SV Samson of Rajasthan and KL Rahul of Lucknow scored 82 not out and 58 in this game to provide the 24th  occasion of rival captains scoring fifties in the tournament.

SV Samson of Rajasthan and KL Rahul of Lucknow scored 82 not out and 58 in this game to provide the 22nd occasion of rival wicket keepers scoring fifties in the tournament.

KL Rahul’s 58 in this game was in a losing cause to provide the 129th occasion of a captain’s fifty going in vain in the tournament. It also provides the 109th occasion of a wicket keeper’s fifty in a losing cause and also provides the 18th occasion of a captain wicket keeper’s fifty in a losing cause in the tournament

Match No 05 – Mumbai Vs Titans at Ahmedabad on 24.03.24 – Titans won by 06 runs

HH Pandya became the eighth cricketer and fourth Indian cricketer to lead Mumbai in the tournament.  HH Pandya became the 18th captain to lead two teams in the tournament.  This game was his first captaincy assignment for Mumbai. Prior to this he had led Titans in 30 games in the tournament.

Ishan Kishan was dismissed for zero in this game to provide the 83rd occasion of a wicket keeper scoring zero in the tournament. It also represents the 17th occasion of a Mumbai wicket keeper scoring zero in the tournament. It also represents his fifth zero in the tournament and a record for most zeroes by a Mumbai wicket keeper in the tournament.

Titans won this game by six runs to provide the 92nd occasion of a team winning a game by single digit runs. It also represents Titan’s second single digit runs win in the tournament. It also provides the tenth occasion of a team winning the game by exact six runs in the tournament.

It is interesting to note that in all these three occasions, one of the batsmen was leading the respective team. In the first instance, IM Chappell was captaining Australia, in the second instance, Misbah-ul-Haq was leading Pakistan and in the third instance DM de Silva was captaining Sri Lanka.

The interval between the first and second occasion was 40 years {1974 and 2014} and the interval between the second and third occasion is 20 years {2014 and 2024}

Match Number 01 – Chennai Vs Bangalore at Chennai on 22.03.24 – Chennai won by six wickets

RD Gaekwad became the 66th captain to lead a team in the tournament. He also became the fourth captain to lead Chennai in the tournament.  Others are – MS Dhoni, SK Raina and RA Jadeja.

Mustafizur Rehman returned with four for 29 – his maiden four wicket haul in the tournament

V Kohli’s run aggregate against Chennai  read 1006 at the end of this game. He became the second batsman to score 1000 plus runs against Chennai in the tournament. S  Dhawan has scored 1057 runs against Chennai in the tournament.

Match Number 02 – Delhi Vs Punjab at Mullanpur on 23.03.24 – Punjab won by four wickets

Mullanpur became the 36th venue to host an IPL game in the tournament. RR Pant was playing his first cricket match after his life threatening car accident in Dec 2021

Match Number 03 – Kolkata Vs Sunrisers at Kolkata on 23.03.24 – Kolkata won by four runs

SS Iyer scored zero and PD Salt scored 54 in this game to provide the second occasion of a captain and wicket keeper from the same team scoring zero and fifty in a game in the tournament.

PD Salt scored 54 and H Klassen scored 63 in this game to provide the 21st occasion of rival wicket  keepers scoring fifties in the tournament.

Kolkata won this game by four runs to provide the 92nd occasion of a team winning a game by single digit runs in the tournament.  It also provides the eighth occasion of Kolkata winning a game by single digit runs in the tournament.  It also provides the 13th occasion of a team winning the tournament by exact four runs.

There are four cricketers who have led the teams in 100 plus matches  in the tournament. MS Dhoni is the only cricketer to lead in 200 plus matches. He has led in 226  matches – most for a captain. IPL has 16 editions and the ensuing edition will be the 17th edition. A peep into the previous sixteen editions will unfold the following interesting statistical nuggets/feats.

Chennai and Mumbai have won on five occasions – most occasions of a team winning the IPL.

Eight teams have played 100 plus matches of which seven teams have played 200 plus matches.  Mumbai owns the record for playing most matches – 248 matches.  Mumbai needs two more matches to become the first team to play 250 matches in the tournament.

Seven teams have won 100 plus matches in the tournament.  Mumbai owns the record for winning most matches – 138 matches.  

Six teams have lost 100 plus matches in the tournament. Delhi owns the dubious record of losing most matches – 127 matches.

