Bangladesh vs South Africa

South Africa’s inviting the opposition to bat after winning the toss provides the 27th such instance in the ongoing edition of the World Cup. South Africa has done it on most occasions – four – including the current match.

When Boucher caught Tamim Iqbal for 38 off A Nel, it was the 50th catch by South African Wicket keeper in the World Cup. Other teams who have pouched fifty plus catches are Australia {89}, West Indies {84}, Pakistan {67}, India {60} and England {55}.

Javed Omar and Tamim Iqbal were concerned in a record stand of 42 runs for the first wicket against South Africa. Bangladesh and South Africa have met eight teams in ODIs.

Bangladesh posted its best total in ODIs while batting first when they made 251 for 8 wickets obliterating the previous best of 154 for 9 at Benoni in 2002-03. This total is also Bangladesh’s best in the World Cup. The previous best was 223 for 9 against Pakistan at Northampton in 1999. This is the first occasion when Bangladesh posted 250 plus runs in World Cup. These two are the only two occasions when Bangladesh posted 200 plus runs in the World Cup.

Mohammad Ashraful’s knock of 87 is Bangladesh’s best in World Cup obliterating Minhajul Abedin’s 68 not out against Scotland at Edinburgh in 1999. It is his second World cup. It is also eighth fifty by a Bangla batsman in World Cup.

Ashraful’s 87 is his eleventh fifty in ODIs. It is his second best innings after his 94 against against England at Nottingham in 2005

Andrew Nel who came in place of Andrew Hall captured five wickets conceding 45 runs, providing the second instance of a five wicket haul in World Cup after Langveldt’s 5 for 39 against Sri Lanka at Providence on 28.03.07 Nel’s five wicket haul is his career best figures. He has taken four wickets on two occasions earler.

His five wickets haul is the 25th occasion of a South African bowler capturing five plus wickets in One dayers. Nel’s 5 for 45 provide the 37th instance of a bowler capturing five plus wickets in World Cup.

Andrew Nel’s five for 45 went in vain providing the seventh instance of a five plus by a bowler going in vain in the World Cup. The other six are GJ Gilmour of Australia, N Kapildev of India, ALF deMel of Sri Lanka, Saqlain Mushtaq of Pakistan, van Vurren of Namibia and SE Bond of New Zealand.

With this win Bangladesh has won 36 games out of 155 ODIs it has played. 117 matches were lost and two games ended in no result. In the World Cup, Bangladesh has been victorious in just five games out of the 17 games it has played. The five games are against Scotland – by 22 runs – at Edinburg in 1999, vs Pakistan – by RSA at Northampton in 1999, vs Ind – by 5 wkts – Trinidad in 2007, Vs Bermuda – won by 07 wkts – Trinidad in 2007 and vs South Africa – by 67 runs at Providence in 2007

HH Gibbs registered his eighth fifty including hundreds in the World Cup. He is the 13th batsman to register fifty including hundreds in the World Cup.

Australia vs England

Bell and Pietersen added 140 runs for the third wicket in this game was three short of England’s best for the third wicket in World Cup. 143 run stand for the third wicket between GA Hick and G Thorpe against Holland at Peshawar in 1996 was England’s best stand for the third wicket in World Cup. The stand was England’s eighth three figure stand for the third wicket.

Bell’s 77 and Pieterson’s 104 provide the 20th instance of England batsman registering a fifty in World Cup. Only Australia {29} and West Indies {21} are ahead of England.

Pieterson’s 104 was his fourth fifty plus score in the current edition and emulates GC Smith of South Africa has registered four fifties.

Gilchrist becomes the fourth wicket keeper to have effected five stumping dismissals in the World Cup. A Flintoff was his fifth stumping victim. The other wicket keepers to have effected five or more dismissals in the World Cup are Moin Khan {7}, Kiran More {6} and KC Sangakkara {6}.

