England vs South Africa

Andrew Hall’s five for 18 is his maiden five wicket haul and he is the second bowler to capture five wickets against England in ODIs after SM Pollock’s 5 for 20 at Johannesburg on 13.02.00. Hall’s figures of 5 for 18 is the best among the bowlers who have taken exact five wickets for South Africa in ODIs. G Cosier of Australia is another bowler to have the figures of 5 for 18 against England.

Andrew Hall becomes the fifth South African bowler to capture five wickets in the World Cup. The other four are L Klusener {vs Kenya in 1999}, SM Pollock {vs Aus in 1999}, CK Langveldt {vs Srl in 2007} and A Nel {vs Ban in 2007}. Andrew Hall is the third bowler to capture five wickets in this edition and interestingly all the three bowlers are South African bowlers.

Hall’s figures of 5 for 18 is the best bowling figures by a South African bowler in the World Cup obliterating L Klusener’s 5 for 21 against Kenya on 26.05.99

England’s 154 all out 48.0 overs in this game provide the 15th instance of a side all out batting first in the current edition and as far as England is concerned it is the second occasion. The first occasion was against New Zealand when England were all out for 247 in 49.5 overs.

England’s 154 all out in this game provide the 14th instance that they have been all out in the World Cup. There are four more occasions when they have been dismissed for a total under 154.

Smith registers his fifth fifty – 89 not out – in this tournament and emulates Scott Styris of New Zealand who also has score five fifties. Smith’s fifty in this game is also his fifth fifty as captain which is most by a captain in this edition. Other captains to score four fifties are Rickey Ponting. Smith becomes the fourth batsman to aggregate 400 runs in the current edition. At the end of the game he has an aggregate of 441 runs. Other three are ML Hayden {477} JH Kallis [480} SB Styris {435} and RT Ponting {430}. JH Kallis now leads the aggregate runs in this edition with 480 runs to his credit.

Smith now has the record for most boundary fours in this edition – 55 and he wrested the record from ML Hayden who has scored 52 boundaries. Smith and Hayden are the only two batsmen who have registered 50 plus boundary fours in this edition.

JH Kallis has aggregated 9000 runs in ODIs and is the first South African batsman to reach the landmark. He joins the elite list of SR Tendulkar, ST Jayasuriya, Inzamam-ul-Huq, SC Ganguly, BC Lara, RT Ponting, RS Dravid, Azharuddin and PA de Silva to become the tenth batsman to score 9000 runs in ODIs

Smith 441 run aggregate as captain in this edition makes him the fourth captain to aggregate 400 plus runs in a single edition. It is the fifth instance that a captain has aggregated 400 plus runs in a single edition. Others are SC Ganguly {465 in 2003},MD Crowe {456 in 1992} and RT Ponting {415 in 2003 and 414 in 2007}.

Ireland vs Sri Lanka

Johnston becomes the second captain to be run out with out scoring in the World Cup. The first captain was Imran Khan in the match against India at Sydney on 04.03.92

2007 edition of World Cup has witnessed ten instances of captains run out – DT Johnston is the tenth captain. DT Johnston run out provides the 36th instance of a captain’s run out in the World Cup.

DT Johnston is the sixth captain to be dismissed run out on two occasions in the World Cup. Others are AR Border, WJ Cronje, MD Crowe, LRD Mendis and RT Ponting. SP Fleming, Habibul Bashar and Imran Khan are the three captains to be dismissed run out on three occasions in the World Cup.

Mahroof has captured four wickets on two occasions in this World Cup : 4 for 23 vs Bermuda on 15.03.07 and 4 for 25 vs Ireland on 18.04.07. Fervez Mahroof’s feat provide seventeenth instance of a bowler capturing four or more wickets in the same edition of the World Cup. Mahroof earns the distinction of third Sri Lankan bowler to capture four or more wickets in the same World Cup. Other two are ALF de Mel and Chaminda Vaas.

Mahroof’s 4 for 25 and Muralitharan’s 4 for 19 provide the ninth instance of two bowlers capturing four plus wickets in a World Cup game.

