India won the toss and elected to bat first to provide the 52nd occasion of India doing so against England. It also provides the 32nd occasion of India doing so against England in India and the third such occasion at Chepauk.

India capped A Patel for this test. He became the 301st cricketer to represent India in test cricket. He also became the 164th cricketer to represent India on home soil and 22nd cricketer to make his test debut at Chepauk.

Shubman Gill’s duck in this test provides the 46th occasion of an Indian opening batsman scoring a duck in a test innings against England. It also provides the 15th occasion of an Indian opening batsman scoring a duck in a test innings against England on home soil. He became the fourth Indian opening batsman to collect a duck against England at Chepauk

V Kohli and MAK Pataudi share the second place amongst the Indian captains who have scored most ducks. MS Dhoni occupies the first place with eight ducks to his credit.

V Kohli became the 14th captain in the annals of test cricket to score seven or more ducks.