Pietersen’ 104 represents the 97th hundred in World Cup. It is the seventh hundred by an England batsman in the World Cup. The other five are DL Amiss {1975}, KWR Fletcher {1975}, AJ Lamb {1983}, DI Gower {1983}, GA Gooch {1987} and GA Hick {1996}.

It is the eighth hundred in the World Cup against Australia. The other seven batsmen are CH Lloyd {Win}. MD Crowe {NZl}, CZ Harris {NZl}, PA de Silva {Srl}, A Jadeja {Ind}, NC Johnson {Zim}, HH Gibbs {RSA}. Pieterson with his 104 earns the distinction of becoming the first England batsman to register a hundred against Australia in the World Cup.

Pieterson became the fifth batsman to aggregate 300 runs in the current edition. The other four are ML Hayden {395}, JH Kallis {360}, GC Smith {344}, K Peiterson {331} and ST Jayasuriya {303} as at the end of the England’s innings.

With three wickets in this innings, McGrath equalled the record for most wickets in the current edition held by Lasit Malinga of Sri Lanka who has to his credit 15 wickets.

Hayden became the first batsman to aggregate 400 runs in this edition when he was on five during his innings in this game. When Hayden hit Anderson to a boundary four, his second boundary of the innings, he took his boundary four aggregate to 43 in this edition and obliterated GA Smith’s 42 boundary fours which was a record for this edition in the matches played so far. At the end of his innings, he had scored 47 boundary fours {six fours in this innings}

RT Ponting obliterates the Australian record for most captaincy assignments in the World Cup held by Allan Border – 16. The match against England was Ponting’s 17th as captain in the World Cup. Ponting is now tied up with CH Lloyd who has led West Indies on 17 occasions. Only Azharuddin {23}, SP Fleming {22} and Imran Khan {22} are ahead of RT Ponting, leaving out CH Lloyd who has retired from the game.

AC Gilchrist with five fours in this game took his boundary fours aggregate in the World Cup to 120 and moves to the third position in the list of batsmen with most boundary fours. Only Sachin Tendulkar [189} and SP Fleming {126} are ahead of AC Gilchrist

With 86 runs in this game, RT Ponting extended his fifty plus scores to six in the World Cup as captain. This innings put him on par with Azharuddin who hitherto held the record for most World Cup fifties as captain – six fifties. RT Ponting has registered three hundreds and three fifties while leading Australia in the World Cup. Azharuddin has registered six fifties without a hundred while leading India.

RT Ponting while registering his sixth fifty as captain went past MD Crowe of New Zealand, SP Fleming of New Zealand, Imran Khan of Pakistan who had registered five World Cup fifties while leading their sides.

RT Ponting’s run out as captain provides the 34th instance of a captain run out in World Cup. The break up World Cup Editions wise read thus

2007 edition in the matches played so far has witnessed eight instances of captains run out – a record in this category. Seven instances of captains run out was witnessed in 1992 editon.

RT Ponting becomes the eighth captain to be dismissed run out in the World Cup after registering a fifty. He is the second Aussie captain after Ian Chappel to be dismissed run out after a World Cup fifty.

RT Ponting has been dismissed run out in World Cup on two occasions while he was leading Australia. Other captains to be dismissed run out on two or more occasions in World Cup are SP Fleming and Imran Khan {on three occasions}, AR Border, WJ Cronje, MD Crowe, Habibul Bashar and LRD Mendis {on two occasions}

RT Ponting and MJ Clarke added 112 runs for the third wicket providing Australia its 29th three figure stand for various wickets in World Cup – most by any team in World Cup. It was the ninth three figure stand for the third wicket by Australian batsmen. The nine occasions is a record for the third wicket in World Cup by a team. England batsmen are close behind with eight thee figure stands for the third wicket in World Cup

With this victory Australia has won 17 World Cups under RT Ponting in as many matches led by him giving him 100% record wins. As far Australian team is concerned it has won 18 matches in a row – right from the 1999 final under Steve Waugh to todays game {17 matches under RT Ponting}

Pieterson’s 104 was in a losing cause providing 16th instance of a batsman’s hundred going in vain in the World Cup. It was the first hundred by England batsman which went in a losing cause.

