ICC cricket committee recommends DRS shake-up

ICC cricket committee recommends DRS shake-up

An umpire’s call finding on a review may soon not cost teams a review. The ICC cricket committee, headed by India coach Anil Kumble, recommended on Thursday that teams do not lose reviews in those instances where an umpire’s call comes into play. And if the ICC chief executives’ committee approves it, the change could come into effect this October.

Currently, sides are allowed two unsuccessful reviews in the first 80 overs of a Test innings, and one per innings in ODIs. If a review is successful, they do not lose it.

LBW decisions, in particular, will be affected. The benefit of doubt in a DRS call goes to the on-field umpire’s original call. Therefore, if they give a batsman out leg-before and it is challenged, then the third umpire has to uphold the on-field judgment if projections show half the ball hitting a zone that stretches from the outside edge of the off stump to the outside edge of the leg stump. This is the margin of error afforded to the “umpire’s call”.

Now, after a two-day meeting, former international captains Kumble, Rahul Dravid, Mahela Jayawardene, current Australia coach Darren Lehmann, ECB director of cricket Andrew Strauss, umpire Richard Kettleborough among others are agreed that if an lbw review comes back with a verdict of umpire’s call, the team that called the review should not be penalised.

If this system is put in place, however, sides will not have their reviews topped up at 80 overs, as currently happens.

There were several other recommendations made by the group that met in London on May 23 and 24. If the ICC’s chief executives committee approves them, they could become laws starting October 1.

DRS in T20 Internationals

Currently there is no provision for the system, but several players, including most recently England’s Joe Root, have advocated for the move considering one decision can change the course of a match in the shortest format. Earlier this year, the Pakistan Super League used DRS for three matches, thought to be the first time DRS had been used in T20s at franchise or international level.

Concussion substitutes

The committee wanted the ICC’s member countries to run a two-year trial on the use of concussion substitutes. Australia had experimented with it in their last domestic season and had been lobbying the ICC to include it in international cricket as well. Tony Irish, the head of the Federation of Cricketers’ Association, has been vocal in this regard as well, saying “We see this as an important health and safety issue for players and believe that cricket is behind other sports in dealing with it.”

Red cards for players

The MCC in March had proposed the move to regulate behavior at the lower levels of cricket and the ICC cricket committee was in favour of bringing it to internationals as well. They wanted umpires to be empowered to force players off the field “in response to the most serious incidents of player misconduct, such as violence on the field.”

Monitoring no-balls

The third umpire should be deputised to call no-balls off the instant replays. The ICC cricket committee came to this conclusion after reviewing footage from a trial held in England during their ODI series against Pakistan last year.

Run-outs proposal

As it stands now, a batsman is dismissed if, after dragging his bat past the crease, it pops up at the point where the bails are broken. But the committee said once the bat is in and grounded, the batsman is safe, even if it bounces up later.

Finally, the committee was unanimous in wanting a Test championship, supported the push to include cricket in the Olympics and restricting the edges and the depth of bats to bring better balance in the game.

CH Gayle on his 10000 Twenty20 runs

CH Gayle on his 10000 Twenty20 runs

Here is what CH Gayle said after completing 10000 T20 runs – We are reproducing an article published  in espncricinfo.com with the permission of the portal

Chris Gayle’s first significant contribution in IPL 2017 – a 38-ball 77 – helped Royal Challengers Bangalore beat Gujarat Lions by 21 runs in Rajkot to lift themselves off the bottom of the table. Victory aside, the innings was special for Gayle, who became the first batsman to bring up 10,000 T20 runs.

Brought in as a replacement for the injured AB de Villiers, he put together a 122-run opening stand with Virat Kohli as Royal Challengers blasted 213 for 2, the highest total of the season. But much before unleashing mayhem, it was a single that brought him much relief.

“Samuel Badree reminded me before the game and said ‘Chris only three more runs to go, make sure you get it’ so it was actually playing on my mind a bit,” he said of the landmark. “Once I crossed the line, I said: ‘listen it’s time to have a go and then it eventually paid off, so I am really happy to get the runs.”

By the time Gayle walked off, he had blasted five fours and seven monstrous sixes. “People are still looking out for Chris Gayle. The universe boss is still here and still alive,” he said. “It was great fun. You know it’s good to be back. I wanted this so badly, but first of all to get 10,000 runs, it was actually on my mind, so I’m glad to get that sort of achievement. It’s a privilege to actually be the first person to get there. Hopefully I can continue entertaining the fans.”

Gayle had the lowest strike rate among openers who had played 50 balls this season before coming into the game. An aspect he corrected on Tuesday. The trigger was Ravindra Jadeja’s second over, in which he hit two fours and two sixes. The key to his effort was the manner in which he held his shape and didn’t slog wildly. “It’s not really premeditated, it just comes natural, to be honest,” he said. “Over the years, a lot of guys spoke to me about my stance. Even Shaun Pollock spoke to me about my stance. You’re never too old to learn.”