In Ireland’s innings there were five zeroes providing fifth such instance in the World Cup.

Ireland’s 77 in this game provide the 14th instance of team registering less than 100 in the World Cup. Ireland’s 77 provides the sixth lowest total in the World Cup. Ireland becomes the third team in the World Cup to be dismissed for a total less than 100 runs on two occasions. The two other teams are Canada and Namibia. Ireland’s 77 repersents the lowest of the four scores less than 100 runs in the current edition. Other three are 99 by Zimbabwe vs Pakistan on 21.03.07, 91 by Ireland vs Australia at Bridgetown on 13.04.07 and 78 by Bermuda vs Sri Lanka at Trinidad on 15.03.07

2007 edition has witnessed four totals of less than 100 runs – the most for any World Cup. 1975 and 2003 had witnessed three totals of less than 100 runs.

Ireland’s 77 in 27.4 overs provide the sixth instance of a side folding up under thirty overs in the World Cup.

The total aggregate of 158 in this game provide the fourth lowest aggregate in World Cup. The other three are 73 {Can vs Srl at Paarl on 19.02.03}, 91 {Eng vs Can at Manchester on 13.06.79} and 138 {Sco vs Win at Liecester on 27.05.99}

Kumara Sangakkara with his three catches in this game now leads the table with 15 dismissals {11 Ct plus 04 St} in the current edition leaving behind BB McCulum who has 14 dismissals {13 Ct plus 01 St}. D Ramdin is the other wicket keeper to have effected 10 or more dismissals {11 – all caught} in this edition.

Sri Lanka’s victory in this game with 240 balls to spare provide the third victory with most balls remaining in the history of the World Cup. The other two wins with most balls remaining are England’s victory over Canada with 277 balls to spare at Manchester on 13.07.79 followed by Sri Lanka’s victory over Canada at Paarl with 272 balls to spare on 19.02.03.

Muarlitharan and Vaas have 49 and 48 World Cup wickets and require two more wickets for 50 World Cup wickets. Glenn McGrath {65} and Wasim Akram {55} are ahead of Muralitharan and Vaas.

Kumara Sangakkara with three dismissals in this game now has 32 dismissals in the World Cup and went past MV Boucher who has 31 dismisals. Only Gilchrist with 44 dismissals is ahead of Sangakkara.

Muralitharan returned with his best figures in the World Cup when he took 4 for 19 in this game. His previous best was 4 for 28 against Kenya at Nairobi in 2003.

Murali’s 4 for 19 in this game provides the 20th instance of his capturing four or more wickets. He is the third bowler in ODIs to capture four or more wickets on 20 plus occasions. Other two are Waqar Younis 27 {14 Four plus 13 Five} and Wasim Akram {17 Four and 06 Five}.

Muralitharan has now taken his total aggregate of One day wickets to 451. Only Wasim Akram with 502 wickets is ahead of Muralitharan.

West Indies vs Bangladesh

Devon Smith who partnered Chris Gayle in this game had opened the batting for West Indies on six occasions earlier of which once was against Bangladesh – 3rd ODI in 2004 at St Georges. He had made 39 not out which was his second best score in ODIs.

Chris Gayle’s dismal run in the World Cup 2007 continued as his aggregate stood at 149 runs from eight games at an average of 18.62 runs per innings. He was dismissed for one run in this game.

Chris Gayle-DS Smith opening pair provide the 18th opening pair for West Indies in World Cup. In this 2007 edition Chris Gayle had three partners – SC Chanderpaul, DJ Bravo and DS Smith.

Sarwan’s fifty – 91 not out in this innings is the 100th fifty excluding hundreds in the current edition of World Cup.

Chanderpaul and Sarwan registered their seventh and third World Cup fifties in this game when they scored 50 and 91 not out respectively.

