FDM Karunaratne now occupies the second place in the list of Sri Lankan openers who have scored most centuries. MS Atapattu leads the list with 16 centuries to his credit. FDM Karunaratne went past ST Jayasuriya who had scored 13 centuries, on his way to occupy the second place. MS Atapattu, FDM Karunaratne and ST Jayasuriya are the three Sri Lankan openers who have scored ten or more centuries.

FDM Karunaratne became the first Sri Lankan captain opener to score six  centuries. MS Atapattu {04}, ST Jayasuriya {04} and TM Dilshan {01} are the other Sri Lankan captain openers who have scored centuries.

FDM Karunaratne was playing his 75th test and made it memorable by scoring a century and also by reaching 5500 runs as an opening batsman. At the end of this test, his run aggregate read 5588.
