Mumbai who fought till the end in one of the most exciting finals and won it against Karnataka in a nail biting finish to annex the prestigious Ranji Trophy for the 39th occasion in 76th final of the National Championship – 2009/10 played at the picturesque Gangothri Glades, Mysore.

Karnataka had entered the Ranji trophy final for the 12th occasion. It was their fifth final fixture against Mumbai. Karnataka were runners up for the 6th occasion, The previous five losses were – against Mumbai at Mumbai in 1941/42 (by ininngs and 281 runs), 1959/60 against Mumbai at Mumbai (by innings & 22 runs), 1974/75 against Mumbai at Mumbai (by 7 wkts), 1978/79 against Delhi at Bangalore (by 399 runs), 1981/82 against Delhi at Delhi (on first innings lead)

Mumbai had entered the final for a record 43rd time and their win at Mysore is its 39^th win. Mumbai had finished runners up on four other occasions.

By winning the 2009/10 finals against Karnataka, Mumbai retained the Ranji trophy it had won against Uttar Pradesh in 2008/09. Mumbai repeated the feat of winning it twice in succession for the sixth occasion – it had accomplished such a feat earlier in 1934/35 and 1935/36, 1955/56 and 1956/57, 1983/84 and 1984/85, 1993/94 and 1994/95 and 2002/03 and 2003/04.

Besides this, it had won consecutively three times in 1974/75, 1975/76 and 1976/77. Mumbai holds the record for winning the Ranji Trophy – 15 times in consecutively 1957/58 to 1972/73. Their sixteenth consectiive win was foiled by Karnataka in 1973/74, when Karnatnaka beat them in the Semi finals at Bangalore and went on to win the coveted Tropny for the first time

This is only the fourth occasion that a Ranji Trophy final has been held in Karnataka, The other three finals have been hosted at Bangalore – in 1978/79 against Delhi, 1997/98 against Uttar Pradesh and 1998/99 against Madhya pradesh.

The Ranji Trophy Final at Mysore was the 12th Ranji trophy match played in Mysore and the sixth at the Gangothri Glades

The Ranji Trophy Finals defeat against Mumbai is Karnataka’s first at this ground and the second at Mysore. It has lost to Saurashtra in 2007/08

Mysore became only the third venue to host a Mumbai and Karnataka Ranji Match. All the other matches involving these two teams were either played at Bangalore or at Bombay.

The finals encounter represents the 20^th encounter between Karnataka and Mumbai in Ranji trophy. Karnataka has failed to win a game outright, but were declared winners on the first innnigns lead on four occasions / 1973/74 1974/75, 1981/82 and 1982/83. Mumbai on the other hand, won on 16 occasions – out right on ten occasions and four occasions on first innings lead

Mumbai registered its second lowest team total against Karnataka when it totaled 233 in the first innings at Mysore. Its lowest is 205 at Bangalore in 1981/82

The six runs victory carved by Mumbai at Mysore represents the second narrowest margin of victory in terms of runs in the Finals of the Ranji Trophy. The narrowest margin of win is two runs – Haryana beating Mumbai at Mumbai in 1990/91 This is only the second occasion in 76 Ranji Finals that a team has lost by less than 10 runs.

Manish pandey who scored 144 in the second innings, became the twelfth Karnataka batsman to score a century against Mumbai. Others are / V Subramanya, GR Vishwanath, BP Patel, R Sudhakar Rao, RMH Binny, J Abhiram, CS Saldanha, SMH kirmani, SB Joshi, J Arunkumar and R Dravid.

V Subramanya, GR Vishwanath and BP Patel have the distinction of scoring centuries on two occasions, while R Dravid remains the only batsman to score a double hundred

M Pandey with 882 runs holds the record for most run aggregate in 2009/10 Ranji Trophy season. He went past Mumbai’s AM Rahane’s 809 runs when he was on 72 during his knock of 144 in the second innings of this game.

M Pandey also earned the distinction of completing 1000 runs in Ranji Trophy, He reached the milestone when was on 69 during his second innings knock of 144. At the end of the match, he has an aggregate of 1075 runs from 14 matches and 22 innings. He has an average of 51.19 runs per innings and has scored four centuries and six half centuries

M Pandey became the 40th Karnataka batsman to aggregate 1000 plus runs in Ranji Trophy. Brijesh Patel leads the table with 7126 runs from 104 Matches. AS Krishna Swamy was the first Karnataka player to aggregate 1000 runs in Ranji Trophy.

M Pandey has the distinction of scoring most hundreds in the Ranji Trophy season. He has scored four hundreds – 194 vs Uttar Pradesh at Meerut, 110 vs Baroda at Vadodara, 115 vs Punjab at Mysore and 144 vs Mumbai at Mysore

A Mithun (47} and R Vinay Kumar {46} occupy the first and second position in the list of most wicket takers in 2009/10 season. A Mithun’s tally has come from nine matches, while R Vinay Kumar’s aggregate came from eight matches.

A Mithun registered his best innings bowling effort in this game when he returned with figures of 6 for 71. His previous best was 6 for 86 against Uttar Pradesh at Meerut on his Ranji debut