Sarwan’s 91 not out provide the 37th ninety in the World Cup and he is the seventh batsman to remain not out with a ninety. Others are DI Gower, IVA Richards, DL Haynes, RB Richardson, A Symonds and MJ Clarke. Sarwan is the fourth West Indian batsman to remain not out with a ninety.

Sarwan with 91 not out in this game and 92 against South Africa at St George’s on 10.04.07 registered two nineties in the World Cup. He is the seventh batsman to register two or more nineties in the World Cup. Others to register two nineties are MJ Clarke, MD Crowe, PA de Silva, RB Richardson and Zaheer Abbas. SR Tendulkar is the only batsmen to register three nineties in the World Cup.

Sarwan’s two nineties in this World Cup makes him the third batsman to register two nineties in the same edition of the World Cup. Others are MJ Clarke {2007} and SR Tendulkar {2003}.

This edition has witnessed eight instances of nineties – MJ Clarke {two}, GC Smith, RT Ponting, AB de Villers, PD Collingwood and RR Sarwan {two}

RR Sarwan becomes the second West Indian batsman after RB Richardson to register two nineties in the World Cup.

2007 edition remains the only edition which has witnessed two batsmen registering two nineties.

Ramdin has now an aggregate of 13 dismissals {all caught} in the current edition. Gilchirst with 15 and KC Sangakkara with 14 dismissals are ahead of Ramdin.

Brian Lara caught Abdur Razaak of DJ Bravo in this game which was his 121st catch in ODIs. He wrested the hitherto held record for most catches in ODIs by a West Indian fieldsman held by Hooper who had pouched 120 catches.

58 runs partnership between Mashrafe Mortaza and Mushfiqar Rahim is a new seventh wicket record in World Cup for Bangladesh. The previous best was 54 between Mohamad Ashraful and Masharafe Mortaza against South Africa at Guyana on 07.04.07

Australia vs New Zealand

Mathew Hayden became the first batsman to complete 500 runs in this edition when he was on 23 during the course of his knock of 103

Mathew Hayden earns the distinction of becoming the second batsman to register 500 runs in a single World Cup after Sachin Tendulkar. Hayden’s aggregate of 580 runs provide the third instance of a batsman totaling 500 plus runs in the World Cup. Sachin Tendulkar has done it twice {523 in 1996} and {673 in 2003}

Haydne’s century provides the 100th hundred in the World Cup. Progressive milestones read thus – First hundred – 137 by DL Amiss of England v
s India at Lord’s in 1973 : 25th hundred – 110 by RB Richardson of West Indies vs Pakistan at Karachi in 1987 : 50th hundred – 110 by ME Waugh of Australia vs New Zealand at Karachi in 1996 : 75th hundred – 134* by JF Kloppenburg of Netherlands vs Namibia at Bloemfontein in 2003

It is a strange coincidence that the 50th hundred and 100th hundred of the World Cup are scored by an Aussie batsman and the opponents on both occasions is New Zealand.

Hayden’s 103 in this game is his fourth hundred against New Zealand in ODIs and with this hundred he emulated RT Ponting who has four hundreds against New Zealand. RT Ponting and ML Hayden are the only two Aussie batsmen who have scored four hundreds against New Zealand

Hayden has scored three hundreds in this World Cup – 101 vs RSA at St Kitts on 24.03.07 : 158 vs Win at Antigua on 27.03.07 and 103 vs NZl at Greneda on 20.04.07. Hayden emulated his fellow countryman ME Waugh {1996} and SC Ganguly {2003} who had registered three hundreds in the same edition.

Hayden is the fifth batsman to register three hundreds in the World Cup. Others are Ramiz Raja, IVA Richards, Saeed Anwar and ST Jayasuriya.

