Highlights of the Ranji Trophy Semi Final between Karnataka/Uttar Pradesh at Bangalore from 3rd to 6th January 2010

This was the first Ranji Trophy match played by Karnataka at Bangalore in 2009/10. The previous seven matches had all been played outside Bangalore.

By virtue of First innings lead, Karnataka qualified for the Final of the Ranji Trophy this season. This was Karnataka’s 27th Semi final fixture in Ranji Trophy Championship.

Out of these 27 occasions, Karnataka has been the finalists on 12 occasions. Karnataka will now meet Mumbai in the Finals of 2009-10 season which is slated for 11th of January 2010

Karnataka’s 575 for 7 declared in this game represent the 31st occasion of Karnataka posting 550 plus runs against various oppositions in Ranji Trophy.

Karnataka has posted 500 plus runs against Uttar Pradesh on three occasions. They are – 617 for 9 at Bangalore in 1997/98, 575 for 7 declared at Bangalore in 2009/10 and 511 at Bangalore in 2008/09

R Dravid’s 209 not out represent the third double hundred by a Karnataka batsman against Uttar Pradesh. The other two double hundreds are – 247 by GR Viswanath at Mohan Nagar in 1977-78 and 215 by R Dravid at Bangalore in 1997-98

Apart from R Dravid who has scored five double hundreds, B Rowland is the other Karnataka batsman who has scored three double hundreds

KB Pawan registered his tenth when he made 52 in this game. MK Pandey registered his ninth fifty with his 66 in this game.

MK Pandey has now scored 738 runs from eight matches and is the second batsman to aggregate 700 plus runs in 2009-10 Ranji Season. The other batsman is AB Rahane of Mumbai {791}. MK Pandey’s 738 runs have come in his debut season. He is the second Karnataka batsman to aggregate 500 plus runs in the debut season after MR Beerala who aggregated 617 runs in 1999-00 season.

At the end of this game, the four Karnataka batsmen have an aggregate of 500 plus runs in 2009-10 season – MK Pandey {738}, KB Pawan {575}, G Satish {554} and A Verma {550}. G Satish and A Verma reached the milestone in this game

CM Gautam’s 100 in Karnataka’s second innings is his second hundred in Ranji Trophy this season. His first hundred of the season was his 108* against Bengal at Mysore in this season.

RP Sravastava registered his seventh half century and ninth fifty when he made 55 in this game. He was playing his 35th match. P Kumar registered his eighth half century in his 32nd match when he scored 58 not out in this game

At the end of this game, R Vinaykumar has an aggregate of 39 wickets from seven matches. He has the record for most wickets in 2009-10 season. A Mithun has 38 wickets from eight matches in this season and his aggregate is the second best for the 2009-10 season.

It is interesting to note that there are two occasions of batsman’s individual score greater than team’s total in Karanatka-Uttar Pradesh encounters.

01. At Mohannagar in 1977-78 : GR Viswanath scored 247 and Uttar Pradesh were all out for 129 in the first innings and 112 in the second innings

02 . At Bangalore in 2009/10 : R Dravid scored 209 not out and Uttar Pradesh were all out for 208 in its first innings

P Gupta of Uttar Pradesh captured his 100th first class wicket when he dismissed CM Gautam in Karnataka’s first innings

There were four three figure partnerships in Karnataka’s first innings – 109 runs between R Dravid and MK Pandey for the fourh wicket, 100 runs between R Dravid and A Verma for the sixth wicket, 107 runs between R Dravid and CM Gautham for the seventh wicket and 101 runs unfinished stand between R Dravid and SB Joshi for the eight wicket.

It is interesting to note that R Dravid has been one of the partners in four three figure partnerships. Perhaps this is the first occasion of a batsman being involved in four three figure stands in an innings in the Ranji Trophy Championship.
