boundary sixes and remains the only batsman to score 50 plus boundary sixes in the tournament.

CH Gayle led West Indies on nine occasions in the World Cup and scored 17 boundary sixes. He owns the record for most boundary sixes by a captain in the World Cup.

His 98 against India at Bridgetown on 09.05.10 remains not only the highest individual innings by a captain in the World Cup, but also the only occasion of a captain scoring a ninety in the World Cup.

He has scored 30 boundary fours while leading West Indies in the World Cup. He is one of the five captains in the World Cup to score 30 plus boundary fours