137 runs partnership between ML Hayden and RT Ponting for the second wicket is the second best partnership for the second wicket by Aussies in the World Cup. The best is 144 runs stand between TM Chappell and KM Hughes vs India at Nottingham on 13.06.83. This stand is the best against New Zealand in the World Cup for the second wicket obliterating the 126 run stand between DM Jones and GR Marsh at Chandigarh on 27.10.87

SR Watson’s 50 in 28 balls in this game equals Aussie record of Tom Moody’s fifty in 28 balls against Bangladesh at Chester–le-Street on 27.05.1999 – the Aussie record for the fastest fifty in term of number of balls in World Cup

Australia’s 348 for 6 in this game is the highest total ever recorded by any team against New Zealand in World Cup. This is the third occasion when a team has posted 300 plus runs against New Zealand in World Cup. The other two instances are 322 for 6 by England at The Oval in 1983 and 306 for 6 by South Africa at Johannesburg in 2003.

New Zealand has conceded 300 runs for the first time in the World Cup at a Neutral Venue when Australia posted 348 for 6 in this game.

Australia has posted 300 plus runs on five occasions in this World cup improving their earlier record of four occasions in 2003 edition.

Australia has posted 300 plus runs in the World Cup on 13 occasions – most by any country – in the World Cup history. Sri Lanka and South Africa stand next to Australia having posted 300 plus runs on five occasions.

Australia’s 348 for 6 provides the 42nd instance of a team posting 300 plus runs in the World Cup and 14th occasion in 2007 edition.

Franklin is the third bowler in the World Cup to capture three wickets conceding 70 plus runs. His bowling figures of 8.0-0-74-3 represent the most expensive figures under the criteria of three wickets and seventy runs conceded. {Economy rate – 9.25} The other two are EA Brandes of Zimbabwe who had figures of 10.0-0-70-3 against Sri Lanka at New Plymouth in 1992 {Economy rate – 7.00} and RMH Binny of India who returned with figures of 12.0-0-71-3 {Economy rate – 5.91}.

McGrath with 22 wickets so far in this edition has equalled the Aussie record for most wickets in a World Cup held by Bret Lee who had captured 22 wkts in 2003. McGrath improved upon his previous tally of 21 in 2003 Word Cup. The record for most wickets in a World Cup is held by Chaminda Vaas who has 23 wickets to his credit in 2003. Thus McGrath becomes the only bowler in the history of World Cup to aggregate 20 plus wickets in two separate editions

Australia won this game by 215 runs providing the 22nd instance of 200 plus runs victory in ODIs and 8th in World Cups. New Zealand suffered its first defeat by 200 runs margin in ODIs.

Australia was playing its 657th One day game – most by a country and celebrated with a 200 run win. Prior to this game Australia and Pakistan had played 656 games each. Australia’s record at the end of this game – 657 games – 404 won – 227 lost – 08 tied – 18 No Result games- the first two parameters are World records {657 games and 404 wins}

With this win Australia has now won 21 World Cup games in a row { Lord’s 1999 to Greneda 2007}

With 4 for 29 in this game, Hogg becomes the second bowler in this edition to capture four wickets on two occasions after MF Mahroof of Sri Lanka. Hogg’s feat provides the 18th instance of a bowler capturing four or more wickets in the same World Cup. Hogg is the fourth bowler to achieve this feat after GJ Gilmour {1975}, CJ McDermott {1987} and SK Warne {1996 and 1999}

Hogg is the second bowler to capture four or more wickets against New Zealand in the World Cup after B Lee who had figures of 5 for 42 at Port Elizabeth in 2003.

At the end of this game, Hogg and Tait have aggregated 19 wickets each in this edition. Muralitharan is the other bowler to have 19 wickets. McGrath with 22 wickets is ahead of these three bowlers.

England’s act of inserting the toss in this game provides the 19th instance in World Cup Games. England and West Indies have
inserted the opposition on 19 occasions hold the joint third sport with NZl {24} and Srl {21} the top two positions.

Stuart Broad became the 88th Eng Cricketer to make an appearance in World Cup.

West Indies posted their best opening stand in this edition when Chris Gayle and Devon Smith added 131 runs. The only other stand of fifty plus runs for the first wicket in this edition was 73 between S Chanderpaul and CH Gayle against Zim at Jamaica on 19.03.07

It is interesting to note that the previous three figure stand for the opening wicket was posted 13 years one month and 18 days back when DL Haynes and PV Simmons were concerned in 145 run stand at Georgetown on 02.03.1994. In between 02.03.94 and 21.04.07 West Indies and England had played 26 games.