Ireland vs New Zealand

Stephen Fleming equalled the record held by Azhauddin for leading a country on most occasions in the World Cup. At the end of the game, Fleming and Azharuddin have led their countries on 23 occasions.

West Indies vs South Africa

West Indies capped KA Pollard in this game. He is the 134th cricketer to play for West Indies in ODIs. He is the sixth West Indian cricketer to make his One day debut in World Cup game. The others are IVA Richards, AME Roberts, CG Greenidge {1975}, PV Simmons {1987} and RL Powell {1999}. He is the 187th cricketer from all the countries to make one day debut in World Cup.

With L Bosman {RSA}, KA Pollard {Win} and DS Smith {Win} making their first appearance in World Cup, they become the 812th, 813th and 814th cricketers to play in the World Cup

West Indies act of inserting the opposition is the 19th instance in the World Cup and the fourth in the current edition. Of the 18 instances, they have won ten games and lost eight games. Of the three in the current edition, they have won one game and lost two games {create the link}

AB de Villers and JH Kallis were concerned in a three figure partnership which realized 170 runs for the second wicket in this game. This stand has the following accreditations – 169th three figure stand in the World Cup – 39th three figure stand for the second wicket in World Cup – fourth three figure stand for the second wicket by South Africa in the World Cup – tenth three figure partnership against West Indies in the World Cup.

170 run stand between AB de Villers and JH Kallis for the second wicket is a record second wicket stand by South African batsmen in World Cup. This stand obliterated the previous best of 116 runs stand between WJ Cronje and G Kirsten against UAE at Peshwar on 16.02.96.

It is the second three figure partnership for the second wicket against West Indies in the World Cup. The other partnership was the 166 runs partnership between Majid Khan and Zaheer Abbas at The Oval on 20.06.79. AB de Villers-JH Kallis with their stand of 170 runs obliterated the 166 runs partnership between Majid Khan and Zaheer Abbas at The Oval on 20.06.79. This stand provides the 38th three figure stand of 150 plus runs in the World Cup and tenth instance of 150 plus runs for the second wicket in the World Cup.

This stand is the third stand of 150 plus runs against West Indies in World Cup. The three stands are – 183 runs for the third wicket between Sanath Jayasuriya and Mahela Jayawardene at Providence on 01.04.07 : 170 runs for the second wicket between AB de Villers and JH Kallis at St George’s on 10.04.07 and 166 runs stand between Majid Khan and Zaheer Abbas at The Oval on 20.06.79

AB de Villers became the seventh batsman to register a hundred against West Indies in the World Cup. The other six are Ramiz Raja {1992}, DC Boon {1992}, RT Ponting {1996}, JM Davison {2003}, ML Hayden {2007} and ST Jayasuriya {2007}. It is interesting to note that in this edition of 2007, as many as three batsmen have registered hundreds against West Indies.

AB de Viller’s 146 is the tenth hundred by a South African batsman against West Indies in ODIs. The other nine hundreds are HH Gibbs {four hundreds}, JH Kallis {three hundreds}, GC Smith {one hundred} and HH Dippenaar {one hundred}. AB de Viller’s 146 is the highest score by a South African batsman against West Indies in ODIs, previous best being JH Kallis’s 139 at Johannesburg on 04.02.04

AB de Viller’s 146 provides the 98th hundred in World Cup and is the sixth hundred by South African batsman in the World Cup. The other five hundreds are G Kirsten, AC Hudson, HH Gibbs {two hundreds}, JH Kallis.

With three sixes in his innings of 61, HH Gibbs has taken his aggregate of World Cup sixes to 27, one behind the record for most sixes of 28 by RT Ponting. In his innings, HH Gibbs surpassed the 25 sixes held by Sanath Jayasuriya and Saurav Ganguly.

