Never before in the history of Sri Lankan test cricket, four batsmen aggregated 1000 plus runs in a calendar year. In 2009, they were destined for this feat. At the end of the fourth day’s play in the test match between India and Sri Lanka at Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai, four Sri Lankan batsmen aggregated 1000 plus runs in 2009. TM Dilshan {1097}, M Jayawardne {1194}, TT Samaraweera {1234} and KC Sangakkara {1079} take the credit of accomplishing the feat for the first time in the history of Sri Lankan test cricket .

Ric Finlay, one of the famed statistician of Australia and a renowned member of Association of Cricket Statisticians and Historians, has worked out a method – not commonly used by Statisiticians to know Virender Sehwag’s place in the history. He has adopted “mean” with a qualification of at least 17 hundreds and found that Virender Sehwag occupies the first place according to his calculations.

V Sehwag, India’s dashing openers occupies the first place among the batsmen considering the “mean” into account. He has scored 3214 runs with 17 hundreds {his career not outs are not taken into account} and the mean works out to 189.06 which is the highest mean among the 45 batsmen of various era.

The aggregate runs of 671 runs conceded by four bowlers at Mumbai-BS against India remains the highest run aggregate by Sri Lankan bowlers. The previous best was 561 runs against India at Kanpur in Nov 09, the second test of the ongoing series.

KC Sangakkara’s 133 not out is his 20^th century while batting number three. He became the fourth batsman in the annals of test cricket to score 20 plus centuries while batting at number three. Others are RT Ponting {31}, R Dravid {22}, DG Bradman {20},

KC Sangakkara’s 133 not out provide the 503^rd occasion of a captain registering a test hundred in the annals of test cricket. Sangakkara’s 133 not out provide the 29^th occasion of a Sri Lankan captain registering a hundred in a test innings and it represents the fourth hundred by a Sri Lankan captain against India. KC Sangakkara with his 133 not out became the first Sri Lankan captain to score a hundred on Indian soil.

V Sehwag was finally dismissed for 293 – caught and bowled by M Muralithran. Muralitharan with this caught and bowled has equaled A Kumble’s record of most caught and bowled dismissals – 35

V Sehwag became the fourth batsman in the annals of test cricket to be dismissed for scores between 290 and 299. The other three are – MD Crowe of New Zealand for 299 vs Sri Lanka at Wellington in Jan 91, IVA Richards of England for 291 against England at The Oval in Aug 76 and RR Sarwan of West Indies for 291 against England at Bridgetown in Feb 09

Tendulkar was bowled for 53 in the first innings providing the 42^nd occasion of his getting bowled in a test innings. It is an Indian record for a batsman who has been dismissed bowled on most occasions. R Dravid and GR Viswanath have been dismissed bowled on 41 occasions.

SR Tendulakar’s 42 occasions of bowled dismissals put him on par with JH Kallis of South Africa who also has been dismissed bowled on 42 occasion, Only AR Border of Australia {53} and JR Reid of New Zealand {44} have been dismissed bowled on more occasions than SR Tendulkar and JH Kallis.

SR Tendulkar’s 53 in this innings was his 24^th fifty on home soil which puts him on par with R Dravid who also has 24 fifties on home soil.

SR Tendulkar’s 53 in this innings represent the 97^th fifty of his test career – the most fifties scored by a batsman in the annals of test cricket. AR Border {90}, RT Ponting {87} and R Dravid {86} are the other batsmen who have scored 85 plus fifties.

R Dravid’s 74 provide the 58^th half century of his test career and only AR Border with 63 half centuries is ahead of R Dravid in terms of half centuries.

SR Tendulkar’s 53 represent his 12^th fifty against Sri Lanka. He now shares the series record for most fifties which is 12 with R Dravid and DPMD Jayawardene

This test was SR Tendulakar’s 22^nd appearance against Sri Lanka and holds the Indian as welll as the series record for most appearances in the series. M Muralitharan with 21 appearances holds the record for most appearances by Sri Lankan cricketer in the series

SR Tedulkar at the end of his innings in this test, has an aggregate of 1605 runs which is a record for most runs by an Indian batsman and also the series record.

HMRKB Herath conceded 240 runs in this test providing 26^th occasion of a bowler conceding 200 plus runs in a test innings.

HMRKB Herath conceded 240 runs in this test which represents the most expensive bowling in a test innings against India. JJ Kreza of Australia with 8 for 215 on his test debut at Nagpur had conceded most runs against India prior to Herath

Herath is the second Sri Lankan bowler to concede 200 plus runs in a test innings, after M Muralitharan who had figures of 2 for 224 against Australia at Perth in Dec 95. Herath’s figures of 3 for 240 represent the most expensive bowler by a Sri Lankan bowler in a test innings

Muralitharan’s 4 for 195 in this test represent his second most expensive figures of his test career in terms of runs conceded. His figures of 2 for 224 against Australia at Perth in Dec 95 remain the most expensive bowling figures of his test career.

