India in Sri Lanka – Third Test – Fourth day highlights

India in Sri Lanka – Third Test – Fourth day highlights

KC Sangakkara completed 8000 runs of his test career when he was on 12 during his knock of 28 in Sri Lanka’s second innings. At the end of the third test, his run aggregate stood at 8016. He became the 21st batsman in the world to reach the milestone. He is the second Sri Lankan batsman to achieve the feat after DPMD Jayawardene.

KC Sangakkara completed 8000 runs {8016} in his 152nd innings. He reached the milestone in least number of innings amongst the batsman who have reached 8000 runs. The previous record was held by SR Tendulkar who had reached the milestone in 154 innings.

KC Sangakkara completed 8000 runs in his 91st test. He now shares the record with GS Sobers of West Indies who had also reached 8000 in 91 tests. {Sobers ended his test career with 8039 runs from 91 tests}. Both these two batsmen have reached 8000 runs in least number of tests

KC Sangakkara stands second in the list of batsmen who have taken least number of days to reach 8000 runs – R Dravid {9 years and 173 days}, KC Sangakkara {10 years and 16 days} and RT Ponting {10 years and 25 days}. KC Sangakkara improved upon RT Ponting’s record by nine days.

SL Malinga captured his 100th wicket in tests when he had SR Tendulkar caught at the wicket by HAPW Jayawardene for 41 in this test. At the end of India’s first innings his aggregate stood at 101. He became the 152nd bowler to capture 100 plus wickets in test cricket. He is the third Sri Lankan bowler after M Muralitharan {800} and WPUJC Vaas {355} to total 100 plus wickets in tests

With two catches to his credit in India’s innings, DPMD Jayawardene extended his tally of catches against India to 20. He became the second fieldsman in Sri Lanka-India test series to pouch 20 plus catches after M Azharuddin who has taken 27 catches. He pouched two more catches in India’s second innings to take his tally of catches against India to 22.

At the end of the fourth day of this test, DPMD Jayawardene has aggregated 161 catches. Other fieldsmen who have pouched more catches are – R Dravid {196}, ME Waugh {181}, RT Ponting {172}, SP Fleming {171} and BC Lara {164}

DPMD Jayawardene with four catches in this test so far {two in each innings} has pouched 101 catches on home soil. He earned the distinction of becoming the first fieldsman to pouch 100 plus catches on home soil. Prior to this test he was on par with MA Taylor who has pouched 97 catches. His claimed his 100th catch when he caught V Sehwag of S Randiv for zero in India’s second innings.

TT Samaraweera and BAW Mendis added 118 plus runs for the ninth wicket providing the 45th occasion of batsmen posting a three figure partnership for the ninth wicket in the annals of test cricket. This stand also represents the third occasion of Sri Lankan batsmen posting a three figure partnership for the ninth wicket. Other two occasions are – 101 runs between ST Jayasuriya and CRD Fernando vs Pakistan at Faisalabad in Oct 2004 and 105 runs between WPUJC Vaas and KMDN Kulasekara vs England at Lord’s in May 2006. Thus the 118 runs partnership between TT Samaraweera and BAW Mendis in this game represent the highest three figure partnership by Sri Lankan batsman for the ninth wicket

The 118 runs stand between TT Samaraweera and BAW Mendis represent not only the highest stand for the ninth wicket against India but also the first three figure partnership for the ninth wicket against India. Sri Lanka’s previous best stand was 73 runs stand between TT Samaraweera and BAW Mendis at Kanpur in Nov 2009.

The 118 runs stand between TT Samaraweera and BAW Mendis represent the highest stand for the ninth wicket against India on home soil. Sri Lanka’s previous best stand at home soil for ninth wicket was 98 runs stand between CRD Fernando and HAPW Jayawardene vs England at Col-SSC in Dec 2007

TT Samaraweera and BAW Mendis added 118 plus runs for the ninth wicket providing the sixth occasion of batsmen posting a three figure partnership for the ninth wicket against India. The other five occasions are – 106 runs between DS Atkinson and RJ Christiani of West Indies at Delhi in Nov 1948, 161 runs between CH Lloyd and AME Roberts of West Indies at Kolkata in Dec 1983, 136 runs between IDS Smith and MC Snedden of New Zealand at Auckland in Feb 1990, 133 runs between SR Waugh and JN Gillespie at Kolkata in Mar 2001 ad 103 runs between C White and MJ Hoggard at Nottingham in Aug 2002

HAPW Jayawardene collected his first ball duck in Sri Lanka’s second innings providing the 1258th occasion of a batsman dismissed of the first ball in a test innings. His dismissal for zero of the first ball in this test provide the 103rd occasion of a wicket keeper batsman collecting the first ball duck in a test innings.

HAPW Jayawardene’s first ball duck in this test provide the seventh occasion of a Sri Lankan wicket keeper collecting the first ball duck in a test innings. He has been dismissed for a first ball duck on three occasions – vs Australia at Hobart in Nov 2007, vs Bangladesh at Chittagong in Jan 2009 and vs India at Col-PSS in Aug 2010. He holds the record for most first ball ducks by a Sri Lankan wicket keeper. He wrested the record from KC Sangakkara who had collected two first ball ducks.

HAPW Jayawardne became the 13th wicket keeper batsman to collect the first ball ducks on three or more occasions. The complete list read thus – IA Healy of Aus {06}, AC Gilchrist of Aus {04}, RD Jacobs of Win {04}, IDS Smith of NZl {04}, PJL Dujon of Win {03}, TG Evans of Eng {03}, HAPW Jayawardene of Srl {03}, Khaled Mashud of Ban {03}, JR Murray of Win {03}, DJ Richardson of SAF {03}, AJ Stewart of Eng {03}, Wasim Bari of Pak {03} and D Williams of Win {03}
