First Test – First day

India won the toss and elected to bat first. It was the first toss India won after losing the nine successive tosses.

New Zealand capped HK Bennett and K Williamson for this test. They became the 468^th and 469^th cricketers to represent New Zealand in tests. They became the 35^th and 36^th New Zealand cricketers to make their test debut.

V Sehwag and R Dravid added 237 runs for the second wicket in this test to provide the 50^th occasion of three figure partnership by Indian bastman against New Zealand. This stand also provides the 83^rd occasion of R Dravid involving in a three figure partnerships – a record of most three figure partnerships in the annals of test cricket.

V Sehwag completed 1000 runs in calendar year 2010 when he was on 96 during his knock of 173 in this test. At the end of the first day of this test, his aggregate stood at 1077, He became the second batsman to reach the milestone in 2010. SR Tendulkar {1270} is the other batsman.

237 runs were added for the second wicket between V Sehwag and R Dravid in this representing the record stand for the second wicket by Indian batsmen against New Zealand. Previous best was 204 runs between SM Gavaskar and S Amarnath at Auckland in Jan 1976.

R Dravid scored hundred in this game when he cut JS Patel’s fourth delivery of 78^th over of the innings and took his score from 98 to 100, He made 104 in this test. It was his 24^th hundred while batting at number three and 30^th hundred while batting at various positions.

R Dravid became the eighth batsman in the annals of test cricket to score 30 or more hundreds. Others are – SR Tendulkar {49}, RT Ponting {39}, JH Kallis {35}, SM Gavaskar {34}, BC Lara {32}, SR Waugh {32} and ML Hayden {30}

R Dravid’s hundred {104} in this game provide the 41^st occasion of an Indian batsman to score a hundred against New Zealand. It represents his fifth hundred against New Zealand – 190 at Hamilton in Jan 1999, 103* at Hamilton in Jan 1999, 144 at Mohali in Oct 1999, 222 at Ahmedabad in Oct 2003 and 104 at Ahmedabad in Nov 2010.

R Dravid became the fifth batsman to score five or more hundreds against New Zealand. Others are – Javed Miandad {07}, JH Kallis {05}, Shoaib Mohammad {05} and AR Border {05}

R Dravid now occupies the second place amongst the Indian cricketers who have played most tests against New Zealand. R Dravid has played his 25^th innings at Ahmedabad and he became the second Indian batsman to play 25 plus test innings against New Zealand after SR Tendulkar who has played 33 innings { ncluding his innings at Ahmedabad}

He became the second New Zealand cricketer to appear in 50 plus away tests after SP Fleming who has played 57 away tests. DL Vettori would became the 42^nd cricketer to play 50 plus away tests.
