West Indies capped NT Pascal and S Shillingford for this test. They became the 284th and 285th cricketers to represent West Indies in test cricket. AB de Villiers was playing his 100th test innings in this test and he celebrated the occasion by scoring 68 and also sharing a 122 runs partnership for the sixth wicket in the company of AG Prince

DW Steyn was playing his 50th test innings and celebrated the occasion by completing 500 runs of his test career {516} and also sharing 84 runs partnership for the eighth wicket with MV Boucher

SJ Benn returned with figures of 5 for 120 providing the 29th occasion of a West Indian bowler capturing five or more wickets conceding 100 plus runs. It is the second such occasion for SJ Benn, the first being against Australia at Adelaide in Dec 2009.

S Shillingford collected the first ball duck in West Indies’s first innings providing the 87th occasion of a batsman suffering such an ignominy in the annals of test cricket. He is the 13th West Indian batsman to collect the first ball duck on debut against various opposition and the second West Indian batsman to suffer such an ignominy against South Africa, the first being LV Garick who collected the first ball duck at Kingston in Apr 2001

S Shillingford is the eighth batsman to collect the first ball duck on debut against South Africa. GC Smith took his aggregate of runs as captain to 6306 at the end of this test. AR Border {6623} and RT Ponting {6107} are the other two captains who have scored 6000 plus runs in the annals of test cricket

SJ Benn returned with match figures of 8 for 194 in this test to provide the fourth occasion of a West Indian bowler capturing eight wickets in a test against South Africa. The other three occasions are – CEL Ambrose {8 for 79 ay Port Elizabth in Dec 1992}, CEL Ambrose {8 for 81 at Bridgetown in Apr 1992} and CA Walsh {8 for 108 at Port of Spain in Mar 2001}

MV Boucher’s aggregate of dismissals at the end of this test stood at 498 {476 catches and 22 stumpings}. He requires two more dismissals to effect 500 dismissals to become the first wicket keeper in the annals of test cricket to achieve the milestone

DW Steyn returned with figures of 8 for 94 in this test which represent his best match bowling figures against West Indies. The other occasion of his capturing eight wickets in a test against West Indies was – 8 for 104 at Cape Town in Jan 2008.
