DW Steyn conceded 105 runs in the second innings of this test providing the 16th occasion of an South African bowler conceding 100 plus runs in an innings against India.

DW Steyn has conceded 100 plus runs in an innings against India on three occasions – 4 for 103 runs at Chennai in Mar 2008 : 1 for 115 at Kolkata in Feb 2010 and 4 for 105 at Centurion in Dec 2010. PL Harris and M Ntini are the other two bowlers who have conceded 100 plus runs in an innings on four occasions against India.

SR Tendulkar’s 111 not out in this test provide the 13th occasion of a Nelson by a batsman in a losing cause in the annals of test cricket. It is the second occasion of a 111 not out going in vain. The first occasion was 111 not out by M Leyland of England vs Australia at Melbourne in Jan 1937.

R Dravid {111 vs South Africa at Chennai in Mar 2008 and 111* vs Bangladesh at Dhaka in Jan 2010} and SR Tendulkar {111 vs South Africa at Johannesburg in Nov 1992 and 111* vs South Africa at Centurion in Dec 2010} are the two Indian batsman who have scored Nelson on two occasions.

R Dravid {111 at Chennai in Mar 2008} and SR Tendulkar {111 at Johannesburg in Nov 1992 and 111* at Centurion in Dec 2010} are the two Indian batsman who have scored Nelson against South Africa on three occasions.

SR Tendulkar’s 111 not out in this test provide the seventh occasion of a batsman scoring Nelson against South Africa. SR Tendulkar is the only batsman to score two Nelsons against South Africa.

R Dravid of India, AR Morris of Australia, Taufeeq Umar of Pakistan, SR Tendulkar of India, ME Waugh of Australia and GM Wood of Australia are the six batsmen who have scored Nelsons on two occasions in the annals of test cricket.

SR Tendulakr and MS Dhoni added 172 runs for the seventh wicket in India’s second innings which gave SR Tendulkar his 81st three figure partnership. He went past RT Ponting of Australia who has 80 three figure partnerships to his credit. Only R Dravid of India with 85 three figure partnerships is ahead of SR Tendulkar in terms of three figure partnerships.

SR Tendulkar has partnered three figure partnerships for the seventh wicket on three occasions – 128 runs with KS More vs New Zealand at Napier in Feb 1990 : 160* runs with M Prabhakar vs England at Manchester in Aug 1990 and 172 runs with MS Dhoni vs South Africa at Centurion in Dec 2010.

Only SR Waugh of Australia has partnered in four three figure partnerships for the seventh wicket – one more than SR Tendulkar. SR Waugh’s four century stands for the seventh wicket are – 147 with MG Hughes vs England at Leeds in Jun 1989 : 142* with SK Warne vs New Zealand at Brisbane in Dec 1993 : 117 with PR Reifell vs Sri Lanka at Adelaide in Jan 1996 and 108 with SK Warne vs India at Adelaide in Dec 1999.

India scored 454 for 8 in the third innings of this test providing the eleventh occasion of India scoring 450 plus runs in the third innings of a test match and the first such occasion against South Africa.

R Dravid completed 12000 runs when he was on 43 in India’s second innings of this test. He was dismissed for 43. He became the third batsman in the annals of test cricket to aggregate 12000 runs. Others are SR Tendulkar {14509} and RT Ponting {12333}

SR Tendulkar was playing his 175th test – most by any cricketer in the annals of test cricket. He made his 175th appearance most memorable by scoring 50th test hundred in the second innings of this test. At the end of the fourth day of this test, he had scored 107 not out.

AB de Villiers scored 100 of his 129 in 75 balls providing the eleventh occasion of a batsman scoring the first hundred of their innings in 76 or less than 76 deliveries in the annals of test cricket {where number of balls are known} He is the first South African batsman to perform the feat and thus holds the record for fastest test hundred by a South African in terms of balls faced.

AB de Villiers’s 129 in this test represents his 12th test hundred and 35th fifty.

JD Unadkat returned with figures of none for 101 in this test providing the 19th occasion of a bowler conceding 100 plus runs without a wicket on his debut. He is the third Indian bowler to suffer such an ignominy.
