India won the toss in this game providing the 20th occasion of India winning the toss in India-Sri Lanka Test series. Out of the previous 19 encounters, when India had won the toss, India has won nine tests, lost two tests and eights tests were drawn
India is playing its tenth test at Motera, Ahmedabad. Out of the previous nine tests, it has won three tests, lost two tests and four tests were drawn.
SR Tendulkar equaled the series record of 20 appearances held by A Ranatunga of Sri Lanka. Ahmedabad test was SR Tendulkar’s 20th appearance against Sri Lanka. SR Tendulkar became the first Indian cricketer to play 20 tests against Sri Lanka.
R Dravid was playing his 15th test against Sri Lanka at Ahmedabad and joined the select band cricketers who have played 15 or more tests in India-Sri Lanka test series – A Ranatunga of Sri Lanka {20}, PA de Silva of Sri Lanka {19}, SR Tendulkar of India {20}, A Kumble of India {18}, M Muralitharan of Sri Lanka {18} and M Azharuddin of India {17}. He became the fourth Indian cricketer to play 15 or more tests against Sri Lanka after SR Tendulkar, A Kumble and M Azharuddin
R Dravid with 980 runs prior to the start of the series, completed 1000 runs aggregate against Sri Lanka when he was on 20 during the course of his first innings knock of 177 not out on the first day . At the end of first day’s play, Dravid’s aggregate stood at 1157. Dravid became the fourth Indian batsman to aggregate 1000 plus runs against Sri Lanka. Others are SR Tendulkar {1412}, M Azharuddin {1215} and SC Ganguly {1064}.
Ahmedabad Test would be the 70th test at home for SR Tendulkar. He would become the first Indian cricketer to play 70 tests at home. Others who have played 70 plus tests at home are – SR Waugh of Australia {89}, AR Border of Australia {86}, GA Gooch of England {74}, AJ Stewart of England {74}, RT Ponting of Australia {73}, M Muralitharan of Sri Lanka {72} and JH Kallis of South Africa {72}. Thus SR Tendulkar would become the eighth cricketer in the annals of test cricket to appear in 70 plus tests at home.
Ahmedabad test apparaance was SR Tendulkar’s 160th test appearances. He became the second cricketer in the annals of test cricket to play 160 plus tests after SR Waugh of Australia who has 168 test appearances to his credit.
Tendulkar became the first batsman in the world to aggregate 5000 runs on home soil while batting at number. Prior to the start of this test, he had an aggregate of 4999 runs. With a boundary four, he reached the land mark and at the end of his innings, his aggregate stood at 5003.
VVS Laxman’s zero provides the 35th occasion of Indian batsman scoring zero in a test innings against Sri Lanka. It also represents VVS Laxman’s first zero against Sri Lanka in tests
VVS Laxman’s zero represents 12th zero of his test career. Other Indian batsmen who have scored exact 12 zeroes are – SM Gavaskar and M Amaranath
SR Tendulkar was dismissed bowled in the first innings providing the 41st occasion of his being dismissed bowled in a test innings. He equaled the Indian record of a batsman dismissed bowled on most occasions held by GR Viswanath who was also dismissed bowled on 41 occasions. AR Border of Australia {53}, JR Reid of New Zealand {44} and JH Kallis of South Africa {42} are the batsmen who are dismissed bowled on more occasions than SR Tendulkar and GR Viswanath.
R Dravid’s fifty { 177*} at the end of the first day represents his 65th fifty while batting at number three in a test innings. Only RT Ponting of Australia {66} has scored more fifties than R Dravid while batting at number three.
R Dravid’s fifty {177*} at the end of the second day represents the 84th fifty of his test career. SR Tendulkar {95}, AR Border {90}, RT Ponting {86} are the three batsmen who have scored more fifties than R Dravid.
R Dravid hit a boundary six during the course of his innings of 177 not out at the end of the first day, which represents the 16th six of his test career.
R Dravid and Yuvraj Singh added 125 runs for the fourth wicket and R Dravid and MS Dhoni added 224 runs for the fifth wicket, providing the 77th and 78th occasions of R Dravid being one of the partner in a three figure partnerships.
R Dravid with his 177 not out on the first day in this game has now ten fifties to his credit {02 C plus 08 HC} against Sri Lanka. He became the third batsman after M Jayawardene {11 fifties} and SR Tendulkar {10 fifties} to score ten or more fifties in India-Sri Lanka test series.
R Dravid and SR Tendulkar now share the record of most fifties by Indian batsmen against Sri Lanka. Both the batsmen have scored ten fifties.
R Dravid and MS Dhoni added 224 runs for the sixth wicket which represents the 51st occasion of Indian batsmen posting a 200 plus runs partnership against various oppositions in a test innings.
