A World record was created when Indian openers RG Sharma and YBK Jaiswal scored 103 and 171 respectively in India’s first innings against West Indies in the just concluded test at Roseau. It was the fir the first time in the annals of test cricket that a captain opener and a debutant openers scores centuries in the same innings of a test.

Ishan Kishan became the 35th wicket keeper batsman to represent India in tests. He also became the third Indian wicket keeper batsman to make his test debut against West Indies.

Ishan Kishan became the 18th wicket keeper batsman to represent India in tests on away soil, He also became the third Indian wicket keeper batsman to make his test debut against West Indies in West Indies.

R Ashwin has four five wicket hauls against West Indies. He captured five for 60 in West Indies’ first innings which fetched him his fifth five wicket haul against West Indies and with it he would become the second Indian bowler to capture five five wicket hauls against West Indies. Harbhajan Singh has five five wicket hauls against West Indies.

R Ashwin’s five for 60 in West Indies’ first innings represent his 33rd five wicket haul of his test career. A Kumble with 35 five wicket hauls is ahead of R Ashwin in terms of most five wicket hauls by Indian bowlers.

Other bowlers to capture 33 plus five wicket hauls in the annals of test cricket are – M Muralitharan  {67}, SK Warne {37}, RJ Hadlee {36}, A Kumble {35} and HMRKB Herath {34}.

R Ashwin took the wicket of T Chanderpaul in the first innings of this test. He has captured the wicket of his father S Chanderpaul also earlier. He became the fifth bowler in the annals of test cricket to capture the wickets of “Father and Son”

RG Sharma-YBK Jaiswal opened the innings for India in this test to provide the 164th opening pair. It also provides the 106th opening pair on away soil

West Indies and India have played 98 tests so far. West Indies has won 30 tests and India has won 22 tests tests. 46 tests between the two teams have ended in a draw

India has played 51 tests against West Indies in West Indies. It has won 09 tests, lost 16 tests and 26 tests were drawn

India is scheduled to play two tests in the ensuing test series at Roseau and at Port of Spain. This is the second occasion India is playing two tests against West Indies in West Indies. The earlier occasion was in 2019 when the two teams clashed at Kingston and at North Sound. India won both the tests. Kingston test was won by 257 runs and the North Sound test by 318 runs.

The second test at Port of Spain will mark the 100th test between the two teams. West Indies and India would become the ninth opponents to play 100 tests in the annals of test cricket.

England won the third test against Australia by three wickets to provide the 111th occasion of England carving a test win against Australia. It also provides the 54th occasion of England winning a test against Australia on home soil. It also provides the ninth occasion of England winning a test against Australia in the tests played at Leeds.

England won the third test against Australia by three wickets to provide the seventh occasion of England carving a test win against Australia after inserting the opposition. It also provides the fourth occasion of England winning a test against Australia on home soil after inserting the opposition. It also provides the second occasion of England winning a test against Australia in the tests played at Leeds after inserting the opposition. The first such occasion was in Aug 2019 when England won the test by one wicket after inserting the opposition at Leeds.

It is interesting to note that England has won on five occasions by an innings margin and on two occasions by runs margin against Australia after inserting the opposition.

MA Starc captured five for 78 in England’s second innings to provide the 300th occasion of an Australian bowler capturing five or more wickets in an innings against England. MA Starc captured five for 78 in England’s second innings to provide the 21st occasion of an Australian left arm pace bowler capturing five or more wickets in an innings against England. It also provides the eighth occasion of an Australian left arm pace bowler capturing five or more wickets in an innings against England in England. It also provides the fourth occasion of an Australian left arm pace bowler capturing five or more wickets in an innings against England in tests played at Leeds.

MA Starc’s five for 78 provides the fourth occasion of his capturing five or more wickets in an innings against Australia. He became the third left arm pace bowler to capture five or more wickets in an innings against Australia on four plus occasions. Others are – AK Davidson {05} and MG Johnson {05}. MA Starc’s aggregate of wickets against England read 87 at the end of this test. He now holds the record for most wickets by a left arm pace bowler against Englanf jointly with MG Johnson. MG Johnson has also taken 87 wickets as left arm pace bowler against England. MA Starc went past AK Davidson’s tally of 84 wickets to hold the record jointly with MG Johnson.

MA Starc’s five for 78 in this test represents his 14th five wicket haul. He now holds the record for most five wickets hauls by an Australian left arm pace bowler with AK Davidson. AK Davidson also has 14 five wicket hauls to his credit.

Wasim Akram is the only left arm pace bowler to have more five wicket hauls than AK Davidson and MA Starc in the annals of test cricket. Wasim Akram has 25 five wicket hauls to his credit.