India’s 726 for 9 declared in this test represent its highest team total. The previous best was 705 for 7 declared against Australia at Sydney in Jan 04. These are the only tow occasions of India posting a total of 700 plus runs.

Indian innings contained six fifties – M Vijay {87}, V Sehwag {293}, R Dravid {74}, SR Tendulkar {53}, VVS Laxman {62} and MS Dhoni {100*} providing the 29^th occasion of a test innings containing six or more fifties in the annals of test cricket.

Indian batsmen are involved in such a feat on five occasions including the one in the test at Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai. The other five occasions were – against New Zealand at Kanpur in Nov 76, against Australia at Kolkata in Mar 98, against England at The Oval in Aug 07 and against Pakistan at Kolkata in Nov 07.

The total aggregate of six batsmen who have scored fifties is 669 and remains the highest aggregate in all the five occasions accomplished by Indian batsmen. The previous highest aggregate was 598 against Pakistan at Kolkata in Nov 97.

The total aggregate of six batsmen who have scored fifties is 669 and remains the second highest aggregate in all the 29 occasions accomplished in the annals of test cricket by Indian batsmen. The highest aggregate is 729 achieved by England batsman against West Indies at Kingston in Apr 1930.

The aggregate of 729 achieved by six England batsman who registered fifties against West Indies at Kingston in Apr 1930 contained a triple hundred 325 scored by A Sandham who opened the innings for England. In India’s aggregate of 669 against Sri Lanka at Mumbai {BS} when six batsmen scored fifties, V Sehwag scored 293. These are the only two occasions of a batsmen scoring more than 250 runs in four occasions of 600 plus aggregate detailed in the next paragraph.

There are four occasions of aggregates of 600 plus runs when six batsmen have scored fifties in a test innings. They are – 729 by England batsmen against West Indies at Kingston in Apr 30, 669 by Indian batsmen against Sri Lanka at Mum-BS in Dec 09, 645 by Pakistan batsmen against India at Lahore in Dec 89 and 618 by West Indies batsmen against New Zealand at Wellington in Feb 95

MS Dhoni scored 100 not out in this test which was his third test hundred. Other two hundreds are – 148 vs Pakistan at Lahore in Jan 06 and 110 vs Sri Lanka at Ahmedabad in Nov 09.

MS Dhoni’s 100 not out in this test represent the 13^th occasion of an Indian wicket keeper scoring a hundred in a test innings. MS Dhoni with three hundreds to his credit has registered most hundred by an Indian wicket keeper batsman. BK Kunderan, FM Engineer and SMH Kirmani are the other three wicket keepers who had scored two test hundreds.

MS Dhoni’s 100 not out in this test represent the second hundred by a wicket keeper batsman at Mumbai-BS. FM Engineer with his 121 against England Feb 73 was the other wicket keeper batsman to score a hundred at Mumbai-BS

MS Dhoni’s 100 not out represent the 156^th occasion of a wicket keeper batsman scoring a hundred in the annals of test cricket. His knock also provides the eighth occasion of wicket keeper batsman scoring a hundred against Sri Lanka.

MS Dhoni and A Flower are the two wicket keeper batsmen to register hundreds against Sri Lanka on two occasions. MS Dhoni’s two hundreds are – 110 at Ahmedabad in Nov 09 and 100 not out at Mumbai BS in Dec 09. A Flower’s two hundreds are at – 105* at Col-SSC in Jan 98 and 129 at Harare in Nov 99.

MS Dhoni’s 100 not out in this test provide the ninth occasion of a captain-cum-wicket keeper registering a hundred in a test innings.

MS Dhoni became the second captain-cum-wicket keeper batsman to register two or more hundreds in the annals of test cricket, other being A Flower of Zimbabwe who has scored three hundreds. MS Dhoni’s two hundreds are – 110 vs Sri Lanka at Ahmedabad in Nov 09 and 100 not out vs Sri Lanka at Mumbai BS in Dec 09. A Flower’s three hundreds are at – 156 vs Pakistan at Harare Jan 95, 129 vs Sri Lanka at Harare in Nov 99 and 113* vs West Indies at Trinidad in Mar 00.

At the end of the third day of this test, Muralitharan has an aggregate of 97 wickets against India which is the most against India surpassing Imran Khan’s 94 wickets.

Bharat Raj writes on Adcock and Heine in a special article for our visitors. HR Gopala Krishna has certain inputs to this article

Right from the inception of test cricket in 1877, it is a known fact that the fast bowlers have hunted in pairs – Larwood and Voce, Trueman and Statham {though for a brief period England had the services of the lightning quick bowler Tyson} Mohammad Nissar and Amar Singh, Thomson and Lillee, Imran Khan and Sarfraz Nawaz, to name a few pairs of the yester years. McGrath and Gillespie, Wasim Akaram and Waqar Younis, Ambrose and Walsh along with Bishop for a brief period, Shaun Pollock and Allan Donald and to a lesser extent Gough and Caddick are the pairs which hunted the batsmen in eighties and nineties.