South Africa’s 356 for 4 in this game provides the tenth instance of a side posting 350 plus runs in the World Cup. South Africa is the only team to post 350 plus runs on two occasions in the World Cup and that too in a single edition of the World Cup. On 16.03.2007, South Africa had posted 353 for 3 in 40.0 overs against Netherlands at Basseterre.

South Africa’s 356 for 4 is its highest World Cup score obliterating its previous best of 353 for 3 in 40.0 overs against Netherlands at Basseterre on 16.03.07.

For the first time in the World Cup a team has posted 350 plus against West Indies and that credit goes to South Africa when it posted 356 for 4.

Four batsmen AB de Villers {146}, JH Kallis {81}, HH Gibbs {61 not out} and MV Boucher {52} registered fifties in this game providing the seventh instance of four batsmen registering fifties including hundreds in the World Cup. Of these six instances, South African batsman have achieved the feat twice. Apart from this occasion, the other occasion when four of their batsmen registered fifties was against Netherlands at St Kitts on 16.03.07 – GC Smith {66}, JH Kallis {128 not out}, HH Gibbs {72} and MV Boucher {75} were the batsmen who registered fifties in this game.

For the first time against West Indies four batsmen from the opposing side registered fifties in the World Cup

With four batsmen registering fifties in this game, 2007 edition has witnessed exact 100 instance of fifty plus scores by batsmen – 15 hundreds and 85 fifties

Boucher’s 52 provides the 51st instance of a Wicket keeper batsman registering fifty plus scores in the World Cup.

Four batsmen AB de Villers {146}, JH Kallis {81}, HH Gibbs {61 not out} and MV Boucher {52} registered fifties in this game providing the 25th instance of four batsmen registering fifties including hundreds in ODIs.

Apart from the current instance, the other occasion when four batsmen registred fifty plus scores against West Indies in ODIs is credited to India. Four Indian batsmen – G Gambhir (69}, SC Ganguly {98}, MS Dhoni {52 not out} and R Dravid {64} registerd fifies against West Indies at Nagpur on 21.01.07

RR Sarwan’s 92 provide the 36th World Cup Ninety. He is the fifth West Indian batsman {sixth instance} to register ninety in World Cup. The others are CG Greenidge, IVA Richards, RB Richardson {twice} and DL Haynes

AB de Villers’s 146 and RR Sarwan’s 92 provide the eighth instance of rival batsmen registering hundred and ninety in World Cup game.

IR Bradshaw and DB Powell added 41 runs for the ninth wicket which equalled the existing West Indian World Cup record for ninth wicket of 41 runs between WW Davis and MA Holding vs Australia at Leeds on 11.06.83.

DB Powell’s 48 not out is the highest score at No.10 position in the World Cup. It obliterated SA Dukanwala’s 40 not out for UAE vs South Africa on 16.02.96 and Sneden’s 40 for New Zealand vs Sri Lanka at Derby on 18.06.83

Bangladesh and England

Habibibul Bashar’s run out in this game provides the 35th instance of a captain’s run out in World Cup. It was the third time that Habibul Bashar was run out in a World Cup game and he is the third captain to be dismissed run out on three occasions. The other two are Imran Khan of Pakistan and SP Fleming of New Zealand.

Habibul Bashar becomes the only captain to be dismissed run out on three occasions in a single edition of the World Cup. He was dismissed run out in three games of the ongoing edition 2007. 2007 edition has witnessed nine instances of captain’s run out – a record – obliterating eight instances of 1992.

New Zealand and Sri Lanka

Stephen Fleming rewrote the World Cup record for most captaincy assignments. This game was his 24th as captain. Previous record was held by Mohd Azharuddin who lead India on 23 occasions.

When Chaminda Vaas had Stephen Fleming leg before the wicket- his 45th World Cup wicket – he overtook Javagal Srinath’s World Cup aggregate of 44 wickets. He became the third bowler in the history of World Cup to take 45 plus wickets, after G McGrath and Wasim Akram. At the end of the game, Vaas aggregate stood at 47.

