England Vs India – Birmingham Test – First day
England won the toss and chose to field first in this test to provide the 15th occasion of England doing so against India. It also provides the 14th occasion of England doing so against India on home soil and second such occasion in a test at Birmingham
This test witnessed both the teams led by new captains in England-India test series. BA Stokes who captained England became the 31st captain to lead England against India. JJ Bumrah who captained India became the 20th captain to lead India against England.
Shubman Gill and CA Pujara who opened India’s innings in this test became the 162nd opening pair for India in tests. They also became the 72nd India’s opening pair against England.
Shubman Gill and CA Pujara who opened India’s innings in this test became the 104th opening pair for India in away tests. They also became the 40th India’s opening pair against England in England.
CA Pujara opened the innings for the eighth occasion in his test career of which he has batted at number two position on seven occasions. This is the second occasion of his batting at number two position for the second time in the first innings of a test. The other occasion was against Sri Lanka at Col-SSC in Aug 2015. He had scored 145 not out in this innings.
