FDM Karunaratne went past ST Jayasuriya who had scored 13 centuries, on his way to occupy the second place. FDM Karunaratne became the first Sri Lankan captain opener to score six  centuries. MS Atapattu {04}, ST Jayasuriya {04} and TM Dilshan {01} are the other Sri Lankan captain openers who have scored centuries.

FDM Karunaratne was playing his 75th test and made it memorable by scoring a century and also by reaching 5500 runs as an opening batsman. At the end of this test, his run aggregate read 5588. He is one of the three Sri Lankan openers who have an aggregate of 5000 plus runs. Others are ST Jayasuriya {5932} and MS Atapattu {5317}
