Yuddha Kanda in Valmiki Ramayana has a part called Aditya Hridaya, in which Sage Agastya initiates Rama into Sun worship to invigorate his spirits while facing Ravana in the battlefield. We find references to Surya in the Mahabharata also.
The Vedas contain several verses about Lord Surya. References to Sun worship are also found in the Puranas. The origin of the worship of the Sun in India is thus several centuries old. Worshipping the ascending Sun, prostrating before the rising sun, commonly called the Suryanamaskar is one of the most famous forms of offering salutations
to the preserver of life. This is one of the practices handed over to us from several generations. Today Suryanamaskar is recognized world-wide as an important form of Yoga and one which has several health benefits.
Surya Upasana:
Sunrise dispels the darkness of the world. Similarly worship of the Sun is said to remove the darkness caused by ignorance and thereby bring about the light of wisdom. The word Upasana, derived from ‘Upa’ and ‘Asana’, literally means ‘Sitting near to’ and ‘Worship’. Sun is the store house of inexhaustible power and radiance. Hence the Surya Upasaka, the one who worships the Sun derives wisdom and is freed from ignorance.
Surya Upasana and Astrology:
The Yoga-Shastra says that Dharana and Samyama on Surya gives knowledge of the entire creation (universe).
Deshah bandhah chittasya dharana Dharana is the process whereby the mind holds on to some object, either in the
body, or outside the body, and keeps itself in that state. Samyama means complete control of the mind. It is said that Varahamihira Bhatta amassed excellence in Astrology (Jyotishya Shastra) from Suryaradhana.