Brian Lara has been dismissed run out on 19 occasions in ODIs and on three occasions in World Cup.

He is the fifth captain to be dismissed run out in ODIs in a farewell game. Others are A Ranatunga of Sri Lanka, KWR Fletcher, MA Taylor and JM Brearley

West Indies’s total of 300 in 49.4 overs in this game provide the second instance of West Indies posting a total of 300 plus in World Cup. The other occasion was against Sri Lanka at Karachi on 13.10.87 when they posted 360 for 4.

LE Plunkett becomes the fourth England bowler to concede 70 runs in a World Cup game when he retunred with figures of 1 for 71. Others are PJW Allott {1 for 82 vs Srl at Taunton in 1983}, DR Pringle {0 for 83 vs Win at Gujranwala in 1987} and RK Illingworth {1 for 72 vs Srl at Faisalabad in 1996}. Plunkett is the second England bowler to concede 70 plus runs against West Indies in the World Cup.

Only two bowlers have conceded 70 plus runs in seven overs in the World Cup. MO Jones {7.0-0-74-1 for Ber vs Ind at Trinidad on 19.03.07 – Economy rate – 10.57 } and LE Plunkett {7.0-0-71-1 for Eng vs Win at Bridgetown on 21.04.07 – Economy rate – 10.14} are the two bowlers.

In the ODIs only two England bowlers have conceded 70 plus runs in seven overs – SI Mahmooad {none for 81 vs Srl at The Oval on 20.06.06 : Eco Rate – 11.42} and LE Plunkett {1 for 71 vs Win at Bridgetown on 21.04.07 : Eco rate – 10.14}

MP Vaughan became the third England captain to register fifty against West Indies in World Cup. His 79 in this game not only represents the highest score by an England captain against West Indies in World Cup {previous best – 65 by GA Gooch at Melbourne on 27.02.92} and also the second highest score by an England captain in the World Cup {Previous best – 88 by AJ Stewert vs Srl at Lord’s on 14.05.99}

MP Vaughan’s run out on 79 provide the ninth instance of a captain run out after registering fifty in the World Cup. He is the second England captain to be run out with a fifty {79} after AJ Stewert {who had made 77 vs RSA at Melbourne on 12.03.92.

AJ Stewert and MP Vaughan also figure as the two England openers in the list of opening batsmen who were run out after registering fifties in the World Cup.

BC Lara and MP Vaughan’s run out dismissals in this game provide the second instance of rival captains run out in a World Cup game. The first instance was at Durban on 03.03.03 when ST Jayasuriya and SM Pollock were run out in the match between South Africa and Sri Lanka.

For the first time in the World Cup history rival opening batsmen registered identical score. In this game Chris Gayle for England and MP Vaughan registered 79 respectively.

K Pieterson with an aggregate of 444 runs becames the eighth batsman to aggregate 400 plus runs in this edition. Others are ML Hayden, RT Ponting, JH Kallis, SB Styris, GC Smith, M Jayawardene and ST Jayasuriya.

England won this game by one wicket providing the fourth instance of one wicket win in World Cup games. The other three are Win vs Pak at Birmingham in 1975, Pak vs Win at Lahore in 1987 and RSA vs Srl at Providence in 2007. This is the second occasion of one wicket victory in 2007.

This game also provides the fourth instance of a victory by a team with one ball remaining in the World Cup. The other three games are NZl vs Eng at Birmingham on 15.06.83 : Srl vs RSA at Wellington on 02.03.92 : Eng vs RSA at Melbourne on 12.03.92

West Indies losing this game after posting 300 runs provide is the third instance of a team losing the game after posting 300 plus runs in the World Cup. The other two instances are Zimbabwe losing to Sri Lanka after posting 312-4 at New Plymouth in 1992 and South Africa losing to New Zealand under DL Method after posting 306-6 at Johannesburg in 2003.

