Second Test between England and Bangladesh at Manchester : England won by an innings and 80 runs

England capped A Shahzad for this test. He became the 650th cricketer to represent England in tests. He became the 63rd England cricketer to make his test debut at Manchester. ME Trescothick was the last England cricketer to be capped at Manchester. He had made his test debut against West Indies in Aug 2000 – exact ten seasons ago. A Shahzad is the eighth England cricketer to be capped against Bangladesh. He is the second England cricketer to make his test debut against Bangladesh on home soil after EJG Morgan who had made his debut in the first test at Lord’s in the ongoing test series.

KP Pietersen was dismissed stumped in the first innings of this test for 64. It is the second occasion of his being dismissed stumped in a test innings. The other occasion was in England second innings against Pakistan at Lord’s in Jul 2006. He was stumped by Kamran Akmal of Shahid Afridi for 41

KP Pietersen became the fourth England batsman to be dismissed stumped in a test innings against Bangladesh. The others are – ME Trescothick for 32 at Dhaka in Oct 2003, TT Bresnan for 91 at Dhaka in Mar 2010 and JC Tredwell for 37 at Dhaka in Mar 2010.

KP Pietersen’s dismissal stumped for 64 provide the 63rd occasion of an England batsman dismissed stumped in a test innings after scoring fifty against various oppositions.

At the end of the first innings, IR Bell has an aggregate of 633 runs against Bangaldesh. His aggregate represent most runs by an England batsman against Bangladesh. He wrested the record from ME Trescothick who had a total of 551 runs.

Both IR Bell and ME Trescothick has an aggregate of 69 boundary fours against Bangladesh at the end of the first day’s play and at the end of the first innings, IR Bell had scored 72 boundary fours thus owning the record for most boundary fours against Bangladesh

KP Pietersen’s 64 represent his 19th half century and 35th fifty. IR Bell’s 87 not out in this game which came in his 100th test innings represents his 24th half century and 34th fifty.

KP Pietersen has an aggregate of 605 boundary fours at the end of England’s first innings. He became the 15th England batsman to score 600 boundary fours.

KP Pietersen’s lone six in his knock of 64 gave him an aggregate of 53 sixes. He is the third England batsman to score fifty plus sixes. Others are – A Flintoff {78} and IT Botham {53}. KP Pietersen is one of the 24 batsmen in the annals of test cricket who have scored 50 plus sixes.

MJ Prior’s 93 in this game provide the eleventh occasion of an England wicket keeper batsman scoring a ninety in a test innings against various oppositions.

MJ Prior became the fourth batsman to score ninety in a test innings against Bangladesh. Others are – N Hussain {95 at Chittagong in Oct 2003}, KP Pietersen {99 at Chittagong in Mar 2010}, TT Bresnan {91 at Dhaka in Mar 2010}.

Thus MJ Prior became the first England batsman and also the first wicketkeeper batsman to score a ninety on home soil. This is the first occasion that MJ Prior has been dismissed in nineties in his test career spanning 31 tests and 49 innings.

IR Bell’s 128 in this game represent his third hundred against Bangladesh. The other two hundreds are – 162 not out at Chester-le-Street in Jun 05 and 138 at Dhaka in Mar 2010. IR Bell and ME Trescothick share the record of most hundreds by England batsman against Bangladesh. Both batsmen have scored three hundreds each. ME Tresocothick’s hundreds read thus – 113 at Dhaka in Oct 2003, 194 at Lord’s in May 2005 and 151 at Chester-le-Street in Jun 2005

IR Bell’s 128 in this test came in his 100th test innings. He has scored eleven test hundreds including his 128 in this test. By a statistical coincidence, IR Bell’s hundred also represent the eleventh hundred by an England batsman against Bangladesh. IR Bell’s knock represents the first hundred by an England batsman against Bangladesh in a Manchester test.

IR Bell’s 128 in this test represent the 64th hundred by an England batsman in a test innings at Manchester. His knock in this test is the second hundred at Manchester, the first being his 128 vs Pakistan in Jul 2006. He is the 15th England batsman to score two or more hundreds in a test at Manchester, DCS Compton and AJ Stewart are the only two batsmen to score three hundreds. MA Atherton, IR Bell, IT Botham, AN Cook, GA Gooch, L Hutton, Hon FS Jackson, AJ Lamb, PBH May, RA Smith, AJ Strauss, GP Thorpe and MP Vaughan are the other thirteen batsmen who have scored two test hundreds at Manchester.

Shakib Ali Hasan captured five for 121 in this test providing the 25th occasion of a Bangladesh bowler capturing five or more wickets in a test innings against England and he is the first Bangladesh bowler to capture five wickets in an innings in a test at Manchester.

Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes added 126 runs for the first wicket providing the 34th occasion of Bangladesh batsmen posting a three figure partnership in a test innings against various oppositions, This stand also represents the fourth occasion of a first wicket partnership of 100 plus runs against various oppositions. The four occasions are – 133 runs between Javed Omar and Nafees Iqbal vs Zimbabwe at Dhaka in Jan 2005, 261 runs between Junaid Siddique and Tamim Iqbal v New Zealand at Dunedin in Jan 2008, 185 runs between Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes vs England at Lard’s in May 2010 and 126 runs between Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes vs England at Manchester in Jun 2010.

This stand represents the sixth occasion of a three figure partnership by Bangladesh batsmen against England and the second occasion for the first wicket. The two occasions are – 185 runs between Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes vs England at Lard’s in May 2010 and 126 runs between Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes vs England at Manchester in Jun 2010.

Tamim Iqbal’s 108 in this test provide the 22nd occasion of a Bangladesh batsman scoring a hundred in a test innings against various oppositions. His knock represents the fourth hundred of his test career which read thus – 128 vs West Indies at Kingstown in Jul 2009, 151 vs India at Dhaka in Jan 2010, 103 vs England at Lord’s in May 2010 and 108 vs England at Manchester in Jun 2010.

Tamim Iqbal became the second Bangladesh batsman to score four or more hundreds. GP Swann captured five for 76 in this test providing the eighth occasion of an England bowler capturing five or more wickets in a test innings against Bangladesh.

GP Swann’s 5 for 76 in this test provides the third occasion of his capturing five or more wickets against Bangladesh. The other two occasions are – 5 for 90 at Chittagong in Mar 2010 and 5 for 127 at Chittagong in Mar 2010. Now he has the record for most five wicket hauls in an innings by an England bowler against Bangladesh. He wrested the record form SM Harmison who had two five fors in an innings.

ST Finn captured 5 for 42 in the second innings to provide the ninth occasion of an England bowler capturing five or more wickets in an innings against Bangladesh. It was his second five wickets innings haul against Bangladesh, the first being his 5 for 87 at Lord’s in May 2010. Thus Finn’s 5 for 42 in this test represent his best innings bowling effort of his test career

ST Finn with two five wickets innings hauls became the third England bowler to capture five or more wickets in an innings on two or more occasions. Others are – GP Swann {on three occasions} and SJ Harmison {on two occasions}

England’s win in this game provides its eighth test win against Bangladesh. Its innings win in this test represents the third occasion of such a win – The three occasions are – by innings and 261 runs at Lord’s in May 2005, by an innings and 27 runs at Chester-le-Street in Jun 2005 and by an innings and 80 runs at Manchester in Jun 2010.

Bangladesh has lost 59 tests so far since its inception. It has lost 34 tests by an innings margin including this test which they lost by an innings and 80 runs
