V Sewag registered his 18th test hundred when he made 109 in the first innings of this test. SR Tendulkar {45}, SM Gavaskar {34}, R Dravid {29} and M Azharuddin {22} are the four Indian batsmen who have score more hundreds than V Sehwag.

V Sehwag’s 109 in this test represent the 386th occasion of an Indian batsman registering a hundred in a test innings.

V Sehwag with is four hundreds against South Africa shares the record for most hundreds by an Indian batsman against South Africa with Mohd Azharuddin who also has scored four hundreds – 109 at Kolkata in Nov 1996, 163* at Kolkata in Dec 1996, 115 at Cape Town in Jan 1997 and 102 at Bangalore in Mar 2000.

V Sehwag’s 109 in this innings represent his 17th hundred as an opening batsman. SM Gavaskar is the other Indian batsman with 33 hundreds to his credit has scored more hundreds than V Sehwag as an opening batsman

S Badrinath registered a half century – 56 – on debut in this test. He became the 23rd Indian bastman to register a half century on debut. He also became the 34th Indian batsman to score a fifty on test debut

He became the fourth Indian batsman to register a fifty on test debut against South Africa. Others are PK Amre {103 in the first innings at Durban in Nov 1992}, VVS Laxman {51 in the second innings at Ahmedabad in Nov 1996} and V Sehwag {105 in the first innings at Bloemfontein in Nov 2001}.

It is a strange coincidence that V Sehwag and S Badrinath, the two batsmen who have scored fifty on test debut against South Africa forged a three figure partnership of 136 for the fourth wicket in the first innings of this test.

He became the third South African bowler to achieve the feat against India. The other two are – AA Donald {7 for 84 at Port Elizabeth in Dec 1992} and L Klusener {8 for 64 at Kolkota in Nov 1996}

DW Steyn’s 7 for 51 in this test represent his 13th five wicket haul and his best innings bowling effort. His previous best was 6 for 49 against New Zealand at Centurion in Nov 2007. His previous best against India was 5 for 23 at Ahmedabad in Apr 2008.

The following South African bowlers have captured five or more wickets in a test innings on ten or more occasions – AA Donald {20}, M Ntini {18}, SM Pollock {16}, HJ Tayfield {14} and DW Steyn {13}.

WP Saha scored zero on his test debut providing the 47th occasion of an Indian batsman scoring a zero on his debut {in either of the two innings or in both innings}. WP Saha is the first Indian batsman to score a zero on his debut against South Africa.
