First Test – South Africa vs India at Centurion in Dec 2010 : First Day’s play

India capped JD Unadkat for this game. He became the 266^th cricketer to represent India in tests. He is the 13^th Indian cricketer to make his test debut against South Africa.

South Africa won the toss and elected to field first in this test providing the third occasion of South Africa inserting India. The other two occasions are – at Port Elizabeth in Dec 1992 and at Bloemfontein in Nov 2001.

V Sehwag scored duck in this game providing the 41^st occasion of an Indian batsman scoring zero against South Africa. His duck provides the sixth occasion of an Indian opening batsman scoring duck against South Africa. His duck in this game represents his second duck against South Africa as an opening batsman. The first such occasion was at Durban in Dec 2006, V Sehwag with two ducks became the second opening batsman to score two ducks against South Africa. WV Raman was the other opening batsman to score two ducks.

V Sehwag collected his 12^th duck of his test career. It was his 11^th duck as an opening batsman. Other Indian opening batsmen who have collected 11 or more ducks are – P Roy {14} and SM Gavaskar {11}

R Dravid completed 9500 runs when he was on 7 during his knock of 14 in the first innings of this match while batting at number three. At the end of the first innings his aggregate stood at 9511 runs. He earned the distinction of becoming the second batsman in the annals of test cricket to total 9500 plus runs while batting at number three. RT Ponting with 9825 runs is the other batsman to score 9500 runs {as on 16.12.10}

R Dravid who had an aggregate of 11943 runs prior to the start of the test, went past BC Lara’s 11955 runs when he was on 11 runs during his knock of 14 in the first innings. Now he stands third in the list of most run getters in test cricket – SR Tendulkar {14402} and RT Ponting {12332} and R Dravid {11957} {as on 16.12.10}

At the end of his first innings R Dravid has an aggregate of 151 boundary fours against South Africa. He became the third Indian batsman to total 150 plus boundary fours. Other two are – SR Tendulkar {208} and V Sehwag {167}

SR Tendulkar was dismissed leg before wicket for 36 in the first innings of this test providing the 52^nd occasion of his dismissal leg before wicket in his test career. He has been dismissed leg before wicket on most occasions. GA Gooch {50} is the other batsman to be dismissed leg before wicket on 50 plus occasions.

M Morkel captured his 100^th test wicket when he had R Dravid leg before wicket for 14 in India’s first innings. At the end of the first day, M Morkel has an aggregate of 102 wickets. He became the 13^th South African bowler to capture 100 plus test wickets. Harbhajan Singh was dismissed run out in this test providing the 18^th occasion of an Indian batsman run out against South Africa. He was dismissed run out for the second occasion against South Africa. The other occasion was at Port Elizabeth in Nov 2001. He became the fourth Indian batsman to be dismissed run out on two or more occasions. Others are – MA Azharuddin {03}, A Kumble {02} and J Srinath {02}

V Sehwag, I Sharma and S Sreesanth scored zeroes in India’s first innings. With these three zeros, Indian batsman scoring zeroes against South Africa swelled to 43.

V Sehwag, I Sharma and S Sreesanth scored zeroes in India’s first innings providing the fourth occasion of three or more batsman scoring zeros in an innings.

South Africa-India Test series highlights

South Africa and India have played nine series prior to this series. India has been victorious in two series – 1996-97 and 2004-05 – both series played in India. South Africa on the other hand has won five series – 1992-93 series played in South Africa, 1996-97 series played in South Africa, 1999-00 series played in India, 2001-02 series played in South Africa and 2006-08 series played in South Africa . A Kumble {84} and J Srinath {64} are the two Indian bowlers to capture 50 plus wickets against South Africa. Amol Muzumdar – Highest Run getter in Ranji Trophy – by Sri C Keshavamurthy

Amol Mazumdar became the first batsman to complete 8000 runs in the history of Ranji Trophy when on 25 during his innings of 79 for Assam in the 2^nd innings against Railways in November 2010. He had represented Mumbai in 109 matches till 2009/10. He represented Assam from 2010-11. He has played 13 matches for Assam. As on 14.12.10 he has an aggregate of 8224 runs from 122 matches. Highlights of Karnataka/Baroda Ranji Trophy match held at Mysore : 08-11^th December 2010 : Match Drawn

Karnataka faltered in maintaining its winning streak by adopting defensive tactics and walking on a safety path despite being in the driver’s seat at the end of the third day’s play at Mysore in the match against Baroda, and allowed the match to peter out into a draw on the fourth day on 11.12.2010.

