Maharashta Cricket Association Stadium, Pune, became the 25th ground to host a test match in India. India became the first team in the annals of test cricket to host test matches on 25 test grounds.

Australia won the toss in this test to provide the 179th occasion of Australia winning the toss on away soil. Australia batted first in this test to provide the 153rd occasion of Australia batting first after winning the toss on away soil.

India opened the bowling through spinner R Ashwin. R Ashwin has opened the bowling in ten innings for India including this innings.

R Ashwin became the fifth bowler in the annals of test cricket to open the bowling as a spin bowler in ten or more innings. Others are – H Trumble of Australia {15 innings},  E Peate of England {14 innings}. R Peel of England {12 innings} and GE Palmer of Australia {10 innings}

R Ashwin’s wicket aggregate of wickets when he has opened the bowling as a spinner read 31 at the end of the first day of this test. MT Renshaw scored 68 in the first innings of this test to provide the 51st occasion of an Australian batsman scoring a fifty against India after winning the toss. It also provides the 31st occasion of an Australian left hand opening batsman scoring a fifty against India after winning the toss.

MT Renshaw earned the distinction of scoring the first boundary six at this ground. His boundary six provides the 101st occasion of an Australian batsman scoring a six against India in India. He became the 47th   Australian batsman to score a boundary six against India in India
