India won the toss and elected to field first to provide the eleventh occasion of India doing so against Australia. India is yet win a test against Australia when it has inserted Australia. India has lost five tests and five tests have ended in a draw.

UT Khawaja was dismissed for a zero in Australia’s first innings to provide the 24th occasion of an Australian opener dismissed for zero in an innings against India.

It also provides the seventh occasion of an Australian opener dismissed for zero in Australia’s first innings against India.

It also provides the second occasion for Usman Khawaja getting dismissed without scoring in an innings against India while opening the innings. The first such occasion was at Indore in March 2023. He was dismissed caught by wicket keeper KS Bharath on both occasions. He was dismissed by R Ashwin at Indore and by Mohd Siraj at The Oval

UT Khawaja’s dismissal for zero in Australia’s first innings provides the tenth occasion of an Australian opener batting at number two dismissed for a zero against India.

UT Khawaja became the third Australian opening batsman to be dismissed for a zero after playing ten or more deliveries in an innings against India. In this innings, he was dismissed for a duck after playing ten deliveries. Others are – SE Marsh at Pune in Feb 2017 after playing 21 deliveries and JA Burns at Melbourne in Dec 2020 after playing 10 deliveries.

RG Sharma was making his 50th appearance in this test. He became the 36th Indian cricketer to make 50 plus appearance

UT Khawaja’s ten ball duck in Australia’s first innings of this test provides the 131st occasion of an Australian batsman to be dismissed for a zero after playing ten or more deliveries in an innings against various oppositions. It also provided the 24th occasion of an Australian batsman to be dismissed for a zero after playing ten or more deliveries in an innings against India.

UT Khawaja registered his sixth zero of his test career when he was dismissed for a duck in Australia’s first innings in this test. It also represents his second duck while opening the innings for Australia.

UT Khawaja’s ten ball duck in Australia’s first innings of this test provides the 29th occasion of an opening batsman to be dismissed for a zero in a test played at a neutral venue. He also became the second opening batsman to score a zero after playing ten or more deliveries in an innings in a test at neutral venue. JA Raval of New Zealand was the other batsman who collected a zero after playing 15 deliveries against Pakistan at Abu Dhabi in Dec 2018.

It also provides the second occasion of an Australian opening batsman to be dismissed for a zero in an innings in a test played at a neutral venue. CB Jennigs was the other Australian opening batsman to suffer such an ignominy. He had scored duck against South Africa at Lord’s in Jul 1912. The interval between these two instances is 111 years

SPD Smith and TM Head posted 251 runs unfinished partnership for the fourth wicket at the end of the first day to provide the 124h occasion of Australian batsmen posting a three figure partnership against India. It also provides the 25th occasion of Australian batsmen posting a three figure partnership against India for the fourth wicket

SPD Smith and TM Head posted 251 runs unfinished partnership for the fourth wicket at the end of the first day to provide the 18th occasion of Australian batsmen posting 200 plus runs partnership against India. It also provides the fourth occasion of Australian batsmen posting 200 plus runs partnership against India for the fourth wicket.

SPD Smith and TM Head posted 251 runs unfinished partnership for the fourth wicket at the end of the first day to provide the fourth occasion of Australian batsmen posting 250 plus runs partnership against India. It also provides the third occasion of Australian batsmen posting 250 plus runs partnership against India for the fourth wicket.

SPD Smith and TM Head posted 251 runs unfinished partnership for the fourth wicket at the end of the first day to provide the 18th occasion of batsmen posting 200 plus runs partnership in a test played at the neutral venue. It also provides the fourth occasion of batsmen posting 200 plus runs partnership for the fourth wicket in a test played at the neutral venue.

TM Head scored 146 not out at the end of the first day’s play to provide the 108th occasion of an Australian batsman scoring a century against India.

It also provides the 91st occasion of a batsman scoring a century in a test played at a neutral venue. It also provides the eleventh occasion of an Australian batsman scoring  a century in a test played at a neutral venue

KIC Asalanka was dismissed run out for 91 against Afghanistan at Hambantota on 02 Jun 2023 in the first one day international to provide the 64th occasion of a batsman dismissed run out after scoring a ninety in the history of one day internationals. All such occasions are tabulated below. It is interesting to note that SM Gavaskar of India is the first batsman to be dismissed run out after scoring a ninety in the history of one day internationals. He was dismissed run out for 90 against West Indies at Albion on 29 Mar 1983.

SR Tendulkar’s 3630 runs from 39 tests containing 27 fifties {11 centuries and 16 half centuries} is the highest run aggregate by an Indian batsman against Australia. SR Tendulkar’s 3630 run aggregate represents the highest run aggregate in India-Australia test series. SR Tendulkar’s eleven centuries represents not only the most centuries by an Indian batsman against Australia but also represents the most centuries by a batsman in India-Australia test series.

RT Ponting’s 2555 runs from 29 test containing 20 fifties {08 centuries and 12 half centuries} is the highest run aggregate by an Australian batsman against India.

SR Tendulkar’s run aggregate of 3630 runs, his 39 tests and 74 innings, eight not outs against Australia, 27 fifties, eleven centuries, sixteen half centuries are all record parameters in India-Australia test series for most run aggregate, most test appearances, most  innings appearances, most not outs, most fifties, most centuries and most half centuries.

There are 76 occasions of Indian bowlers captain five or more wickets against Australia. Of these 76 occasions, there is one occasion of a bowler capturing nine wickets in an innings and three occasions of bowlers capturing eight wickets in an innings. JM Patel’s 9 for 69 at Kanpur in Dec 1959 represents the best innings bowling effort by an Indian bowler against Australia. This effort not only represents the only occasion of a bowler capturing nine wickets in an innings in India-Australia test series, but also represents the best innings bowling effort in India-Australia test series.

There are 66 occasions of Australian bowlers captain five or more wickets against India. Of these 66 occasions, there are three occasions of bowlers capturing eight wickets in an innings. NM Lyon’s 8 for 50 at Bengaluru in Mar 2017 represents the best innings bowling effort by an Australian bowler against India.

The series has witnessed 13 occasions of Indian bowlers capturing ten or more wickets in a match against Australia. Harbhajan Singh’s 15 for 217 runs at Chennai in Mar 2001 is the best match bowling effort by an Indian bowler against Australia. This effort not only represents the only occasion of a bowler capturing fifteen wickets in a match in India-Australia test series, but also represents the best match bowling effort in India-Australia test series.

There are 16 occasions of Australian bowlers capturing ten or more wickets in a match against India. SNJ O’Keefe’s 12 for 70 at Pune in Feb 2017 is the best match bowling effort by an Australian bowler against India.

Indian batsmen have posted 109 three figure partnerships against Australia. Of these 109 partnerships, five are 300 plus runs partnerships, six are 200 to 299 runs partnerships. 376 runs partnership for the fifth wicket in India’s second innings between R Dravid and VVS Laxman at Kolkata in Mar 2001 represent India’s highest partnership for any wicket against Australia.

Australian batsmen have posted 123 three figure partnerships against India. Of these 123 partnerships, two are 300 plus runs partnerships and 14 are 200 to 299 runs partnerships. 386 runs partnership for the fourth wicket in Australia’s first innings at Adelaide in Jan 2012 represent Australia’s highest partnership for any wicket against India. MS Dhoni with 71 dismissals {56 catches and 15 stumping} holds the record for most dismissals by an Indian wicket keeper against Australia. His 15 stumping is a record for most stumping dismissals by an Indian wicket keeper against Australia. It is also a record for most stumping dismissals by any wicket keeper in India-Australia test series.
