Australian openers SR Watson and SM Katich scored 93 and 98 respectively in the first innings of the first test against Pakistan at Melbourne providing the fourth occasion of both the openers registering nineties in an innings in the annals of test cricket.

Second occasion – VVS Laxman {95} and NS Sidhu {97}Indian openers in the first innings of the test match between India and Australia at Kolkata in 1997-98

Third occasion – Mohammad Hafeez {95} and Imran Farhat {91} – Pakistan openers in the first innings of the test match between England and Pakistan at Lord’s in 2006

RT Ponting of Australia registered his 50th test half century when he scored 57 in the first innings against Pakistan at Melbourne in the first test of 2009/10 test series.

Ponting became the seventh batsman in the world to register 50 fities in a test innings. Others are AR Border of Australia {63}, R Dravid of India {58}, SR Tendulkar of India {54}, S Chanderpual of West Indies {53}, JH Kallis of South Africa {52} and SR Waugh of Australia {50}.

Ponting is the third Australian batsman to achieve the feat of scoring 50 fifties in a test innings. Other two are AR Border {63} and SR Waugh {50}. AR Border with 63 fifties to his credit holds the record for most fifties. Ponting’s 50 fifties are listed below

WU Tharanga was dismissed by the first ball of the match providing the 54th occasion of a batsman dismissed by the first ball of the match in the history of one day games. It was the third occasion for Zaheer Khan to dismiss a batsman by the first ball of the match. The other two occasions are – MS Sinclair of New Zealand at Col-RPS in 2001 and ST Jayasuriya of Sri Lanka at Col-RPS in 2002-03

Zaheer Khan became the fifth bowler in the history of one day games to dimisss a batsman by the first ball of the match on three or more occasions. Others are WPUJC Vaas {05}, Wasim Akram {04}, CJ McDermott {03} and SM Pollock {03}

The match was abandoned after 23.3 over due to the poor state of the pitch when Sri Lanka’s score card read 83 for 5.

ST Jayasuriya hit five fours in this game and completed 1500 boundary fours in one day games. He became the second batsman to score 1500 boundary fours in one dayers after SR Tendulkar of India who has 1901 boundary fours to his credit.

TM Dilhan completed 1000 runs in calendar year 2009 when he was on 20 during his knock of 20 on this game. At the end of the game he has an aggregate of 1000 runs. He has already completed 1000 runs in tests in the calendar year 2009. His aggregate is tests is 1097 from 11 matches

It is interesting to note that out of these seven batsmen who have achieved the feat, four are Sri Lankans – PA de Silva, ST Jayasuriya, DPMD Jayawardene and TM Dilshan

TM Dilshan has to credit 1000 plus runs in 2009 in T20 games – 1086 from 37 mat hes. Thus TM Dilshan has an unique distinction of scoring 1000 runs in 2009 in Tests, ODIs and also T20 games, a feat which has no parallel.

TM Dilshan became the sixth batsman to aggregate 1000 runs in the calendar year 2009. Other five are – MS Dhoni {1198}, RT Ponting {1198}, MEK Hussey {1166}, H Masakadza {1087} and SR Watson {1013}.

India capped S Tyagi in this match. He is the 179th Indian cricketer to appear in one day games and 21st Indian cricketer to make his one day debut against Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka capped M Pushpakumar for this game. He became the 142nd cricketer to appear for Sri Lanka in one day games and 27th Sri Lankan cricketer to make his one day debut against India.

WU Tharanga was dismissed by the first ball of the match providing the 54th occasion of a batsman dismissed by the first ball of the match in the history of one day games.
