V Sehwag, G Gambhir and R Dravid scored hundreds in India’s innings providing the tenth occasion of first three batsmen registering hundreds in a test innings. It also represents the third occasion of Indian batsmen achieving this rare feat. The other two occasions were – vs Australia at Sydney in Jan 86 and vs Bangladesh at Mirpur in May 07

It also represents the third occasion of Indian batsmen achieving such a feat. The other two occasions are – vs Australia at Sydney in Jan 86 and vs Bangladesh at Mirpur in May 07

R Dravid and SR Tendulkar added 94 runs for the third wicket. Six runs eluded them from scripting a world record of posting 17 three figure partnerships. R Draivd-SR Tendulkar, CG Greenidge-DL Haynes and ML Hayden-RT Ponting are the three pairs in the annals of test cricket who have posted 16 three figure partnerships

R Dravid and SR Tendulkar added 94 runs for the third wicket providing the 38th occasion of fifty plus runs partnership between the two. As on date they are on par with ML Hayden-RT Ponting who also have 38 fifty plus runs stands. CG Greenidge-DL Haynes {42} and ML Hayden-JL Langer {42} are the other two pairs who have more than 38 fifty plus runs partnerships to their credit.

R Dravid completed his 28th hundred of his test career. He was run out for 144 providing the 14th occasion of an Indian batsman dismissed run out after registering a hundred. Dravid has been dismissed run out on four occasions after scoring a hundred.

R Dravid’s run out for 144 provides the 98th occasion of a batsman dismissed run out after registering a hundreds. R Dravid with his run out in this game now holds the dubious record of being dismissed run out on most occasions in the annals of test cricket. He wrested the record from Sri Lanka’s TT Samaraweera who has been dismissed run out on three occasions.

Dravid at the end of this game has 66 fifties while batting at number three which puts him par with RT Ponting who also has 66 fifties to his credit while batting at number three

R Dravid at the end of India’s innings has an aggregate of 11182 runs. He surpassed AR Border’s 11174 runs and moved to fourth place among the most run getters in test cricket. SR Tendulkar {12917}, BC Lara {11953} and RT Ponting {11345} are the batsmen ahead of R Dravid in terms of test runs

India’s 642 in this innings provides the 19th occasion of India posting a total of 600 plus runs against various oppositions and the second occasion against Sri Lanka, the first occasion being its 676 for 7 in Dec 86. Apart from these two totals of 600 plus runs at Kanpur, India has posted 644 for 7 declared against West Indies in Feb 79, which incidentally was the first occasion of India posting a total of 600 plus runs in a test innings

There are two occasions of four Sri Lankan bowlers conceding 100 plus runs in an innings against India and both were at Kanpur – in Dec 86 and in the current test.

There are four occasions of five Indian batsmen scoring fifties against Sri Lanka – at Bangalore in Jan 94, at Nagpur in Nov 97, at Col-SSC in Feb 99 and in the current test

Muralitharan’s 2 for 175 in this test represent the third occasion of his conceding 175 plus runs in a test innings. The other two occasions are – 2 for 224 vs Australia at Perth in Dec 95 and 4 for 179 vs India at Bangalore in Jan 94.

Herath’s five for 121 represents his first away five wickets haul and the fourth five wicket haul of his test career, which are – 5 for 99 vs Pakistan at Col-PSS in Jul 09, 5 for 121 vs India at Kanpur in Nov 09, 5 for 139 vs New Zealand at Col-SSC in Aug 09 and 5 for 157 vs Pakistan at Col-SSC in Jul 09.

Sri Lanka lost its first wicket with out a run on the board in this innings providing the 25th occasion of Sri Lanka losing its first wicket with out a run on the board against various oppositions. This is the second such occasion against India, the first being at Kandy in Jul 93.

He wrested the record from A Ranatunga and M Muralitharan who have played 20 tests. India’s total of 417 for 2 represents the most runs scored by India on the first day’s play. It also represents the 34th occasion of teams registering 400 plus runs on the first day’s play in a test match.

G Gambhir scored 114 in the second innings of this test providing the 36th hundred by Indian batsmen against Sri Lanka. It also represents the ninth hundred by an Indian opening batsman against Sri Lanka.

G Gambhir’s 114 represent the 109th hundred by an Indian opening batsman in a test innings against various oppositions. DPMD Jayawardene completed 9000 test runs when he was on 253 during his knock of 275. At the end of the test, his run aggregate stood at 9022. He became the tenth batsman in the world to aggregate 9000 plus runs. SR Tendulkar’s 100 not out in this test represents his eighth hundred in the third innings of a test match which is a record for most hundreds in the third innings by an Indian batsman. The previous record was held by SM Gavaskar who has scored seven hundreds in the third innings of a test match.

SR Tendulkar with his eight test hundreds in the third innings of a test match is on par with MD Crowe of New Zealand and MA Taylor of Australia who have also scored eight hundreds. Only ML Hayden {10} and AR Border {09} have scored most hundreds than SR Tendulkar, MD Crowe and MA Taylor in the third innings of a test match

It is interesting to note that this record were credited to Australasian batsmen – Australia {ML Hayden, AR Border, MA Taylor} and New Zealand {MD Crowe}, till an Indian batsman SR Tendulkkar joined this list.

SR Tendulkar and VVS Laxman added 137 runs in an unfinished stand for the fifth wicket providing the 38th occasion of a three figure partnership posted by Indian batsmen against Sri Lanka. This stand also represents the sixth occasion of a three figure partnership for the fifth posted by Indian batmen against Sri Lanka.

