KA Maharaj of South Africa and MA Starc of Australia captured nine wickets in the just concluded test between South Africa and Australia at Durban to provide the second occasion of rival bowlers capturing exact nine wickets in a test in the annals of test cricket on the South African soil. The first such occasion was at Cape Town in Apr 1899 – when S Haigh of England and JH Sinclair of South Africa captured nine wickets each. Both the occasions are tabulated below. Thus such an occasion was witnessed on South African soil after an interval of 118 years 11 months.
