Some times in test match circumstances, especially in England, require the services of substitute fielder among the local ground staff. In 1930, in the first test between England and Australia at Trent Bridge, the place of a second substitute was taken by SH Coply and he took a brilliant catch to dismiss McCabe. In another test match between England and West Indies at Lord’s in 1984, the services of Donald Topley – a local ground staff – was utilized by West Indies. Topley took a spectacular low left handed catch on the edge of the boundary from Bob Willis who hit a bouncer off Malcolm Marshall. But the impetus of his run caused him to teeter over the rope, so, no catch but six runs were awarded.