In his hour of glory, Gayle didn’t forget to thank everyone who helped him get there. “I just want to thank the fans and all the franchises where I have actually played around the world. Even playing for West Indies as well. At the end of the day, they have actually played a part in this 10,000 runs as well. So, I want to thank all the franchises. It has been fantastic and like I said still I have a lot more to offer to the fans. Hopefully, I can keep entertaining and get a few more thousand runs under my belt.”

Demonstration at KSCA Stadium as to how the next-generation subsurface aeration and vacuum-powered drainage system works. This water logged surface became dry in less than five minutes when the system was switched on

WELCOME THE NEXT-GENERATION CRICKET OUTFIELD AT CHINNASWAMY STADIUM, BANGALORE

“Match called off / delayed at Chinnaswamy Stadium due to wet outfield”. This headline which appeared quite often will soon be a thing of the past. Welcome to the next-generation cricket outfield! The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) has installed the next-generation subsurface aeration and vacuum-powered drainage system from SubAir, USA at Chinnaswamy Stadium (Bangalore) making it the first ever installation of such a technology for Cricket stadiums worldwide. KSCA Hon. Vice President Mr Sudhakar Rao said, “This is KSCA’s latest project in our constant endeavor to introduce cutting edge technologies in the interest of the game and the fans. Everyone understands that when it rains, it is an act of God…but once it stops raining, it will be inexcusable to delay or cancel a game due to a wet outfield. With this high-tech solution from SubAir, fastest resumption of the game is now possible.” The SubAir system automatically kicks into action the minute it starts raining, thereby not allowing any buildup of water on the outfield. It quickly removes standing water (36 times faster than drainage by gravity!) virtually eliminating the need for extended game delays or cancellations due to wet outfield conditions. So in reality, it could rain at 2AM on the day of the match, yet, without any manual intervention, the suction system gets activated through signals from the remote sensors embedded in the field. Water begins to get evacuated at the rate of over 10,000 Liters/minute, from the moment it begins to rain. As this can evacuate water faster than it can rain, the outfield is therefore ready for play within minutes of rain subsiding. This is a generational leap forward from when stadiums used to begin the water drainage or sopping operations after it has stopped raining. Mr. Sanjay Desai Vice president further added, “Fan experience is our primary objective. Additionally, there is a risk of Rs.80-100 Crores (US$12-15 Million) when a game gets washed out including losses to the paying public, the TV Broadcasters and advertisers, in-stadia advertisers etc. We believe we have addressed this challenge with the SubAir System”. Mr. Vinay Mruthyunjaya, Spokesperson, KSCA said, “This technology makes tremendous economic and financial sense for KSCA and many games will be saved in the future”. The SubAir Sport System also provides the curators at Chinnaswamy Stadium the ability to promote healthier, stronger, and safer turf. With its aeration function that operates round the clock, the SubAir System provides an optimal growing environment for the root zone, thereby minimizing turf diseases, algae, excessive thatch and black layer. The aeration function also helps in reducing the surface temperature on the turf, making it more comfortable for the players. Hyderabad-based Great Sports Infra, South Asia’s leading provider of turnkey solutions for sports infrastructure and also the exclusive licensee of SubAir for Cricket stadiums worldwide has designed, supplied and executed project. The scope included a massive renovation of the outfield along the lines of USGA standards. This meant excavating over 1,000 truckloads of soil, grading, compaction, laying geo-textile, trenching, laying perforated pipes ranging from 150mm to 800mm Diameter (totaling a network of over 4.5 Kms!), gravel layer and a layer of finely graded sand mixed with organic manure and nutrients, before the Bermuda grass was planted on the top. The resultant outfield possibly surpasses the best outfield anywhere in the cricketing world!

Displaying IMG-20170104-WA0025.jpg

This is how the water logged surface looked like after five minutes of the system was switched on. It was like a magic for the persons gathered at the demonstration.

The sub-surface network of perforated pipes is configured in a closed loop and connected to the SubAir Sport System, which is housed under the stands. The combination of this sub-base design and the SubAir system helps optimize the use of water needed for the turf, as well as capture the entire rainwater or any excess irrigation and redirect it completely for rain water harvesting. Anil Kumar, Managing Director of Great Sports Infra says, “We are glad to provide the SubAir aeration and water evacuation technology to KSCA, which will make it the most modern outfield in the cricketing world. Considering that millions of dollars are at risk when a match gets cancelled due to a wet outfield, KSCA has shown great vision in pioneering the use of this next generation technology. Many other cricket stadiums are now interested in adopting the same for their modernization plans.” Kevin Crowe, Senior Vice President at SubAir says, “SubAir has proven itself across various sports like Baseball, Soccer, Rugby, Golf etc. This system is used at some of the best stadiums worldwide including Wembley (UK), New York Mets, Seattle Mariners, BMO Field (Canada), Etihad Stadium (Manchester City) etc., and has over 500 installations. It has also been used for the NFL, 2014 FIFA World Cup (Brazil) and would also be in use in the upcoming FIFA World Cup in Russia (2018).” Currently there is no scientific measurement of actionable data related to salinity, temperature and moisture content. The SubAir system acquires data from all over the field through embedded wireless sensors and then takes appropriate corrective action keeping the field healthy and in optimal conditions, fostering stronger roots and turf.
