AY Patel of New Zealand captured 10 for 119 against India at Mum-WS to become the first left arm spin bowler to capture all the ten wickets in a test innings.

He became the first bowler to perform the feat in the first innings of a test. JC Laker had performed the feat in the third innings of the test while A Kumble had performed the feat in the fourth innings of a test.

He became the first bowler to perform the feat in an away test.. JC Laker and A Kumble had performed the feat in home tests. JC Laker’s feat was at Manchester against Australia, while A Kumble’s performance was against Pakistan at Delhi.

Indian soil has witnessed two bowlers capturing all the ten wickets in an innings – A Kumble at Delhi and AY Patel at Mum-WS.

AY Patel now holds the best figures by a New Zealand bowler in a test innings on away soil. The previous best by a New Zealand bowler on away soil was RJ Hadlee’s 9 for 52 against Australia at Brisbane in Nov 85.

AY Patel’s 10 for 119 against India at Mum-WS represent the best bowling figures by a bowler in his place of birth. It was an improvement over Sri Lankan M Muralitharan’s 9 for 51 vs Zimbabwe at Kandy in 2002 and  Pakistani Abdul Qadir’s 9 for 56 Vs England at Lahore in 1987.