Stephen Fleming failed to open the account in this game. This is the second instance of his failing to open the account when
he was leading in the World Cup – the first zero was at Southampton against West Indies in 1999. He becomes the seventh captain to register zero on two occasions in the World Cup. The other six are Azharuddin {India}, JM Brearley {Eng}, WJ Cronje {RSA|, Harilal Shah {EAF}, IH Romaine {Ber} and RGD Willis {Eng}

Stephen Fleming failed to open his account on 17 occasions in his ODI career – six occasions vs Srl : thrice each against RSA, Aus and Win ; once each against Pak and Zim. He has been dismissed without scoring with a lbw on seven occasions.

Stephen Fleming’s zero in this game was his 14th while leading New Zealand. The other captain who has been dismissed for zero on 14 occasions is Arjuna Ranatunga of Sri Lanka. They now hold the record jointly for the most zeros as captain.

Fleming has been dismissed for zero in his last four consecutive innings against Sri Lanka – quite interestingly he was dismissed leg before wicket to Chaminda Vaas in these innings.

Scott Styris’s 111 not out in this game provides the 99th hundred in World Cup. It was 11th hundred by a New Zealand batsman in World Cup.

Styris is the fourth New Zealand batsman to register two hundreds in World Cup. The other three are NJ Astle, SP Fleming and GM Turner. Styris’s had registered 141 against Sri Lanka at Bloemfontien in 2003.

Styris remains the only New Zealand batsman to register two hundreds against Sri Lanka in World Cup.

Styris’s 111 not out in this game provide the 15th instance of a hundred scored against Sri Lanka. It is also the fifth Nelson in the World Cup. The other batsmen who have scored Nelson in the World Cup are – SC Ganguly, Aamir Sohail, BC Lara and JM Davison.

Styris’s 111 not out going in vain provide the 17th instance of a batsman hundred ending up in a losing cause in the World Cup. Styris is the second batsman to witness both his World Cup hundreds going in vain. The other batsman is HH Gibbs whose two hundreds in the World Cup went in vain {101 vs Aus at Leeds in 1999 and 143 vs NZl at Johannesburg in 2003}

Styris’s 111 not out is the second Nelson in the World Cup which ended up on a losing cause. The other Nelson was Aamir Sohail’s 111 against South Africa at Karachi in 1996

Styris is the fourth batsman to register two hundreds against the same opposition. The other three are SC Ganguly {vs Ken}, SR Tendulkar {Vs Ken| and BC Lara {vs RSA}.

Styris’s both hundreds in the World Cup were against Sri Lanka and both hundreds went in vain – an unique instance in World Cup.

Sanath Jayasuriya with his 64 in this game registered his eighth World Cup fifty including hundreds {3 hundreds plus five fifties}. He became the second Sri Lankan batsman to register eight World Cup fifties including hundreds after PA de Silva { 2 hundreds plus six fifties}

Jayasuriya is the second Sri Lankan batsman to register 100 boundary fours in the World Cup and with five boundary fours in this game has now 106 boundary hits at the end of this game and needs one more boundary to equal the Sri Lankan record of 107 boundary fours held by PA de Silva. He hit one six in this game which took his World Cup sixes to 26. Only HH Gibbs {27} and RT Ponting {28} are ahead of Jayasuriya.

Muralitharan with three wickets in this game took his World Cup aggregate to 45. He is now fourth in the list of most wickets in the World Cup. Only G McGrath {60}, Wasim Akram {55} and C Vaas {47| are ahead of Muralitharan.

Vettori captured his 200th ODI wicket when he had Jayawardene caught by HMH Marshall for 15. Vettori became the 28th bowler in ODIs to capture 200 plus wickets. With the wicket of Chamara Silva {caught by Bond} he equalled the aggregate of 201 wickets by Chris Cairns. Only Chris Harris with 203 wickets is ahead of Vettori. Vettori is the third New Zealand bowler to aggregate 200 ODI wickets.