PJ Cummins’ {6-91} and MA Starc’s {5-78} were in losing cause to provide the  68th and 69th occasion of Australian bowler’s five wicket hauls going in vain against England. It also provides the 35th and 36th occasion of Australian bowler’s five wicket hauls going in vain against England. It also provides the sixth and seventh occasion of Australian bowler’s five wicket hauls going in vain against England in tests played at Leeds.

PJ Cummins’ {6-91} was in losing cause to provide the third occasion of Australian captain’s six wicket haul going in vain against England. It also provides the first occasion of Australian captain’s six wicket haul going in vain against England. It also provides the first occasion of Australian captain’s six wicket haul going in vain against England in tests played at Leeds.

G Giffen {6-155} at Melbourne in Dec 1894, MA Noble {7-100} at Sydney in Feb 1904 and PJ Cummins {6-91} at Leeds in Jul 2023 are the three Australian captains to witness their six plus wicket hauls going in vain against England. The interval between MA Noble’s feat and PJ Cummins’ feat is 109 years.

PJ Cummins became the first Australian captain to witness his six wicket haul in a losing cause against England in England.

In the event of teams finishing on equal points in their Group

a) The team with the greatest number of wins in its Group will be placed in the higher position.

b) If there are teams with equal points and equal wins in the Group stage, then in such case the team with the higher net run rate in the Group stage will be placed in the higher position

c) If two or more teams are still equal, they will be ordered according to the head to head match played between them (points then net run rate in those matches).

d) If the above does not resolve the Group ordering, or if all matches within a Group produce no results, then any tied teams will be ordered as per their original Group Stage seedings and the top 3 teams in each Group will progress to the Super Six stage.

It also provides the sixth occasion of an Australian bowler capturing six or more wickets in an innings against England in the tests played at Leeds.

PJ Cummins of Australia returned with figures of 6 for 91 in England’s first innings to provide the 77th occasion of an Australian pace bowler capturing six or more wickets in an innings against England. It also provides the 34th   occasion of an Australian pace bowler capturing six or more wickets in an innings against England in England. It also provides the fifth occasion of an Australian pace bowler capturing six or more wickets in an innings against England in the tests played at Leeds.

PJ Cummins of Australia returned with figures of 6 for 91 in England’s first innings to provide the fifth occasion of an Australian captain capturing six or more wickets in an innings against England.

It is interesting to note that no Australian captain has ever taken a five wicket haul against England at Leeds prior to PJ Cummins’ feat of six for 91 in this test. The previous best bowling figures by an Australian captain against England at Leeds is credited to WM Armstrong who had returned with figures of two for six in the fourth innings of the test in July 1921 – 102 years back

Headingly, Leeds is hosting its 26th test between England and Australia.

England won the toss and inserted the opposition in this test.  It provides the 32nd occasion of England doing so against Australia. It also provides the fourth occasion of England doing so against Australia at Leeds

Australia was dismissed all out for 263 in the first innings of this test to provide the 64th occasion of Australia dismissed all out against England in the first innings of the test. It also provides the twelfth such occasion at Leeds.

MR Marsh posted his third test century when he scored 118 in this test. All his three centuries have come against England.  His other two centuries are – 181 at Perth in Dec 2017 and 101 at Sydney in Jan 2018. Thus his century in this against England represent his first century in England.

GR Marsh and MR Marsh form the Father and son Pair to score a century against England in England. GR Marsh had scored 138 against England at Nottingham in Aug 1989. MR Marsh scored 118 against England at Leeds in this test.

It also provides the 131st occasion of England bowler capturing five or more wickets in an innings against Australia at home. It also provides the 21st occasion of England bowler capturing five or more wickets in an innings against Australia in tests played at Leeds.

It’s a known fact that any test series between two teams throws up some interesting statistics. I have unearthed a few such statistics in India-Australia test series which are interesting and would like to share with netizens

Test Cricket witnessed – perhaps for the first time – rival bowlers capturing 100 wickets in the same test against their opposition in India-Australia Test series R Ashwin for India captured his 100th wicket against Australia and NM Lyon captured 100 wickets against India. By a coincidence, R Ashwin and NM Lyon are off spin bowlers in their trade. This feat was achieved by the two bowlers at Delhi between India and Australia in Feb 2023

It is an amazing coincidence that two rival batsmen in India-Australia Test series ended with an identical number of runs against each other at the end of a test after completing 2000 plus runs against each other in the same test. Perhaps, the only occasion in the annals of test cricket

V Kohli’s aggregate runs against Australia read 2042 at the end of WTC Final between Australia and India at The Oval. He completed 2000 runs against Australia in this test. SPD Smith’s run aggregate against India read 2042 at the end of this test. He also completed 2000 runs against India in this test.
