SECOND EDTION OF IPL HELD IN SOUTH AFRICA
The tournament was shifted to South Africa as Indian Government refused to provide Security for the cricketers participating in the League in view of the General Elections in the country.
The finalists of 2009 edition – Royal Challengers, Bangalore and Deccan Chargers had finished at number seven and eight in the previous edition of Indian Premier League 2008. Deccan Chargers won the IPL 2009 by beating Royal Challengers, Bangalore by six runs at Johannesburg on 24.05.09
TEAM RECORDS
26 matches were won by runs margin, 30 games were won by wickets margin, two games were abandoned due to rain and were considered as no result games and one game was tied which was decided on one over eliminator.
Five games were won by 75 plus runs margin and six games were won by single digit runs margin. One game was won by without losing a wicket and two games were won by nine wickets margin
Jaipur’s 211 for 4 against Mohali at Durban on 05.05.09 was the highest team total recorded by a team batting first, while Chennai’s 188 for 3 against Kolkata at Centurion on 18.05.09 remained the highest total by a team batting second.
There were two occasions of both the teams scoring 175 plus runs, the details of which are furnished below

On 22 occasions, when a team had won the toss and elected to bat first had won the game, on 15 occasions when a team had won the toss and elected to bat first had lost the game. On 12 occasions when the team had won the toss but elected to field first, had won the game. On eight occasions, when the team has won the toss but elected to filed first had lost the game. Two games were abandoned.
Jaipur had the distinction of scoring the highest team total and also the lowest team total in a completed innings in the second edition of IPL
MAN OF THE MATCH AWARDS
Delhi bagged the most Man of the Match Awards – Ten and was followed by Bangalore which bagged nine awards. Chennai {08}, Hyderabad {08}, Mohali {08}, Jaipur {06}, Mumbai {05} and Kolkata {03} were the other teams which have bagged the MoM Awards.
YK Pathan of Jaipur bagged the most MoM awards- three. As many as ten captains bagged the MoM awards and six wicket keepers bagged MoM awards. There were three occasions when captain-cum-wicket keepers bagged the MoM awards. Yuvraj Singh and A Kumble were the two cricketers to bag MoM award when their team lost the game
BATTING RECORDS
IPL Second edition witnessed as many as 69 fifties scored by batsmen. There were 14 occasions of batsmen scoring fifties while batting at number one and 18 occasions of batsmen scoring fifties while batting at number two.
The break up of 69 fifites team wise read thus – Bangalore {08}, Chennai {10}, Delhi {11}, Hyderabad {09}, Jaipur {05}, Kolkata {06}, Mohali {07} and Mumbai {13}. Mumbai batsmen scored most fifties {13} in the tournament.

As many as 30 occasions of unbeaten fifties were scored in IPL second edition. There were eleven occasion of opening batsmen scoring unbeaten fifties

Second edition of IPL witnessed 25 occasions of batsmen’s fifties going in vain. There were three of occasion of two batsmen’s fifties going in vain.

IPL Second edition witnessed 94 occasions of batsman scoring zeroes, ten occasions of captains scoring zeroes and eight occasions of wicket keeper batsmen scoring zeroes. As many as seven batsmen scored zeroes without facing a delivery, while 42 batsmen collected the first ball duck.

JH Kallis scored 62 runs against Mohali at Durban on 24.04.09 with the willow and returned with figures of 4.0-0-51-1 providing the lone occasion of a cricketer scoring fifty runs and conceding 50 runs in the second edition of IPL
Moshrafe Mortaza of Kolkata {none for 58} against Hyderabad at Johannesburg on 16.05.09 and A Flintoff of Chennai {none for 50} against Delhi at Durban on 23.04.09 are the two bowlers who conceded 50 plus runs without capturing a wicket in the second edition of IPL.

ML Hayden of Chennai {60} and AC Gilchrist of Hyderabad {54} are the two batsmen who have scored 50 plus boundary fours in the tournament. ML Hayden has the record of scoring most boundary fours in the tournament
AC Gilchrist of Hyderabad {29}, ML Hayden of Chennai {22} and SK Raina of Chennai {21} are the three batsmen who have scored 20 or more sixes in the second edition of IPL. AC Gilchrist of Hyderabad has the distinction of scoring most sixes {29} in the tournament.
HAT TRICKS AND YUVRAJ SINGH’S FEAT
Yuvraj Singh after performing the Hattrick against Bangalore at Durban on 01.05.09 scored half century {50}. He is the only cricketer to perform hat trick coupled with a half century. With the Hat trick against Hyderabad at Johannesbur on 17.05.08, Yuvraj Singh is the only bowler to perform the feat on two occasions in T20 games. He was leading Mohali while he performed this feat makes him the only captain to achieve Hat trick on two occasions in T20 games

Hyderabad has the distinction of scoring most sixes {99} and also conceding most sixes {79} in the second edition of the tournament

AC Gilchrist of Hyderabad has scored most sixes, while SK Warne of Jaipur and Praveen Kumar of Bangalore have conceded most sixes – 14 each.