There are always exceptions to any rule and this can be applied to West Indies team which had four great fast bowlers in late seventies and mid eighties in Malcolm Marshall, Andy Roberts, Joel Garner and Michael Holding.

New Zealand and India in the eighties relied on Richard Hadlee and Kapil Dev to get early wickets. Kapil Dev and Manoj Prabhakar formed a reliable hunting pair for India in these years. Yes, the Indian team had four very good spinners in the past like Chandra, Bedi, Prasanna and Venkat, but we are talking about quick bowlers hunting in pairs.

One more pair that can be added to the list can be NAT Adcock and Peter Heine. Both played together in only twelve tests but they did make their impact in international cricket.

NAT Adcock made his first-class debut for Transvaal against Natal in Durban in 1952-53. He played for the first time for South Africa at home against New Zealand at Durban in 1953-54 and in his first series itself he showed his mettle by capturing 24 wickets. He had two five wicket hauls in his debut series – 5 for 43 in the second innings at Jo’burg in Dec 53 and 5 for 45 in second innings at Jo’burg in Jan 54.

NAT Adcock’s devastating five wickets haul – 5 for 43 in the second innings at Jo’burg in Dec 53 ensured South Africa’s win by 132 runs. He had a match haul of 8 for 87 in this test {3 for 44 and 5 for 43}. His five for 45 in second innings at Jo’burg in Jan 54 ensured South Africa’s victory in this test by nine wickets

It was the series in which he hit Sutcliffe on his head {in the test at Jo’burg in the first innings in Dec 53} which showed that NAT Adcock was a fearsome bowler. Sutcliffe did come back and scored a brave 80 not out against the bowling attack which comprised of NAT Adcock, DEJ Ironside, ARA Murray and TJ Tayfield .

It was said to be test cricket at its best as there was a fearsome quick bowler bowling very quick and on the other end there was a batsman who was willing to fight it out though he was injured.

NAT Adcock was the first South African pace bowler to capture 100 wickets in tests. He finished with his test career with 104 wickets at a miserly average of 21.10 runs per wicket.

NAT Adcock reportedly had a smooth rhythmic action which put a minimum tax on his energy. He is said to have the ability to use his height to get awkward bounce from a good length.

Adcock was named as Wisden Cricketer of the year 1961. Wisden has this to say on Adcock’s run up and action.

“Unlike many fast bowlers NAT Adcock does not employ a pronounced movement of the body at the point of delivery. He bowls without interruption in the course of his run, swinging his arm on a trunk that is virtually upright — like a sudden gust turning a light windmill”

He continued to have success as he had a great time against England in 1955 as well as in 1956/57 and did reasonably well against Australia in 1957/58. He had his share of injuries but in 1960 he proved his detractors wrong by succeeding in England and that was the time when South Africa had troubles with the other quick bowler called Griffen as he was no balled for chucking and was withdrawn from the series. It didn’t deter NAT Adcock from taking 26 wickets in that series. Yes, he did have his critics who always thought that he had a tendency to bowl short but looking at his records and reading about what others had to say about him there is no doubt that he would get a place in the South African all time team.

If we talk about his hunting partner for 12 tests, Peter Heine it is said that he wasn’t quick or fearsome like NAT Adcock, nevertheless was said to be a lion-hearted bowler. He supported NAT Adcock well against England in 1955 and 1956/57 and against Australia in 1957/58. Actually the records show that Heine did better than NAT Adcock in 1957/58 against Australia.

Former South African bowler Peter Pollock on Heine said thus – “Adcock was quicker but Heine put the heat into the combination.”

The performance of both NAT Adcock and Heine helped South Africa to challenge England in 55 as well as in 1956/57. Actually in 1956/57 at home South Africa were able to draw the series against a pretty good England side. The opposition had the likes of Statham, Tyson, Cowdrey, May, Wardle and Laker in their line up. One has to add that South Africa also had the services of perhaps their greatest spinner in Tayfield who had a great series with the ball in 1956/57 against England.

Both NAT Adcock and PS Heine played their last series against the Kiwis in 1962. Yes, NAT Adcock and PS Heine didn’t play too many tests together but when they played together, the opponent batsman had greater worries in negotiating these quickies.

Peter Heine made his test debut against England at Lord’s in 1955 and on his first day of his international career captured five wickets conceding 60 runs. His bag of wickets had – Tom Graveney, Peter May, Denis Compton, Ken Barrington and Godfrey Evans

A big aggressive, Heine was not afraid to pitch it short. He once reputedly snarled at Trevor Bailey that “I want to hurt you” in one of his most sustained spells against England. He finished with 58 wickets in 14 tests. His best innings bowling effort was 6 for 58 against Australia at Johannesburg in 1957-58.

Storioes of aggression of Heine are many. Here is one for our visitors – After felling Peter Richardson, the England opener, in 1956-57 series, he allegedly said: “ Get up, I want to hit you again”

PS Heine breathed his last on 04.02.05 at the age of 76.
