Mysore Mahaarajas who batted first, after winning the toss put up a decent total of 164 for 7 in its 20 overs. It was so near but yet not so far for Malnad Gladiators. Victors and the vanquished were separated by two runs.

Chasing a total of 136 set by Mangalore United fell short of the target by two runs in a thrilling finish. It was a heart breaking loss for Gladiators. Sanjay Kumar and N Hegde’s last over fireworks was not enough for Gladiators. They required 25 runs for a win of the last over. Sanjay Kumar deposited the first two deliveries over the boundary ropes of the first two deliveries and was caught in the deep when he repeated the stroke of the third delivery. N Hegde scored two and four of the next two deliveries. Of the last ball he hit a boundary when seven were neeed for a win and six for a tie. The last ball four handed a defeat by two runs.

Put into bat Mangalore United lost its two wickets with a single digit on the board, but its innings was propped up by a 49 runs stand for the third wicket between Nidhuvan Kumar and R Jonathan. 35 runs partnership between V Chavan and AF Pasha for the seventh wicket boosted Mangalore United’s total to 135. Mangalore United became the first team to be dismissed all out in this edition of KPL

Nidhvan Kumar {24}, R Jonathan {28}, V Chavan {29} and AF Pasha {27} were the four batsmen who reached double figures and their contribution was the mainstay of Mangalore’s innings. RR Bhatkal picked up 3 for 21 for Gladiators and was well supported by K Gowtham who had figures of 2 for 27

Slow and sedate batting display cost Gladiators this match. Thus Dhananjaya became the most expensive bowler in the tournament in terms of runs conceded.

Belgavi Panthers undeterred by the huge total started in a confident note, with their inform openers – skipper J Arun Kumar and KS Ponnappa – adding 70 runs for the first wicket in 7.1 overs. KS Ponnappa left at 70 and J Arun Kumar followed him at 112. As long the skipper was at the crease, Panthers had a chance to wrap up the game. His departure at a crucial stage gave an advantage to Diamonds. Panthers lost wickets at regular intervals. Due to prevailing unavoidable circumstances, in consultation with all the associates of the Mantri KPL 2010, decided to cancel the matches scheduled at Hubli from 25th to 27th September 2010.

Now all the remaining matches will be played at M.Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore. There will be no matches played on 24th and 25th September 2010.

Match No 14: Bangalore Provident {Rural} vs Mangalore United at Bangalore on 22.09.10: Mangalore United won by eight wickets

Opting to bat first, Brigadiers lost their inform opener MK Manjunath to the fifth ball of the match for zero and with the score board reading 14, the other opener VST Naidu also departed. MK Manjunath and VST Naidu scored zero and 11 respectively. Brigadiers never recovered from this shock and could muster 140 for 8. Amit Verma {30}, SK Jain {30} and AA Joshi {37} excelled with the willow. Amit Verma and SK Jain stitched a partnership of 63 runs for the third wicket which was the mainstay of Brigadiers’s innings. Barring this stand Brigadiers’ batsmen could not forge useful stands as it lost wickets at fairly regular intervals.

Amit Verma’s 30 came of 30 balls with three fours, SK Jain’s 30 came in 31 balls and contained three fours and AA Joshi’s 37 came in 20 balls with one four and three sixes.

S Aravind {2 for 20} and Aleem {2 for 18} were the main wiceket takers for Mangalore United.

Chasing 141 for a win, Mangalore United openers KK Nair and B Chipli put on fifty runs partnership for the first wicket which was followed by another two useful stands – 41 runs for the second wicket between B Chipli and R Jonathan and 37 runs for the unfinished third wicket between R Jonathan and K Rao

B Chipli, at last, found runs coming his way. A good opening batsman, who represented the state in Ranji Trophy, struggled for runs in the earlier matches. He was very aggressive as the stats of his innings suggest – his 75 came in 53 minutes and occupied the crease for 54 minutes. He hit five boundaries and six sixes.

His six sixes gave him the record of becoming the first batsman in this edition of Mantri-KPL to score five or more sixes in an innings. He wrested the record from MA Agarwal of Diamonds who had hit four sixes against Gladiators at Bangalore on 17.09.10.

B Chipli with his six sixes in this game shared the record of most sixes in an innings with three other batsmen in the tournament. SV Lazarus of Brigadiers had hit six sixes against Provident at Banglaore on 13.09.09, KS Ponnappa of Panthers had hit six sixes against Mangalore at Bangalore on 14.09.09 and J Arun Kumar of Panthers had hit six sixes against Bulls on 16.09.09

B Chipli’s 75 represent the highest score by a batsman in this edition of KPL. He wrested the record from VST Naidu of Provident who had scored 65 not out against Brigadiers at Bangalore on 19.09.10

R Jonathan was the other batsman who was amongst runs. He scored 26 not out in in 18 balls which contained four fours. He was at the crease for 27 minutes. NC Aiyappa {1 for 39} and Amit Verma {1 for 16} accounted for the two wickets that fell in Provident’s innings.