Kumar Sangakkar’s 69 not out in this game provide the 52nd instance of a wicket keeper fifty including hundreds in World Cup. It is the sixth fifty by a Sri Lankan Wicket keeper in World Cup. It is the third fifty by Sangakkara – a record for most fifties by a Sri Lankan wicket keeper in World Cup. RG de Alwis had registered two fifties in World Cup.

Sangakkara’s 69 not out provides the seventh instance of a fifty plus hundreds against New Zealand in World Cup. The other batsman to score fifty plus runs against New Zealand are DL Houghton {twice}, RD Jacobs {twice}, Taibu and Dravid. Sangakkara is the first Sri Lankan wicket keeper batsman to register a fifty against New Zealand in the World Cup.

Australia vs Ireland

Australia’s act of inserting the opposition in this game provides the 15th instance of Australia doing so in World Cup. Of the 15 instances, they have won nine games and lost six games.

Ireland’s 91 all out provide the 13th instance of a team all out for a total less than 100. Ireland is the third team to be dismissed for a total less than 100 in this edition. Bermuda {78 against Srilanka} and Zimbabwe {99 against Pakistan} are the other two teams.

Australia’s nine wicket win in this game provides the 14th instance of a team winning by nine wickets margin in the World Cup. As far Australia is concerned it is their second nine wicket win in the World Cup after their win against India at Centurion on 15.02.03.

Australia’s nine wicket win with 226 balls to spare provides the eighth win in World Cup with 200 plus balls remaining. It is Australia’s second victory with 200 plus balls remaining, the first being its win against Canada at Birmi
ngham in 199 with 204 balls remaining.

Hussey opened the innings for the first time in his One day career, while Symonds batted at No 3 for the sixth time in his one day career. The last occasion when Symonds batted at No 3 was way back in 2004 against Zimbabwe in Zimbabwe.

McGrath was awarded Man of the Match for his bowling performance in this game. This is the fifth occasion that McGrath got the Man of the Match Award in World Cup.

New Zealand vs South Africa

Stephen Fleming became the first captain to lead a team on 25 occasions in the World Cup. Today’s game was his 25th

New Zealand inserted the opposition after winning the toss in this game extended their act to 24 occasions. New Zealand has the record for inserting the opposition on most number of occasions. Out of 24 instances New Zealand has won 15 games and lost nine games. New Zealand has inserted the opposition on four occasions in this edition and has won all the four games. New Zealand is the only country to register 15 wins in the World Cup after inserting the opposition.

As far as South Africa is concerned, this is the eleventh occasion of losing the toss and asked to bat first. Of the ten occasions, they have won eight games and lost three games.

South Africa for the first time in World Cup lost its first two wickets with single digits on the board. This game was South Africa’s 38th World Cup game.

AB de Villers leads the table with four zeroes in the current edition of World Cup. He earns the distinction of scoring four zeroes in the single edition of the World Cup. The other batsmen who have registered four zeroes in the World Cup are KL Arthurton, K Srikkanth and Inzamam-ul-Huq. The record for most ducks in World Cup is five which is held jointly by NJ Astle and Izaz Ahmed

HH Gibbs with a six in this game now leads the table of most sixes with 14 sixes in the current edition. He overtook ML Hayden and ST Jayasuriya’s 13 sixes. HH Gibbs with a six in this game equalled the World cup record for most sixes – 28 held by RT Ponting of Australia

HH Gibbs completed 1000 World Cup runs in this game. He becomes the 11th batsman to reach the mile stone. Others are SR Tendulkar, RT Ponting, BC Lara, Javed Miandad, ST Jayasuriya, PA de Silva, IVA Richards, SP Fleming, SC Ganguly and ME Waugh. HH Gibbs is the sixth batsman to complete 1000 runs in the current edition.

HH Gibbs with his fifty in this innings registered his tenth fifty including hundreds becomes the second batsman to register ten fifty plus scores in the World Cup. The other batsman to register ten or more fifty plus scores is SR Tendulkar who has registered 17 fifty plus scores.

