The other four occasions are – 236 runs for the first wicket in first innings between AC Hudson and G Kirsten at Kolkata in Nov 1996, 212 runs for the second wicket in second innings between G Kirsten and DJ Cullinan at Kolkata in Nov 1996, 256 runs for the fifth wicket in first innings at Ahmedabad in Apr 2008 and 340 runs for the third wicket in the first innings at Nagpur in Feb 2010

AN Petersen with his 100 in this test became the 28th opening batsman in the annals of test cricket to score a hundred on debut. He is the third opening batsman to achieve the feat against India. The other two are – CG Greenidge of West Indies {107 in the second innings at Bangalore in Nov 1974} and AN Cook of England {104* at Nagpur in Mar 2006}.

Zaheer Khan captured 4 for 90 in the first innings of this test providing the second occasion of his capturing four wickets in a test innings against South Africa. The other occasion was his 4 for 62 in second innings at Cape Town in Jan 2007.

G Gambhir dismissal run out in this innings for 25 provides the 26th occasion of an opening batsman dismissed run out against South Africa in a test innings. He is the third Indian opening batsman dismissed run out in a test innings against South Africa. The other two are – NR Mongia for 35 in India’s first innings at Kolkata in Nov 1996 and WV Raman for 05 in India’s first innings at Cape Town in Jan 1997.

G Gambhir’s run out dismissal in the first innings of this test provide the 49th occasion of Indian opening batsman dismissed run out in a test innings against various oppositions.

V Sehwag with his century in the first innings of this test registered his fourth hundred as an opening batsman against South Africa. The other three are – 164 at Kanpur in Nov 2004, 319 at Chennai in Mar 2008 and 109 at Nagpur in Feb 2010

V Sehwag is the fourth opening batsman to score four or more hundreds against South Africa. The other three are – ML Hayden of Australia {06}, H Sutcliffe of England {06} and L Hutton of England {04}

V Sehwag and SR Tendulkar added 249 runs the third wicket in this game providing the sixth occasion of a 200 plus runs partnership by Indian batsmen against South Africa. The other five occasions are – 222 runs for the sixth wicket between SR Tendulkar and M Azharuddin at Cape Town in Jan 1997, 220 runs for the fifth wicket between V Sehwag and SR Tendulkar at Bloemfontein in Nov 2001, 218 runs for the first wicket between G Gambhir and V Sehwag at Kanpur in Nov 2004, 213 runs for the first wicket between Wasim Jaffer and V Sehwag at Chennai in Mar 2009 and 268 runs for the third wicket between V Sehwag and R Dravid at Chennai in Mar 2008

It is interesting to note that V Sehwag is one of the partners in five 200 plus runs partnerships of the six mentioned above.

The previous best was 84 runs stand between SC Ganguy and R Dravid at Cape Town in Jan 2007. With his 165 runs in this test, – his 13th score of 150 plus runs, V Sehwag holds the record for most scores of 150 plus runs as an opening batsman. SM Gavaskar {11} and L Hutton {10} are the other two opening batsmen who have scored ten or more 150 plus runs

SR Tendulkar scored his 47th test hundred when he scored 106 in this test, while V Sehwag registered his 19th hundred when he scored 165.

VVS Laxman completed 7000 runs when he was on 7 during the course of his knock of 9 not out and at the end of the second day his run aggregate stood at 7002. He was playing his 50th test on home soil.

V Sehwag completed 1000 runs against South Africa when he was on three during his knock of 165. At the end of India’s first innings of this test, his aggregate stood at 1162. He became the third Indian batsman to aggregate 1000 plus runs against South Africa. The other two are SR Tendulkar {1415} and R Dravid {1162}.

V Sehwag became the 26th batsman to aggregate 1000 plus runs against South Africa in the annals of test cricket.

At the end of India’s first innings, SR Tendulkar and V Sehwag share the Indian record for most hundreds against South Africa. Both the batsmen have scored five hundreds.

V Sehwag became the only opening batsman in the annals of test cricket to register 150 plus runs in a test innings against South Africa on three occasions. The other opening batsmen who have scored 150 plus runs on two occasions against South Africa are – JB Hobbs of England {187 at Cape Town in Mar 1910 and 211 at Lord’s in Jun 1924}, MA Taylor of Australia {170 at Melbourne in Dec 1993 and 169* at Adelaide in Jan 1998} and ME Trescothick of England {219 at The Oval in Sep 2003 and 180 at Jo’burg in Jan 2005}

V Sehwag with his scores of 150 plus runs on three occasions against South Africa earned the distinction of becoming the seventh batsman in the annals of test cricket to register three or more innings of 150 plus runs against South Africa. Others are – RN Harvey of Australia {04}, DG Bradman of Australia {03}, DCS Compton of England {03}, WJ Edrich of England {03}, DPMD Jayawardene of Sri Lanka {03} and BC Lara of West Indies {03}.

South African innings contained 209 runs partnership between AN Petersen and HM Amla for the second wicket. Indian innings contained a 249 runs partnership for the third wicket between V Sehwag and SR Tendulkar. Thus rival batsmen posted 200 plus runs partnerships in this test providing the 28th such instance in the annals of test cricket.
