GC Smith and AN Petersen added 111 runs for the first wicket. HM Amla and JH Kallis added 230 runs for the third wicket and JH Kallis and AB de Villiers added 224 runs for the fourth wicket in South Africa’s first innings providing the second occasion of South African batsmen posting three century partnerships in an innings against India. The first such occasion was witnessed at Bloemfontein in Nov 2001. In this test, in South Africa’s first innings the first wicket realized 189 runs between G Kirsten and HH Gibbs, 130 runs were added for the third wicket between JH Kallis and ND McKenzie and 121 runs were added for the seventh wicket between L Klusener and MV Boucher.

The other occasion was against West Indies at St John’s in Apr 2005. In this test, GC Smith and AB de Villiers added 245 runs for the first wicket and JH Kallis and AG Prince added 267 runs for the seventh wicket.

JH Kallis’s 201 not out in this test represent the 24th double hundred scored by a South African batsman in a test innings.

JH Kallis with his 201 not out in this test became the third batsman to score a double hundred against India. The other two batsmen are – AB de Villiers – 217 not out at Ahmedabad in Apr 2008 and HM Amla – 253 not out at Nagpur in Feb 2010.

JH Kallis’s 201 not out represent the 43rd double hundred scored by batsmen of various teams against India.

JH Kallis’s 201 not out in this test represents his maiden test double hundred. His previous best was 189 not out against Zimbabwe at Bulawayo in Sep 2001.

AB de Villier’s scored hundred – 119 runs – before Lunch on the third day of this test. His feat provides the 16th occasion of a batsman scoring a hundred before Lunch on the other days of the test match. He became the first South African batsman to earn the distinction.

AB de Villiers scored 100 of his 129 in 75 balls providing the eleventh occasion of a batsman scoring the first hundred of their innings in 76 or less than 76 deliveries in the annals of test cricket {where number of balls are known} He is the first South African batsman to perform the feat and thus holds the record for fastest test hundred by a South African in terms of balls faced.

AB de Villiers’s 129 in this test represents his 12th test hundred and 35th fifty.

JD Unadkat returned with figures of none for 101 in this test providing the 19th occasion of a bowler conceding 100 plus runs without a wicket on his debut. He is the third Indian bowler to suffer such an ignominy. The other two bowlers are – none for 132 by RG Nadkarni vs New Zealand at Delhi in Dec 1955 and none for 105 by S Guha vs England at Leeds in Jun 1967.

JH Kallis’s 201 not out in this test provide the seventh occasion of a South African batsman scoring a double hundred against various oppositions in South Africa. The other six occasions are – 231 by AD Nourse vs Australia at Jo’burg in Dec 1935 : 209 by RG Pollock vs Australia at Cape Town in Dec 1966 : 274 by RG Pollock vs Australia at Durban in Feb 1979 : 275 by G Kirsten vs England at Durban in Dec 1999 : 200 by GC Smith vs Bangladesh at
East London in Oct 2002 and 228 by HH Gibbs vs Pakistan at Cape Town in Jan 2003

JH Kallis’s 201 not out in this test represent the highest individual score by a South African batsman against India in South Africa. It also represents the first double hundred by a South African batsman against India in South Africa. The previous best was 196 by HH Gibbs at Port Elizabeth in Nov 2001.

GC Smith {61}, AN Petersen {77}, HM Amla {140}, JH Kallis {201*} and AB de Villers {129} scored fifties in South Africa’s innings providing the 19th occasion of first five batsman scoring fifties in an innings in the annals of test cricket. South Africa posted 620 for 4 declared in this test providing the tenth occasion of South Africa posting a team total of 600 plus runs. It is the first occasion of South Africa posting 600 plus runs against India. Its previous best was 563 all out at Bloemfontein in Nov 2001.

I Sharma {2 for 120}, JD Unadkat {101} and Harbhajan Singh {169} conceded 100 plus runs in India’s innings providing the 27th, 28th and 29th occasion of Indian bowlers conceding 100 plus runs in an innings against South Africa.

Harbhajan Singh conceded 169 runs in India’s innings providing the 41st occasion of his conceding 100 plus runs in an innings. He now stands third in the list of bowlers who have conceded 100 plus runs on most occasions. M Muralitharan {61} and A Kumble {57} occupy the first two places in the list

G Gambhir and V Sehwag added 137 runs for the first wicket in the second innings providing the 18th occasion of Indian batsmen posting a three figure partnership against South Africa. This stand provides the fourth occasion of a three figure partnership for the first wicket by Indian batsmen against South Africa. Other three occasions are – 218 between G Gambhir and V Sehwag at Kanpur in Nov 2004 : 153 runs between W Jaffer and KD Karthik at Cape Town in Jan 2007 and 213 between W Jaffer and V Sehwag at Chennai in Mar 2008.

G Gambhir {80} and V Sehwag {63} scored fifties in India’s second innings providing the fourth occasion of both the Indian opening batsmen scoring fifties in the same innings against South Africa. The other three occasions are – V Sehwag {164} and G Gambhir {96} in India’s first innings at Kanpur in Nov 2004: W Jaffer {116} and KD Karthik {63} in India’s first innings at Cape Town in Jan 2007 and W Jaffer {73} and V Sehwag {319} in first innings at Chennai in Mar 2008.

V Sehwag’s 80 in this test represent his 27th test half century and 49th fifty. G Gambhir’s 80 in this test represent his 14th test half century and his 23rd fifty.

V Sehwag and G Gambhir added 137 runs for the first wicket providing the tenth occasion of the three figure partnership between them. Now they are on par with SM Gavaskar and CPS Chauhan’s ten opening century partnerships which is an Indian record for opening stands.

V Sehwag and G Gambhir at the end of the test have 3505 partnership runs to their credit. They now become the seventh pair to have 3500 plus partnership runs. Other six pairs are – CG Greenidge and DL Haynes of West Indies {6482} : ML Hayden and JL Langer of Australia {5655} : MS Atapattu and ST Jayasuriya of Sri Lanka {4469} : MJ Slater and MA Taylor of Australia {3887} : WM Lawry and RB Simpson of Australia {3596} and AN Cook and AJ Strauss of England {3519}.

V Sehwag and G Gambhir at the end of the test have 3505 partnership runs to their credit. They now become the first Indian pair to have 3500 plus partnership runs.

JH Kallis partnered two century partnerships in this test – 230 runs for the third wicket with HM Amla and 224 runs for the fourth wicket with AB de Villiers. These two partnerships gave JH Kallis 61 three figure partnerships. He became the eighth batsman in the annals of test cricket to have 60 plus three figure partnerships. Other seven batsmen are – R Dravid {85} : RT Ponting {80} : SR Tendulkar {80} ; SR Waugh {64} : AR Border {63} : BC Lara {62} and DPMD Jayawardene {60}
