Batsmen’s centuries in losing cause in Indian Premier League

Batsmen’s centuries in losing cause in Indian Premier League

SPD Smith’s 111 for Rising Pune Supergiants against Gujarat Lions at Pune-SRS on 29.04.16 went in vain to provide the sixth occasion of a batsman’s hundred going in vain in the history of IPL. The following table lists all such occasions

No   Pos Batsman Runs Team Oppn Venue Date
1   04 A Symonds 117* Deccan Rajasthan Hyd-RGS 24.04.08
2   05 YK Pathan 100 Rajasthan Mumbai Mum-BS 13.03.10

The first such instance was witnessed when A Symond’s 117 not out went in vain in the game between Deccan Chargers and Rajasthan Royals at Hyd-RGS on 24.04.08. Batting at number four for Deccan Chargers, A Symonds scored 117 not out with the help of 11 boundary fours and seven boundary sixes. He was at the crease facing 53 deliveries. Riding on A Symond’s century, Deccan Charges posted 214 runs for the loss of five wickets in the allotted twenty overs. A Symonds and RG Sharma were concerned in a fourth wicket partnership which realized 111 runs. MM Patel of Rajasthan Royals leaked 55 runs without capturing a wicket

Rajasthan Royals won the game with a ball to spare. GC Smith {73} and YK Pathan {61} and their second wicket partnership worth 98 runs laid the foundation for Rajasthan Royal’s facile win with a ball to spare. M Kaif {34} and skipper SK Warne {22 not out} were the other contributors to Rajasthan Royal’s win.

17 runs were needed for a win in the last over. A Symonds – the batting hero of Deccan Charges became its bowling villain – as he was hit for 19 runs in five balls. Rajasthan Royal’s skipper hit him for a boundary four of third ball and smote him for two consecutive boundary sixes of fourth and fifth deliveries to clinch a thrilling win for his team. A Symond’s said : “I’ve probably bowled the worst last over in Twenty20 history. Twenty20 is good for the game but not for the ego.”

This is how the numero uno cricket portal espncricinfo.com described the eventful fourth and fifth deliveries bowled by A Symonds

19.4 – Symonds to Warne, SIX, Goodness! Warne steps down and clubs that high into the second tier over deep midwicket, how that changes things!

19.5 – Symonds to Warne, SIX, the captain blazes and what a sensational win! Warne steps down the track and carts a half volley just over the deep extra cover rope. All players in the dugout rush onto the field and Yusuf Pathan jumps on top of Warne, the guys in blue are simply ecstatic

The second occasion of an IPL hundred going in vain is witnessed in the game between Rajasthan Royals and Mumbai Indians at Mum-BS on 13.03.10. The batsman who scored the hundred was Yousuf Pathan of Rajasthan Royals. He made an exact 100 and his team lost the game. Mumbai Indians won this game by 04 runs.

Batting first, after winning the toss, Mumbai Indians posted 212 for 8 in the allotted twenty overs. The innings was built round the useful knocks by SS Tiwari {53} and AT Rayudu {55}. These two batsmen added 110 runs for the fourth wicket which was the contributory factor for Mumbai Indian’s total.

Chasing a mammoth total, Rajasthan Royals lost its first four wickets with the score board reading a paltry 66. But Yousuf Pathan had other ideas. He stitched a fifth wicket century partnership with P Dogra which realized 107 runs in just 7.5 overs. Yousuf Pathan’s contribution to the partnership was huge. He scored 86 runs, while P Dogra’s contribution was mere 18 runs.

Mumbai Indians claimed the fifth wicket in the form of run out of Yousuf Pathan who made an exact 100 in this game. This wicket fell at 173 when Rajasthan Royals required 38 runs for a win. Mumbai Indian’s put the pressure on Rajasthan Royals to ensure that they did not the 38 runs and won the game with the victory margin of four runs. Yousuf Pathan’s 100 came in 37 balls with the help of nine boundary fours and eight boundary sixes. This game witnessed the first ever occasion of rival teams posting a three figure partnership in an IPL game and also the fifth occasion of both the teams posting the team total of 200 plus runs in an IPL game. Yousuf Pathan remains the only batsman in the entire IPL to be dismissed runout after scoring a hundred. He had made an exact 100 before he was dismissed run out in this game. Yousuf Pathan’s 100 in vain is the only occasion of a batsman’s hundred in vain while chasing.

The third occasion of a batsman’s hundred in vain in IPL is SR Tendulkar’s 100 not out in the game between Mumbai Indians against Kochi Tuskers at Mumbai on 15.04.11. It also provides the first occasion of a captain’s hundred in a losing cause in IPL. Put into bat by Kochi Tuskers, Mumbai Indians posted 182 for 2 in its twenty overs thanks to SR Tendulkar {100*} and AT Rayudu {53} and their partnership which was worth 116 runs for the second wicket. It was on the foundation laid by DJ Jacobs and SR Tendulkar who had added 61 runs for the first wicket.

SR Tendulkar’s 100 not out was made in 66 deliveries and studded with 12 boundary fours and three boundary sixes. AT Rayudu {53} and SR Tendulkar {59} contributed to the second wicket partnership of 116 runs which came in 11.2 overs

Kochi Tusker’s openers BB McCullum and DPMD Jayawardene were concerned in a first wicket stand of 128 runs in 13.5 overs which made the chase easy. BB McCullum and DPMD Jayawardene contribution to the first wicket stand was 62 and 56 respectively. BB McCullum scored 81 in 60 deliveries with 10 boundary fours and two boundary sixes, while skipper DPMD Jayawardene scored 56 in 36 deliveries with nine boundary fours.