With two boundary fours in this game HH Gibbs has now 100 World Cup boundary fours to his credit and becomes the eighth batsman to hit 100 plus boundary fours in the World Cup. Others are SR Tendulkar {189}, SP Fleming {127}, AC Gilchrist {124}, BC Lara {120}, RT Ponting {113}, PA de Silva {107} and ST Jayasuriya {106}

JH Kallis with 463 runs to his credit leads the table for most runs in 2007 edition. Close behind is ML Hayden and SB Styris with 436 runs and 435 runs respectively.

Vettori with one wicket in this game took his total aggregate of ODI wickets to 202. Vettori needs two more wickets to become the bowler with most wickets for New Zealand. Chris Harris has an aggregate of 203 wickets.

Fleming completed 8000 runs in this game to become the 16th batsman who have reached the milestone of 8000 plus in ODIs. Others to aggregate 8000 plus runs are SR Tendulkar, ST Jayasuriya, Inzamam-ul-Huq, SC Ganguly, BC Lara, RT Ponting, R Dravid, M Azharuddin, PA de Silva, JH Kallis, AC Gilchrist, Saeed Anwar, DL Haynes, MS Atapattu and ME Waugh

Fleming’s fifty in this game is 38th fifty excluding hundreds as captain in ODIs. He obliterated the record of 37 fifties held by A Ranatunga. This fifty is Fleming’s 45th fifty including hundreds {07 C plus 38 F}. The record for most fifties including hundreds is in the name of RT Ponting who has registered 47 fifty plus scores {15 C plus 32 F}

With fifty in this game which was his sixth fifty plus score in the World Cup, Fleming equalled the record for most fifty plus scores by a captain in World Cup. Fleming has scored two hundreds and four fifties. Other captains to score six fifty plus scores in World Cup are RT Ponting { 03 hundreds and 03 fifties} and Azharuddin { 06 fifties}

Ireland winning the toss and electing to bat provide the eleventh instance of a side winning the toss and bat first in the current edition. This is the 42nd game in the ongoing edition and on 31 occasions captains have invited the opposition to bat first after winning the toss.

This is the second occasion when Ireland opted to bat first after winning the toss in the current edition. Ireland becomes the fourth team to bat first after winning the toss on two occasions. The other three teams are England, New Zealand and Sri Lanka.

Bangladesh capped Shahadat Hussain in this World Cup game and he becomes the 35th Bangladesh Cricketer to play in World Cup for Bangladesh.

Australia vs Sri Lanka

Chaminda Vaas and Muralitharan were rested for this game. Chaminda Vaas has missed two games against Australia out off the 36 games he has played. Muralitharan has missed nine games against Australia out of the 32 games he has played. Vaas and Muralitharan has not played together against Australia for the first time in ODIs and also in World Cup.

When Sanath Jayasuriya hit Bracken for a four of the last ball of his first over, he took his boundary fours aggregate in the World Cup to 108 and wrested the Sri Lankan record for most World Cup boundary fours held by PA de Silva who had an aggregate of 107 boundary fours. Other batsmen with 100 plus World Cup boundary fours are SR Tendulkar {189}, SP Fleming {133}, AC Gilchrist {124}, BC Lara {120}, RT Ponting {113} and HH Gibbs {100}

Kumara Sangakkara’s zero in this game provides the 43rd instance of a Wicket keeper failing to open the account in World Cup. His dismissal for zero provides the fourth instance and third Sri Lankan wicket keeper failing to open the account in World Cup. The other two wicket keepers are DSB Kuruppu and RS Kaluwitharana {twice}

Sangakkara has failed to open his account on seven occasions in ODIs including the one in this game. It is for the first time that he failed to open his account in the World Cup. It is also his first zero against Australia.

Sanath Jayasuriya with his six in this game took the total aggregate of sixes in the current edition to 13 and shares the record jointly for the second position with ML Hayden. HH Gibbs holds the record with 14 sixes.

