This series witnessed 50 fifties scored by batsmen – 22 by England batsmen and 28 by Indian batsmen – providing the second occasion of 50 fifties scored by batsmen in a test series. The other occasion was the six test Ashes series between England and Australia in 1993. Thus both these occasions are witnessed on England soil. Thus for the first time in a five test series 50 fifties have been scored in the annals of test cricket.
This series witnessed 21 centuries scored by batsmen providing the third occasion of 20 plus centuries scored by batsmen in a test series. The other occasions are the series – between Australia and West Indies in West Indies in 1955 in which 21 centuries were scored and the series between West Indies and South Africa in South Africa 2003-04 in which 20 centuries were scored. Thus for the first time in a five test series 21 centuries have been scored as the other two series were of four tests.
This series has produced 7187 runs to provide the second occasion of a test series a test series producing an aggregate of 7000 plus runs in the annals of test cricket,. The first occasion was in the six test Ashes series 1993 which produced 7221 runs
The 7187 runs scored in this series provided the record for most runs scored in a five test series. The previous record was 6826 runs in the five test Ashes series played in Australia in 1928-29
JE Root registered his 13th century against India to become the third batsman to score 13 or more centuries against a specific opposition in the annals of test cricket. Others are – DG Bradman – 19 against England and SM Gavaskar – 13 against West Indies
CR Woakes of England did not bat in its first innings against India in the on-going fifth and final test at The Oval and the England’s first innings score card read – “CR Woakes – absent” to provide the 175th occasion of a batsman absent in a test innings. All such occasions are tabulated below
