This stand also represents the fourth occasion of a three figure partnership for the fourth wicket by Sri Lankan batsmen against India.

DPMD Jayawardene and TT Samaraweera added 138 runs for the fourth wicket providing the 11th occasion of Sri Lankan batsmen posting a three figure partnership against India on Indian soil. This stand also represents the first occasion of a three figure partnership for the fourth wicket by Sri Lankan batsmen against India on Indian soil. The previous best was 69 runs partnership for the fourth wicket between RL Dias and AP Gurusinha at Kanpur in Dec 96.

TT Samaraweera with his 70 registered his 20th half century and 31st half century, while DPMD Jayawardene with his 204 not out registered his 58h fifty.

This stand also represents the second occasion of a three figure partnership for the sixth wicket posted by Sri Lankan batsmen against India. The first occasion was the 103 runs partnership between PA de Silva and HDPK Dharmasena at Mohali in Nov 97. Thus the 216 runs unfinished stand between DPMD Jayawardene and HAPW Jayawardene for the sixth wicket in this game represents the record stand for the sixth wicket by Sri Lankan batsmen against India.

Sri Lankan innings contained three three figure stands – TM Dilshan and KC Sangakkara added 115 runs for the second wicket, DPMD Jayawardene and TT Samaraweera added 138 runs for the fourth wicket and DPMD Jayawardene and HAPW Jayawardene added 216 runs in an unfinished stand for the sixth wicket, providing the 136th occasion of a team posting three or more three figure stands in an innings in the annals of test cricket.

As far as Sri Lanka is concerned, the three three figure partnerships in this innings provide the eighth occasion and also the second occasion against India.

DPMD Jayawardene’s 204 not out represent the 12th double hundred by a visiting batsman on Indian soil and he became the first Sri Lankan batsman to score a double hundred on Indian soil. Incidentally, it was his first hundred on Indian soil.

DPMD Jayawardene’s 204 not out represent the 27th hundred of his test career. He is on par with R Dravid {who also notched up his 27th test hundred in this test} and AR Border of Australia in terms of hundreds scored. Tendulkar {42}, RT Ponting {38}, SM Gavaskar {34}, BC Lara {34}, SR Waugh {32}, JH Kallis {31}, ML Hayden {30} and DG Bradman {29} are the other batsmen who have scored 27 or more test hundreds in the annals of test cricket.

DPMD Jayawardene became the third batsman to aggregate 1000 plus runs in 2009. He reached the milestone when he was on 179 during his knock of 204 not out. At the end of the first day, his aggregate stood at 1025. The other two batsmen are – TT Samaraweera of Sri Lanka {1153} and AJ Strauss {1071}. Jayawardene is the second Sri Lankan batsman to aggregate 1000 plus runs in 2009 after TT Samaraweera.

DPMD Jayawardene’s run aggregate against India at the end of the third day stood at 1365. He has now the most runs by a Sri Lankan batsman against India. He wrested the record from PA de Silva who had an aggregate of 1252.

Sri Lanka’s 591 for 5 at the end of the third day of this test provides the fourth occasion of Sri Lanka posting a team total of 500 plus runs against India. The other three occasions are – 952 for 6 declared at Col-RPS in Aug 97, 610 for 6 declared at Col-SSC in Aug 01 and 600 for 6 declared at Col- SSC in Jul 08.

Sri Lanka’s 591 for 5 at the end of the third day of this test provide their highest team total against India in India. The previous best was 420 all out at Kanpur in Dec 86.
