Some interesting facts about centuries at Rajkot

England’s JE Root {124}, MM Ali {117} and BA Stokes {128} scored centuries in the same innings to provide the third occasion of three or more batsmen scoring centuries in the same innings against India on Indian grounds hosting its first test. It also provides the second such occasion by visiting batsmen. The first such occasion was four centuries in an innings by West Indies batsman in Delhi’s first test

England’s JE Root {124}, MM Ali {117} and BA Stokes {128} scored centuries in the same innings to provide the tenth occasion of three or more batsmen scoring centuries in the same innings against India in India. It also provides the second such occasion by England batsmen.

BA Stokes’ 128 provides the 200th occasion of a visiting batsman scoring a hundred against India in India.

JE Root {124}, MM Ali {117}, BA Stokes {128}, M Vijay {126} and CA Pujara {124} scored centuries in this test as on third day of the test to provide the third occasion of five batsmen scoring centuries in the same innings against India on Indian grounds hosting its first test. The first such occasion was witnessed in Delhi’s first test in November 1948 while the second occasion was witnessed at Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium, Hyderabad in November 1955. It is interesting to note all the three occasions have come on Indian ground hosting its first test in the month of November. The particulars of these three occasions are listed below

JE Root for England and CA Pujara scored identical number of runs – 124 – providing the first occasion in the annals of test cricket – of batsmen batting at number three scoring identical runs in the first and second innings of a test

M Vijay’s 126 in this test provides the 136th occasion of an Indian opening batsman scoring a century against various oppositions. It also provides the 68th occasion of an Indian opening batsman scoring a century against various oppositions on Indian soil. It is interesting to note that out of 136 occasions of an Indian opener scoring centuries, exact half of this number – that is on 68 occasions – an Indian opening batsmen have scored centuries against various oppositions on home soil.

CA Pujara became the fourth batsman to score  centuries on two Indian grounds hosting its first test. Others are ED Weekes of West Indies, CH Lloyd of West Indies and SR Tendulkar of India. The centuries scored by these four batsmen are furnished below. CA Pujara is  the second Indian batsman to accomplish such a feat after SR Tendulkar.

It also provides the second such occasion by England batsmen. The first such occasion was witnessed at Mum-BS in Feb 1973, when KWR Fletcher {113} and AW Greig {148} scored centuries batting at number five and six respectively