Six teams have won 100 plus matches and lost 100 plus matches. Mumbai owns the record for winning most matches {138} and Delhi own the record for losing most matches {127}

Two teams have scored 250 plus runs in the tournament.

There are 170 occasions of teams posting 200 plus runs in an innings in the tournament. The following four teams have posted 200 plus runs in 20 plus occasions.  Bangalore {24}, Chennai {28},Mumbai {21} and Punjab {20}. Chennai owns the record for posting 200 plus runs on most occasions – 28. It needs two more occasions to become the first team to post 200 plus runs on 30 occasions. Bangalore needs one more occasion to post 200 plus runs in an innings on 25 occasions.

M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore owns the record for having most occasions of 200 plus runs scored on it. As many as 27 occasions are witnessed at Bangalore. Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai has witnessed 21 such occasions.   These two grounds are the only two grounds to witness 20 plus occasions of 200 plus runs scored on them.

Mumbai as a city has witnessed 37 occasions of teams scoring 200 plus runs – Mum-WS {21}, Mum-BS {10} and Mum-DYP {06}.

The tournament has witnessed Teams posting 200 plus runs on 20 plus occasions against three teams – Punjab {26}, Bangalore {23} and Chennai {20}.

The tournament has witnessed 46 occasions of both teams posting 200 plus runs. It has also witnessed a similar number of occasions of teams losing a game after scoring 200 plus runs. Teams have lost the game on 24 occasions when they have posted 200 plus runs while batting first and have lost the game on 22 occasions when they have posted 200 plus while batting second.

There are 25 occasions of a team chasing a total of 200 plus runs in the tournament. The highest run chase was by Rajasthan against Punjab at Sharjah on 27.09.20.  Punjab’s total of 224 was chased by Rajasthan by posting 226-6 and Rajasthan won by four wickets

The tournament has witnessed 41 occasions of a team posting 100 and less than 100 runs in a completed innings. Delhi own the record of being dismissed for a total of 100 and less than 100 runs in a completed innings on most occasions – ten occasions. The lowest total in a completed innings is 49 by Bangalore against Kolkata at Kolkata on 23.04.17.

Bangalore holds the record for posting the highest total by a team and also the lowest total by a team in the tournament. The highest and the lowest total of the tournament was posted by Bangalore on the same date, same month but with a difference of four years – an amazing coincidence indeed

There are 18 occasions of a team dismissed all out for a total of 100 and less than 100 runs in a completed innings while batting first and  23 occasions of a team dismissed all out for a total of 100 and less than 100 runs in a completed innings while batting second.

There are ten occasions of a team winning a game by 100 plus runs in the tournament. The largest margin of win is by 146 runs – Mumbai beating Delhi at Delhi on 06.05.17. Bangalore holds the record of winning most games by 100 plus runs margin – four occasions.

There are fifteen occasions of a team winning a game without losing a wicket in the tournament.  Bangalore has won four games without losing a wicket – most occasions by any team.

There are eight occasions of a team winning a game by 50 deliveries to spare in the second innings.  Mumbai won by 87 deliveries to spare in the second innings against Kolkata at Mumbai on 1605.08 is the record for a team to win a game with most deliveries to spare in the second innings in the tournament.

There are eight occasion of a team winning a game by one run and three occasions of a team winning a game by one wicket in the tournament.

The tournament has witnessed fourteen tied games and 41 occasions of a team winning a game on the last ball of the match.

SS Iyer of Mumbai scored 95 in Mumbai’s second innings against Vidarbha in the finals of Ranji Trophy season 2023-24 to provide the 52nd occasion of a batsman scoring a ninety in the finals of the Ranji Trophy. It also provides the 17th occasion of a Mumbai batsman scoring a ninety in the finals of a Ranji Trophy.

HS Dubey of Vidarbha captured five for 144 in the first innings against Mumbai the finals of Ranji Trophy season 2023-24 to provide the 116th occasion of a bowler capturing five or more wickets in an innings in the finals of the Ranji Trophy. It also provides the fourth occasion of a Vidarbha bowler capturing five or more wickets in an innings in the finals of a Ranji Trophy.

HS Dubey of Vidarbha captured five for 144 in the first innings against Mumbai the finals of Ranji Trophy season 2023-24 to provide the 164th occasion of a bowler capturing five or more wickets in an innings in the Ranji Trophy season 2023-24.