West Indies and Pakistan have lost six games each after posting 300 plus runs in ODIs. India leads this table with seven occasions.

First Semi Final – New Zealand vs Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka batted first after winning the toss for the ninth time in World Cup. Of the nine games they have won four games, lost four games and one game was tied.

Sanath Jayasuriya has been dismissed bowled in World Cup on five occasions including the one in this game. He has been dismissed bowled for the third time in this edition.

It is the second time that he was dismissed for a score of one in the World Cup. The earlier occasion was also a semi final game against India in 1995-96 at Calcutta. He was caught by Venkatesh Prasad of Javagal Srinath for one.

Upul Tharanga registered his third fifty in this tournament when he made 73. This was highest World Cup score obliterating his score of 64 made against India at Trinidad on 23.03.07. The other fifty plus score was 62 against England at North Sound on 04.04.07

Tharanga’s 73 the 65th fifties excluding hundreds by Sri Lankan batsmen in World Cup which makes Sri Lanka to take the fourth spot in the list of countries which have made 65 plus fifties excluding hundreds in the World Cup. Australia {81}, England {70} and New Zealand {67} are the countries ahead of Sri Lanka.

Jayawardene’s 115 not out in this game provides the 18th hundred by a captain in the World Cup. Jayawardene becomes the second Sri Lankan captain to register a hundred in the World Cup after Sanath Jayasuriya’s 120 against New Zealand at Bloemfontein on 10.02.03. It is interesting to note that against New Zealand there are only two hundreds registered in the World Cup and these two hundreds are by Sri Lankan batsmen – Sanath Jayasuriya and Mahela Jayawardene.

Jayawardene’s 115 not out provide the fourth instance of a hundred by a batsman in the Semi finals of the World Cup. The other three are – 115 by GA Gooch of England vs India at Bombay in 1987 : 113* by Saeed Anwar of Pakistan vs New Zealand at Manchester in 1999 and 111* by SC Ganguly of India vs Kenya at Durban in 2002

Jayawardene’s 115 not out represent the highest individual score in the semi finals of the World Cup. It is also the second hundred by a captain in the semi finals of the World Cup after Saurav Ganguly’s 111 not out against Kenya at Durban in 2003. It also represents the second hundred against New Zealand in the semi finals of the World Cup

Sri Lanka’s 289 for 5 is the second highest score posted by a team in semi finals of the World Cup, The highest score is 293 for 6 in 60.0 overs by West Indies against Pakistan in 1979.

Muralitharan claimed his 50th World Cup wicket when he claimed the wicket of Jacob Oram caught and bowled for 3 in this game. He is the third bowler after Glen McGrath and Wasim Akram to capture 50 World Cup Wickets. At the end of the game Murali has an aggregate of 53 World Cup Wickets

Jacob Oram’s wicket gave Muralitharan another record – his 65th wicket against New Zealand in One day Internationals. This wicket made him the second highest wicket taker against New Zealand in ODIs after Waqar Younis who has 79 wickets to his credit. Murali left behind Wasim Akram who had 64 wickets in the process. At the end of the match Murali’s aggregate against New Zealand stood at 68 wickets.

Muralitharan with 23 wickets in this edition equalled the World Cup record aggregate for a single edition held by Chaminda Vaas who also had 23 wickets in 2003 edition. Murali’s 23 wickets is the highest aggregate in this edition. Glen McGrath has 22 wickets to his credit.

Muralitharan {46}, Chaminda Vaas {26} and Sanath Jayasuriya {26} together have an aggregate of 98 wickets in Sri Lanka’s winning games against New Zealand in ODIs.