R Dravid and Yuvraj Singh added 125 runs for the first wicket in the first innings and SR Tendulkar and VVS Laxman added 137 runs in an unfinished stand for the fifth wicket in the second innings. The pair wrested the previous best for the sixth wicket which was credited to JH Fingleton and DG Bradman who had added 346 runs in the test match between Australia and England at Melbourne in Jan 1937. Thus “Jayawardene pair” rewrote 72 old record.

DPMD Jayawardene and HAPW Jayawardene added 351 runs for the sixth wicket provides the third occasion of a 300 plus runs partnership for the sixth wicket in the annals of test cricket. The other two occasions are – 346 runs between JH Fingleton and DG Bradman in the test between Australia and England at Melbourne in Jan 1937 and 317 runs between DR Martyn and AC Gilchrist in the test between Australia and South Africa at Johannesburg in Feb 2002

Jayawardene is the second Sri Lankan batsman to aggregate 1000 plus runs in 2009 after TT Samaraweera.

DPMD Jayawardene’s run aggregate against India at the end of the third day stood at 1365. He has now the most runs by a Sri Lankan batsman against India. He wrested the record from PA de Silva who had an aggregate of 1252.

Sri Lanka’s 591 for 5 at the end of the third day of this test provides the fourth occasion of Sri Lanka posting a team total of 500 plus runs against India. The other three occasions are – 952 for 6 declared at Col-RPS in Aug 97, 610 for 6 declared at Col-SSC in Aug 01 and 600 for 6 declared at Col- SSC in Jul 08.

Sri Lanka’s 591 for 5 at the end of the third day of this test provide their highest team total against India in India. The previous best was 420 all out at Kanpur in Dec 86.

Second day’s highlights

KGDT Prasad returned with figures of 22.0-1-106-2 providing the 33rd occasion of a Sri Lankan bowler conceding 100 plus runs in a test innings against India.

M Muralitharan had an aggregate of 298 wickets on away soil and his three wickets in India’s first innings gave him 301 away wickets. He became the second bowler in the world to aggregate 300 wickets on away soil after SK Warne of Australia who has 362 away wickets to his credit.

M Muralitharan had an aggregate of 88 wickets against India prior to the start of the series and his three wickets in India’s first innings gave him 91 Indian wickets, He became the second bowler to capture 90 plus wickets against India, the first bowler being Imran Khan of Pakistan who has an aggregate of 94 wickets to his credit.

At the end of India’s first innings Muralitharan has 91 wickets against India. He has already captured 112 wickets against England and 104 wickets against South Africa. His 91 wickets against India game him the distinction of capturing 90 plus wickets against three specific oppositions. He became the second bowler in the annals of test cricket to capture 90 plus wickets against three or more specific oppositions, after SK Warne of Australia who has captured 90 plus wickets against four specific oppositions viz., vs England {195}, vs New Zealand {103}, vs Pakistan {90} and vs South Africa {130}.

Ishant Sharma was stumped by HAPW Jayawardne of the bowling of M Muralitharan. Ishant Sharma became the 47th stumping victim of M Muralitharan.

TM Dilshan’s 112 represent the 174th hundred by a Sri Lankan batsman in a test innings. His knock also represents 31st hundred by a Sri Lankan batsman against India.

TM Dilshan’s 112 represent his tenth test hundred and he becomes the eighth Sri Lankan batsman to register ten or more test hundreds. Others are DPMD Jayawardene {26}, PA de Silva {20}, KC Sangakkara {20}, MS Atapattu {16}, ST Jayasuriya {14}, HP Tilakatatne {11} and TT Samaraweera {11}

TM Dilshan’s 112 represent the fifth hundred by a Sri Lankan batsman against India on Indian soil. It also represents the highest individual score by a Sri Lankan batsman against India on Indian soil. The previous best was 110 not out by PA de Silva at Mohali in Nov 97

R Dravid pouched one catch on the second day of the test to take his tally of catches against Sri Lanka to ten. He became the third Indian fieldsman to pouch ten or more catches against Sri Lanka. after M Azharuddin {27} and A Kumble {13}.

Zaheer Khan hit two boundary fours in his knock of 12 which gave him 100 boundary fours in his test career.

DPMD Jayawardene with 36 not out at the end of the second day has taken his run aggregate against India to 1197. He needs three more runs for 1200 runs and if he gets it, he would become the second Sri Lankan batsman to aggregate 1200 plus runs against India, the first being PA de Silva {1252}

At the end of the second day of this test, TM Dilshan has aggregated 961 runs in 2009 and requires 39 more runs for 1000 runs in 2009. TT Samaraweera {1128} and AJ Strauss {1071} are the only two batsmen who have an aggregate of 1000 plus runs in 2009

TM Dilshan earned the distinction of becoming the third Sri Lankan batsman to score five or more hundreds in a calendar year. The other two are – PA de Silva {seven hundreds in 1997} and DPMD Jayawardene {five hundreds in 2007}

KC Sangakkara became the seventh Sri Lankan captain to lead Sri Lanka against India, while MS Dhoni became the ninth Indian captain to lead against Sri Lanka

MS Dhoni with his 110 emulated SM Gavaskar and SR Tendulkar who have registered hundreds on their first captaincy assignment against Sri Lanka. SM Gavaskar has scored 155 at Chennai in Sep 82, SR Tendulkar had made 143 at Col-RPS in Aug 97.

MS Dhoni’s 110 represent the 154th hundred scored by a wicket keeper batsman in the annals of test cricket. It also represents the seventh hundred by wicket keeper batsman against Sri Lanka.
