Highlights of the Ranji Trophy match between Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh at Barabati Stadium, Meerut, from 3-6th November 2009.

Karnataka’s victory over Uttar Pradesh on 06.11.2009 is its 158th in 349 matches and its third in five matches against UP. This win is Karnataka’s 62^nd on away soil in 169 matches played outside Karnataka.

Abhimanyu Mithun became the 265th cricketer to make debut for Karnataka. Born on 25.10.1989, Mithun is a right handed batsman and right arm fast medium bowler.

Mithun celebrated his selection by performing the rare feat of capturing ten plus wickets in the match. He took 11 for 181. He captured 5 plus wickets in each innings (6-86 and 5-95). Mithun became only the second Karnataka bolwer to capture ten or more wickets on debut, after GV Kumar, who had taken 13-107 (7-53 and 6-54) against Tamilnadu at Bangalore in 1977/78.

Mithun became the ninth Karnataka bowler to capture five or more wickets in an innings on debut in Ranji Trophy. His twin five fors provide the eleventh occasion of a Karnatka bowler capturing five or more wickets on debut. He is the first Karnataka bowler to achieve the feat against Uttar Pradesh. MG Vijayasarathy was the first bowler from Karnataka to capture five wickets in an innings on debut. He had captured 6 for 23 against Madras at Madras in the inaugural match of the Ranji Trophy in 1934/35.

Just for the record PE Palia, playing his first match for the then Mysore, has also taken 5-73 against Madras at Madras in 1944/45, but he had appeared earlier for other States in Ranji Trophy.

Mithun became the 5th Karnataka player to perform a hat trick when he took the wickets of Amir Khan, Piyush Chawla and R.P. in the 2nd innings with 3rd, 4th and 5th balls of the innings 60th over and his 19th over.

Mithun is the second Karnataka bowler to perform the hat-trick on his debut in Ranji Trophy after J Srinath who had achieved this feat against Hyderabad at Secunderabad in 1989/90.

Anil Kumble has the rare distinction of being the only Karnataka player to perform the hat trick on two occasions in his Ranji Trophy career. He has performed the feat against Andhra at Visakhapatnam in 1991/92 and against Orissa at Rourkela in 1997/98.

A Raghuram Bhat is the first Karnataka bowler to perform the hat trick by achieving the feat against Bombay at Bangalore in 1981/82

The list concludes with Anand Katti who accomplished the feat of hat trick against Kerala at Tellicherry in 1998/99.

By scoring his maiden century – 194 – in his fifth Ranji Trophy match, Manish Pandey missed the distinction of scoring a double hundred by six runs. His previous best was 64 in debut against Railways at Bangalore in 2008-09. Pandey’s 194 in this game represent the 245th century by Karnataka batsmen. He became the 64th Karnataka batsman to score a century in Ranji Trophy

Pandey’s 194 is the third highest score by a Karnataka player against UP after GR Viswanath’s 247 at Mohannagar in 1977/78 and RS Dravid’s 215 at Bangalore in 1997/98.

Pandey is the seventh Karnataka batsman to score a century against Uttar Pradesh after GR Viswanath, BP Patel, RS Dravid, Vijay Bharadwaj, J Arunkumar and B Akhil.

Pandey became the second Karnataka batsman to be dismissed in the 190s. Rahul Dravid is the other batsman. He was dismissed for 191 against Andhra at Bangalore in 1994/95. Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan remains the only batsman to be dismissed in the 190s against Karnataka. He was dismissed for 193 at Bangalore in 2008/09.

Rahul Dravid was captaining Karnataka for the eight occasion in his 45 match tenure for Karnataka in Ranji Trophy. He had led Karnataka against Uttar Pradesh earlier at Bangalore in 1997/98 .

Sunil Joshi, at the end of this game has an aggregate 433 wickets in 102 matches and needs five more wickets to surpass record of most wickets in Ranji Trophy for Karnataka – held by BS Chandrasekhar’ who has an aggregate of 437 wickets

Karnataka has never lost a match under Dravid’s captaincy and the win against Uttar Pradesh is Karnataka’s fifth outright win in eight matches under Dravid’s captaincy.

Dravid’s 97 in the first innings is his second dismissal in the 90s. He had been dismissed for 99 against Hyderabad at Hyderabad in 1997/98.

Dravid’s dismissal in the 90s provides the 48th occasion for Karnataka in which players have either been dismissed or remained not out in the 90s.

Dravid’s 97 in this game represent the sixth occasion of Karnataka captain dismissed in nineties. The others are – V Subramanya (99 vs Bombay at Bangalore, 1963/64), BK Kunderan (92 vs Madras at Bangalore in 1967/68), GR Viswanath (97 vs Bengal at Bangalore in 1978/79), AV Jayaprakash (93 vs Hyderabad at Hyderabad in1983/84) and S Somasundar (97 vs Andhra atVijayawada in 1997/98).

Dravid’s 97 and 51* in this game provides the third occasion in which Dravid has scored twin fifties in a match. The other two occasions – are 105* and 56* against Kerala at Bangalore in 1993/94 and 71 and 149 against Rajasthan at Bangalore in 1999/00.

The 273 runs partnership for the 4th wicket between Rahul Dravid and Manish Pandey in the first innings represents the seventh highest partnership by Karnataka batsmen in Ranji Trophy. The highest partnership is the unfinished 451 runs for the first wicket between Roger Binny and Sanjay Desai against Kerala at Chikkamagalur in 1977/78.

The 273 runs partnership between R Dravid and M Pandey for the fourth wicket is the record fourth wicket partnership against Uttar Pradesh in Ranji Trophy. The previous record for this wicket was 257 runs between Rahul Dravid and Vijay Bharadwaj at Bangalore in 1997/98. The highest for the fourth wicket against any opponent is 281 runs between Rowland Barrington and VS Thilaknaidu against Jammu & Kashmir at Bangalore in 2002/03.

The 273 runs partnership between R Dravid and M Pandey for the fourth wicket represent the 31st occasion of 200 plus runs partnership posted by Kannataka batsmen against various oppositions in the Ranji Trophy.

Mohd Kaif’s duck is his 6th duck as Captain and his first as Captain against Karnataka.