Muralitharan’s 4 for 31 in this game provide the 10th instance of a bowler taking four or more wickets in Semi finals of the World Cup. Muralitharan is the lone Sri Lankan bowler in this list. South Africa losing half its side for 27 runs in this game provides the third instance of a side losing five wickets under 35 runs in a semi final of the World Cup. McGrath took his 23rd wicket in this World Cup when he had JH Kallis bowled for 5 and equalled the record of Muthaih Muralitharan’s aggregate of 23 wickets in this edition. He went past Murali’s record of 23 wickets with the wicket of AG Prince caught by Gilchrist for zero – his 24th wicket to become the highest wicket taker in any edition of the World Cup. McGrath earned the distinction of becoming the first bowler to capture 25 wickets in any edition of the World Cup when he had MV Boucher caught by Hayden for Zero.

McGrath’s 25 in this World Cup provide the second instance of his taking 25 plus wickets in a series in One Day Internationals. The other occasion of his 25 plus wickets in a series is his 27 wickets – an all time record for any bowler – in Carlton and United Series in 1998-99. Denis Lillee is the other bowler to have an aggregate of 25 wickets in a series – 25 wickets in Benson and Hedges World Cup series in 1980-81.

Twenty plus wickets in a World Cup series has been accomplished by bowlers on nine occasions – two bowlers in 1999 : three bowlers in 2003 and four bowlers in 2007. 2007 series has witnessed the most number of bowlers aggregating 20 plus wickets

Adam Gilchrist’s four catches in this game provides the third instance of his effecting four or more dismissals in the World Cup – a record for most instances in the World Cup. SW Tait with his 4 for 39 in this game becomes the fourth bowler and second Australian bowler to capture four wickets against South Africa in World Cup. The other bowlers are RA Harper of West Indies in 1996, SK Warne of Australia in 1999 and SL Malinga of Sri Lanka in 2007.

SW Tait’s 4 for 39 is his first four wicket haul in ODIs and his four wickets provide the 17th instance of an Aussie bowler capturing four or more wickets against South Africa in ODIs.

South Africa’s 149 all out batting first in this game provides the sixth instance of a team all out batting first for less than 150 in this edition.

South Africa’s 149 all out batting first – provides the third instance of all out in World Cup. The other two are – 230 vs England at Rawalpindi in 1996 and 195 vs Sri Lanka at Wellington in 1992. 149 all out in this game is the lowest total by South Africa batting first and this is the first time that South Africa has been dismissed for a total less than 150 in World Cup. Ponting completed 500 runs in this edition and his aggregate at the end of the game stood at 502. He is the third batsman after Hayden {621} and Jayawardene {529} to reach the mile stone.

Ponting’s 502 in this edition provides the fifth instance of a batsman aggregating 500 plus runs in a World Cup. He if the fourth batsmen to achieve the distinction. Others are SR Tendulkar {twice}, ML Hayden, M Jayawardene.

2007 edition has witnessed three batsmen – Hayden, Jayawardene and Ponting aggregating 500 plus runs – a record by most batsmen aggregating 500 plus runs in a single edition of the World Cup.

Among the above list Mahela Jayawardene and Ricky Ponting are the captains who have aggregated 500 plus runs and both have achieved the milestone in this edition. Right through the earlier eight World Cup editions, there are no instances of any captain registering 500 plus runs.

Ricky Ponting has been dismissed bowled on five occasions in the World Cup including the one in this game. Adam Gilchrist has been dismissed bowled on seven occasions including the one in this game. Gilchrist has been dismissed for single digit score {zero to nine} on seven occasions in the World Cup including the one in this game.

McGrath took his 300th wicket in Australia’s winning games when he had the wicket of Mark Boucher caught by Hayden for zero. McGrath is the third bowler to capture 300 wickets in a country’s winning games after Wasim Akram {326} and Muralitharan {305}

The victory in this game was Australia’s 50th win in World Cup.

