IPL 500th game – miscomputation – abandoned games without toss are taken into account while computing

IPL 500th game – miscomputation – abandoned games without toss are taken into account while computing

We are reproducing an article posted on this portal in IPL 2015 when commentators and the statistician assisting the commentators on the day of the match miscounted the  number of IPL games without taking into account the number of six abandoned games.

Some of the Commentators while commenting on IPL had labeled the second game of 03rd May 2015 – between Rajasthan and Delhi at Mum-BS as 500th IPL Game. It’s a wrong computation.  They have counted the fixtures of IPL and not the actual games. There were six abandoned games which should not be taken into account as these games were abandoned without a ball being bowled. Hence the game under question was 494th game of IPL. Furnishing below the table in which I have arrived second game of 03.05.15 as 494th IPL game

If second game of 03.05.15 was the 500th game, then the total number of matches played should have been 1000 {500 x 2}.

Six abandoned games are not taken into account in the captioned table. These six games would be 12 games in the table as they get distributed to two teams and hence 1000 – 12 = 988.  Half of 988 is 494 which is the actual number of matches played in IPL as of 03.05.15

It is the second such game to be abandoned with a ball being bowled – both for Royal Challengers Bangalore as a team and also for Bangalore as a Ground.  The first such occasion was against Rajasthan at Bangalore on 19.04.11

Indian Premier League has witnessed an abandoned game on the same date – that is 25th of April – eight years ago. On 25.04.09, the game between Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders at Cape Town was  abandoned without a ball being bowled.

Kolkata Knight Riders is one of the teams involved in an abandoned game on four occasions – most in the tournament.  Rajasthan has experienced three such games and Bangalore on two occasions. Indian Premier League editions of 2010, 2013 and 2014 and 2016 did not witness an abandoned game

The abandoned games without a ball being bowled and without toss do not count in the list of any cricket games and is not added to the career of the cricketers and to  the  match officials. Statisticians, Scorers and Commentators should take a note of this.

However abandoned games after the toss gets counted in the list and gets added as a game to the careers of the eleven cricketers nominated by the teams prior to the toss and also to career of the match officials
