All the twenty wickets falling to catches in a first-class game – Former Karnataka Cricketer Najam Hussain – relives the first such occasion

Couple of days back, I had a surprise call from Najam Hussain, a former Ranji Trophy Cricketer and a good friend of mine since his playing days. His playing days coincided with the formative years of my cricketing career.  As an umpire in the local league matches, I was lucky to witness his magnificent all-round skills in all the three departments of the game. He remains the same genial cricketer as of yesteryears – a  true hallmark of a cricketer of his era.

The purpose of his call  which lasted about 25 to 30 minutes was to inform me a statistical record which has gone unnoticed by the Indian Cricket Statisticians which includes great names such as revered Anandji Dossa, Sudhir Vaidya, yours truly, K Gururaja Rao, B Ravindranath and C Keshavamurthy and a few others. He wanted me to publicize and populate this record. He was insistent that local dailies such as Deccan Herald, Prajavani shoud publish that. I assured him that  I would write an article on this statistics and publish them on my cricket portal www.hrgcricstats.com.

It was a feat of all the twenty wickets in a first class match falling to catches. It had happened during the Ranji Trophy match between Hyderabad and Mysore played at Gymkhana Grounds in 1965-66 in which the Hyderabad’s twenty wickets fell to catches pouched by Mysore fieldsmen.

Najam Hussain was of the opinion that it was the only occurrence in the first class cricket. But I had to visit the web portal of Association of Cricket Statisticians {ACS} to confirm his opinion. I found that it was one of the four occasions in the history of first class cricket. All the four occasions are detailed below. However, it was the first such occurrence in first class cricket.

4 10 Karnataka (1) v Mumbai Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai 2004/05
  10 Karnataka (2) v Mumbai Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai 2004/05

It was noted with interest that Ranji Trophy has witnessed another such instance which involves Mysore, now Karnataka. The game was between Mumbai and Karnataka at Mum-WS in 2004-04

The url of the score card culled from www.cricinfo.com is reproduced below. It is observed that Najam Hussain had made a huge contribution in this game by scoring a century in Mysore’s innings. Najam Hussain’s name is wrongly spelt as Najmal Hussain in the score card