Finals – Australia vs Sri Lanka

This is the second World Cup final delayed by rain. In 1999 Final between Australia and Pakistan at Lord’s on 20.06.99 Start of match delayed by 30 minutes to 11:15 AM after morning rain. Lunch break rescheduled to 2:45 PM to 3:15 PM, and close of play extended to 6:45 PM. Gilchrist and Hayden were concerned in a three figure partnership of 172 runs for the opening wicket in this game. This is the 16th opening partnership of 100 plus runs that these two batsmen have put on in ODIs which overtook the 15 opening partnerships of 100 plus runs posted by Desmond Haynes and Gordon Greenidge of West Indies. Gilchrist becomes the fourth wicket keeper batsman to register a hundred in the World Cup when he made 149. Gilchrist registered his highest score in the World Cup with his 149 runs in this game an improvement over his previous best of 99 vs Sri Lanka at Centurion in 2003.

172 runs partnership between Gilchrist and Hayden is the second best partnership in the finals of the World Cup. The best is the 234 runs unfinished stand between RT Ponting and DR Martyn for Australia against India at Johannesburg in 2003 Finals. The previous second best was the 149 runs stand between RB Kanhai and CH Lloyd in the game between West Indies and Australia in 1975 finals.

172 runs partnership between Gilchrist and Hayden provides the 175th three figure stand in World Cup.

Gilchrist completed 9000 runs of his one day career during this innings when he was on 111 and his aggregate stood at 9038 at the end of this game

He also completed 1000 World Cup runs {1085} to become the 12th batsman to reach the milestone. Others are SR Tendulkar, RT Ponting, BC Lara, ST Jayasuriya, Javed Miandad, SP Fleming, HH Gibbs, PA de Silva, IVA Richards, SC Ganguly and ME Waugh.

With Gilchrist completing 1000 plus runs, Australia became the first country to have three batsmen with 1000 World Cup runs. Other two are RT Ponting and ME Waugh

Gilchrist hit eight sixes in his innings of 149 which equalled the eight sixes of RT Ponting {Aus vs Ind at Johannesburg – 2003} and Imran Nazir { Pak vs Zim at Kingston 2007}. Gilchrist and Ponting share the record for most sixes in an innings in World Cup final.

Chaminda Vaas when he conceded 14 runs in this game, conceded 1000 runs in World Cup game to become the sixth bowler to concede 1000 runs in the World Cup. The others are Wasim Akram, Javagal Srinath, Muraltharan, Jayasuriya and McGrath.

Three Sri Lankan bowlers – Muralitharan, Jayasuriya and Vaas are playing in this game provided the first instance in the World Cup which comprised of three bowlers from the same team who have conceded 1000 World Cup runs. Add to this McGrath of Australia – this game becomes the only game in the World Cup in which four bowlers who have conceded 1000 World Cup game playing together and that game is the finals of the World Cup 2007

WU Tharanga became Gilchrist’s 50th victim in World Cup. {44 catches plus six stumpings}. Gilchrist becomes the only wicket keeper to effect fifty dismissals in World Cup. At the end of the game he had 52 victims {45 ct plus 07 st}

Watson completed 1000 runs of his One day Career when he was on 2 in his innings of three runs in this game

In a 38 over game there are only two instances of a team posting 250 plus runs in ODIs – 254 for 5 by New Zealand against South Africa at Wellington on 20.02.04 and 281 for 5 by Australia against Sri Lanka at Bridgetown on 28.04.07 – the latter representing the highest team total posted by a team in a 38 over game.

RT Ponting’s run out in this game provides the 39th instance of a captain run out in World Cup. His run out provides the 13th instance of a captain run out in 2007 edition – the most for any edition in the World Cup. In 1992 edition there were seven instances of a captain’s run out.

RT Ponting become the fourth captain to run out on three occasions in the World Cup. Others are SP Fleming, Habibul Bashar and Imran Khan. Habibul Bashar and RT Ponting are the only two captains run out on three occasions in a single edition of the World Cup {2007 edition}

When RT Ponting caught Sangakkara off Hogg, it was his 25th catch in the World Cup. Ponting became the first fieldsman to pouch 25 catches in the World Cup.

For the first time in the World Cup rival wicket keepers registered a hundred and a fifty For Australia, Gilchrist registered 149 and for Sri Lanka, Kumar Sangakkara came up with 54.
