India won the toss and elected to bat first in this test to provide the 134th occasion of India doing so in a test on home soil. It also provides the 19th occasion of India doing so against Australia on home soil.

RG Sharma was dismissed stumped for 12 in the first innings of this test to provide the eleventh occasion of an Indian captain dismissed stumped in a test innings. It also provides the second occasion of an Indian captain dismissed stumped in a test innings against Australia. The first such occasion was witnessed at Chennai in Jan 1960, when GS Ramchand was dismissed stumped for 22 by Grout of the bowling of R Benaud.

It also provides the 65th occasion of an Australian bowler capturing five or more wickets in a test innings against India.

SPD Smith’s run aggregate as Australian captain read 3819 at the end of his innings of 26 in this test. He became the fifth Australian captain to score 3800 plus runs. Others are AR Border {6623}, RT Ponting {6542}, GS Chappell {4209} and MJ Clarke {3946}

India was dismissed all out for 109 in its first innings to provide the ninth occasion of India dismissed all out for a total less than 110 runs in a test innings against Australia. It also provides the fourth occasion of India dismissed all out for a total less than 110 runs in a test innings against Australia on home soil

NM Lyon’s three wickets in India’s first innings fetched him an aggregate of 105 wickets against India. He now shares the second place amongst the bowlers who have taken most wickets against India with M Muralitharan of Sri Lanka. Muralitharan has also taken 105 wickets against India. The first place is occupied by JM Anderson of England who has an aggregate of 139 wickets against India.
