England won the toss and elected to bat first in this test to provide the 60th occasion of England doing so against India. It also provides the 30th occasion of England doing so against India in India

JE Root had scored nine centuries against India prior to the start of this test. His 106 not out in England’s second innings fetched his tenth century against India and with it the record of scoring most centuries against India. SPD Smith of India has scored nine centuries against India.

JE Root-BT Foakes added 113 runs for the sixth wicket in England’s first innings to provide the 164th occasion of England batsmen posting a three figure partnership against India. It also provides the 69th occasion of England batsmen posting a three figure partnership against India on away soil.
