DPMD Jayawardene and HAPW Jayawardene added 351 runs for the sixth wicket provides the 72nd occasion of a 300 plus runs partnership in the annals of test cricket.
DPMD Jayawardene and HAPW Jayawardene added 351 runs for the sixth wicket which represents the world record partnership for the sixth wicket. The pair wrested the previous best for the sixth wicket which was credited to JH Fingleton and DG Bradman who had added 346 runs in the test match between Australia and England at Melbourne in Jan 1937. Thus “Jayawardene pair” rewrote 72 old record.

MS Dhoni scored 110 for India while HAPW Jayaawardene scored 154 not out for Sri Lanka providing the second occasion of rival wicket keeper batsmen scoring hundreds in a test match. The first such occasion was witnessed in a test match between West Indies and India at St John’s in May 02. A Ratra scored 115 not out for India, while RD Jacobs scored 118 for West Indies. It is interesting to note that on both these occasions an Indian wicket keeper is involved

HAPW Jayawardene’s 154 not out represent the 16th occasion of a Sri Lankan wicket keeper batsman scoring a hundred in a test match. He became the third Sri Lankan wicket keeper batsman to score a hundred against India. The other two are – SAR Silva {111 at Col-PSS in Sep 85} and KC Sangakkara {105* at Galle in Aug 01}.

Sri Lanka became the first team to post a total of 750 plus runs on Indian soil, when it posted 760 for 7 declared in this match. The previous best by a visiting team on Indian soil was 652 for 7 declared at Chennai in Jan 85.

DPMD Jayawardene became the third batsman to aggregate 1000 plus runs in 2009. He reached the milestone when he was on 179 during his knock of 204 not out. At the end of his innings, he had an aggregate stood at 1096. The other two batsmen are – TT Samaraweera of Sri Lanka {1153} and AJ Strauss {1071}. Jayawardene is the second Sri Lankan batsman to aggregate 1000 plus runs in 2009 after TT Samaraweera.
DPMD Jayawardene’s run aggregate against India at the end of the third day stood at 1436. He has now the most runs by a Sri Lankan batsman against India. He wrested the record from PA de Silva who had an aggregate of 1252.