This is the first drawn match between the two teams, as out of the previous five matches played Karnataka had won four and lost only one. This was the first match played between the two teams at a mofussil centre in Karnatala

Baroda batsmen could not muster a single fifty in the match although as many as six fifty plus scores were recorded by the Karnataka players. The highest individual score for Baroda was recorded by RK Solanki who made unbeaten 46 in the 2^nd innings.

Robin Uthappa, who had completed 3000 runs in the Ranji Trophy in the previous match against Himachal Pradesh at Dharmasala and scored 53 of 78 balls. This was his 14^th half century and 23^rd fifty in the Ranji Trophy of his 47 match career

CM Gautam, after missing the match against Himachal Pradesh, due to injury, came back to score his second half century – 57 – in 2010/11 season. With his score of 57 he has now a tally of five fifties in 15 matches. Out of these five fifties, four are centuries with a highest of 158 against Orissa at Bangalore

CM Gautam also completed 1000 runs in first class cricket when on four in his score of 12 in the second innings of the match. At the end of the match against Baroda his tally in Ranji Trophy stood at 794 runs in 15 matches at 39.70

Ganesh Satish, who had captained in the earlier two matches and who had failed to register a single fifty in his last seven innings in 2010/11 (after making 55 against Punjab at Mohali) scored 76 in the second innings. This was his fifth half century apart from two centuries, in a career spanning 15 matches.

Ganesh Satish too completed 1000 runs in first class cricket when he reached 54 during his innings of 76 in the second innings. He has now accumulated 963 runs in 15 Ranji Trophy matches at a healthy average of 41.86.

Amit Verma scored his fourth (most fifties by Karnataka player in 2010/11) half century score in 2010/11 when he made 80 in the second innings. This was his fourth half century and seventh fifty 16 matches. He has now scored 915 runs in Ranji Trophy at 43.57

Stuart Binny, who was instrumental in architecting Karnataka’s victory against Himachal Pradesh, continued his fine form to score 70 in the second innings. This is his third half century in addition to his maiden century knock of 109 against Himachal Pradesh. He was playing in his 22^nd match.

Vinaykumar, skipper of Karnataka, who had missed the earlier two matches as he had been drafted for the NZ series, came back to lead Karnataka. He made an unbeaten 50 in the second innings – which is his third half century in 47 Ranji Trophy matches.

Sunil Joshi captured his 600^th victim in first class cricket when he dismissed MY Vahora in Baroda’s first innings. He was playing in his 157^th first class match. His 600 first class wickets comprises of 41 in tests, 6 in Irani Trophy, 58 in Duleep Trophy, 464 in Ranji Trophy and 31 in other first class matches, as at the end of third day’s play on 11.12.2010.

Joshi is currently placed third in the list of highest wicket takers in the Ranji Trophy with 465 wickets at the end of the match against Baroda. Only Rajinder Goel with 637 wickets and S Venkataraghavan with 530 wickets are ahead of him in the Ranji Trophy.

BRM Taylor was dismissed for a duck in this game providing the 40^th occasion of a Zimbabwe batsman dismissed for a duck against Bangladesh. His duck provides the eighth occasion of a Zimbabwe opening batsman scoring zero against Bangladesh.

BRM Taylor’s duck in this game represents his sixth duck of his one day career. He became the third Zimbabwe batsman to be dismissed for a duck against Bangladesh in one day games. Other two are – GW Flower at Harare on 08.04.01 and S Matsikenyeri at Chittagong on 24.01.05

BRM Taylor became the second Zimbabwe opening batsman to be dismissed run out for a duck after S Matsikenyeri {at Chittagong on 24.01.05}

T Taibu scored 64 in this game providing the 59^th occasion of a Zimbabwe batsman scoring a fifty against Bangladesh. His knock also represents the eleventh occasion of a Zimbabwe wicket keeper batsman scoring a fifty against Bangladesh.