Mahela Jayawardene’s 72 in this game provide the eighth instance of a Sri Lankan captain registering fifty plus scores in ODIs against Australia. His 72 in this game is the third highest individual innings after ST Jayasuriya’s 122 at Sydney on 09.01.03 and LRD Mendis’s 80 at Sydney on 23.01.85.

Mahela Jayawardene’s 72 is now the best by a Sri Lankan captain against Australia in World Cup. Previous best was 62 by PA de Silva at Adelaide on 07.03.92. Mahela Jayawadene and PA de Silva are the only two Sri Lankan captains to register fifties against Australia in World Cup.

Mahela Jaywardene and Chamara Silva posted 140 runs for the fourth wicket which is an ODI record for fourth wicket against Australia. The previous best was 121 between Mahela Jayawardne and KC Sangakkara at Dambulla on 20.02.04 and 121 between Russel Arnold and Mahela Jayawardene at Perth on 29.01.05.

Mahela Jayawardene’s 72 represents the highest score by a captain who has been dismissed stumped in the World Cup. The previous best was by GA Gooch of England who had made 65 before he was stumped against West Indies at Melbourne on 27.02.92. Jayawardene is the fourth captain who was dismissed stumped after scoring a fifty in World Cup. The other two are GA Smith {59} and WJ Cronje {57}

Adam Gilchrist now has six stumping dismissals to his credit in World Cup. The other two wicket keepers to have six stumping dismissals are Kiran More of India and Kumara Sangakkara of Sri Lanka. The record for most stumping dismissals is held by Moin Khan of Pakistan with seven stumping dismissals.

Sri Lanka’s 226 all out provide the 14th instance of a team batting first and all out in the 2007 edition. Sri Lanka have been all out on most occasions – three. On all the three occasions they have been all out in the 50th over.

Nathan Bracken’s 4 for 19 provides the 15th instance of a bowler capturing four wickets conceding 19 runs in ODIs. Bracken is the fifth Aussie bowler to return with figures of 4 for 19. The other four are MHN Walker, SP O’Donnel, SK Warne and SCG MacGill.

Nathan Bracken becomes the second bowler to return with figures of 4 for 19 in the World Cup. The other bowler is Manoj Prabhakar of India who had taken 4 for 19 against Zimbabwe at Mumbai on 17.10.87.

Of the ten Australian bowlers who have captured exact four wickets in World Cup, Nathen Bracken’s figures of 4 for 19 is the most economical bowling figures. It is an improvement over Brad Hogg’s 4 for 27 against Netherlands at Basseterre on 18.03.07.

AC Gilchrist and ML Hayden were concerned in 76 run stand for the first wicket. This is the 25th occasion that this pair has put on fifty plus partnership in ODIs. They equalled the DC Boon and G R Marsh’s record of 25 partnerships of fifty plus runs. AC Gilchrist and ML Hayden went past the record of 24 partnerships of fifty plus runs of DL Haynes and CG Greenidge.

AC Gilchrist and ML Hayden now have 40 partnerships of 50 plus runs partnerships including the century partnerships {25 F plus 15 C}. They rewrote the previous record of 39 fifty plus runs stand held by DL Haynes and CG Greenidge {15 C plus 24 F}.

Jayawadene’s 72 was his fourth fifty as captain in this edition and he emulated GA Smith and SP Fleming who have registered four fifties while leading their sides. RT Ponting joined this company later during Aussie innings when he scored his fourth fifty 66 not out.

Jayawardne and RT Ponting registered fifties – 72 and 66 not out – in this game providing the seventy instance of rival skippers registering fifties in the World Cup.

RT Ponting now holds the record for most fifties as captain in the World Cup. With his fifty in this game he has seven fifty plus scores. Others to have six fifties are Azharuddin and Stephen Fleming.

With the winning hit of a six RT Ponting now holds the record for most sixes in the World Cup. He now has 29 sixes and wrested the record from HH Gibbs who has 28 sixes to his credit.
