SPD Smith’s distinction – becomes the first Australian captain to score two unbeaten fifties in a test match

SPD Smith of Australia scored 134 not out and 70 not out in the just concluded Boxing day test at Melbourne to provide the third occasion of a captain scoring two unbeaten fifties in a test match in the annals of test cricket. All such occasions are listed below

 

The first captain to accomplish such a feat was GC Grant of West Indies. He scored 53 not out and 71 not out against Adelaide in Dec 1930. SP Fleming of New Zealand was the next to perform the feat in Apr 2003 after 73 years of test cricket. He made 274 not out and 69 not out against Sri Lanka at Colombo-PSS in Apr 2003. SPD Smith of Australia was the next batsman to emulate GC Grant and SP Fleming.  SPD Smith is  the only captain to score two unbeaten fifties in a test match on home soil. GC Grant and SP Fleming had accomplished the feat on away soil. SPD Smith earned the distinction of becoming the first Australian captain to score twin unbeaten fifties in a test. He also became the first captain ever to accomplish such a feat on the Boxing Day test
